No matter what side of the business you may be on— producing, selling, distributing, even buying recordings— there is no longer a “standard operating procedure.” Hence the title of this Special Report, designed as a guide to the abundance of recording and distribution options that seem to be cropping up almost daily thanks to technology’s relentless march forward. Lewis Schmidt Initial interview date: February 5, 1988 Copyright 1998 ADST Q: Ed, I would like you to start out by giving us a background as to where you came from, what your experience was growing up in Vienna, and then primarily how you got out of Vienna at the time of the Nazi invasion. Finally your experiences after fleeing Vienna— how you got to America, and so forth. Why don't you pick it up from the beginning and start there. YOUTHFUL YEARS IN VIENNA SCHECHTER: Thank you, Lew. I was raised in Vienna, and left Vienna a few days after Hitler's Army marched into Austria. I had by that time finished my university studies and received the famous Austrian title of doctor, which is extremely useful in Central Europe, but I never use it in this country. I was active from my very early youth in Jewish movements. My university years coincided with the ever growing Nazi movement paralleling the Nazi takeover in Germany. So I was in Vienna, part of the Jewish community of Vienna: 200,000 people, 10% of the population of Vienna and I should have seen, at least it looks like it in retrospective—that the end of Interview with Edmund Schechter http://www.loc.gov/item/mfdipbib001024 Library of Congress Austria was inevitable. After all, part of Salzburg was only ten-minutes from the German border. -

Q: Max, what were the origins of your entry into the United States Government's Overseas Information Program* .AUS: The origins really were my military ser2ice during World War II with U.S. Army psychological warfare. I got to Europe -- after I had gotten my training in the states in Camp Sharpe which was a sub-camp of Camp .itchie, the Army Intelligence Center in psychological warfare -- by a rather remarkable Austrian-Hungarian refugee journalist, Hans Habe, who had been in the first psychological warfare unit formed in North Africa during the war. After he had participated in the in2asion of Sicily and Italy, Habe was sent back to the states to recruit and train four more psychological warfare units. -

The 83-year old former professor for history is one of the very few Ritchie Boys who live in Germany today. At War Against Their Home By Christian Bauer Marching through bullets On June 6, 1944 at 6:30 am Allied forces land in Normandy. Operation “Liberation“ For four months lasted Werner Angress‘ trai- ning at Camp Ritchie, Mary- land. Shartly before D-day he was assigned to an Airborne Division. He knew that he would have to jump behind the German lines. Jump into the unknown The night before D-Day, 23year old Werner Angress got on board of a C47 for his very fi rst parachute jump. The landing was soft. But Werner lost contact with his unit. On D-Day the secret mission of the “Ritchie Boys” began: German emigrants in US uniforms fought Country against Hitler’s Wehrmacht Swimming to the frontlines For months the soldiers had practised for this day: Photographer Robert Copa, pioneer of the embedded journalists,shot about 100 pictures of landing at Omaha Beach.
