  • Brake Pipe Corrosion Failures in Model Year (MY)
ENGINEERING ANALYSIS CLOSING REPORT SUBJECT: Brake pipe corrosion failures in model year (MY) 1999 through 2003 General Motors GMT800 series pickup trucks (Figure 1) and sport utility vehicles (Figure 2) in salt states. Figure 1. 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD. Figure 2. 2003 Chevrolet Suburban. EA No.: EA11-001 Date Opened: 5-Jan-2011 Date Closed: 9-Apr-2015 BASIS: On March 2, 2010, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration was petitioned by an owner of a MY 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD 4WD pickup truck to open a defect investigation into corrosion and failure of hydraulic brake pipes in Chevrolet pickup trucks. The letter references a complaint that had previously been submitted to the Office Defects Investigation (ODI) on January 21, 2010 (ODI No. 10301686). On March 29, 2010, ODI opened Defect Petition DP10-003 to evaluate the petitioner’s request for an investigation of brake pipe failures in MY 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD pickup trucks. The petition was granted on March 30, 2010, and Preliminary Evaluation PE10-010 was opened to investigate corrosion related brake pipe failure in MY 1999 through 2003 General Motors C/K pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles based on 110 complaints, including 3 alleged crashes. After PE10-010 was opened, the number of complaints received by ODI increased from less than 10 per month to 100 in April 2010 (Figures A1 and A2 in the Appendix). ODI’s analysis of consumer complaints and information provided by General Motors in response to the information request letter for PE10-010 showed that the field experience was concentrated in the region of the United States that NHTSA has viewed as salt states1 for investigations of corrosion related issues.

Automotive CO2 Emissions Characterization by U.S. Light-Duty Vehicle Platform Revised Manuscript for TRB, 15 November 2004 Feng An,1 John DeCicco,2* and Huiming Gong1 1Energy and Transportation Technologies, LLC 42977 Ashbury Drive Novi, MI 48375 248-347-9004 [email protected] [email protected] 2Environmental Defense 6327 Todds Lane Dexter, MI 48130 734-424-3742 [email protected] *corresponding author C:\Documents\Active\CarBur\Platforms\An, DeCicco, Gong -- TRB 05-1960 (15 Nov 2004).doc An, DeCicco, and Gong -- TRB 05-1960 2 ABSTRACT Raising the fuel economy of automobiles to lower carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions affects many aspects of vehicle design. Automakers organize their production using platforms, representing shared engineering across different models. A platform level of aggregation is therefore useful when examining the opportunities for and impacts of redesign. This paper explores the CO2 emissions-related characteristics of major platforms in the U.S. market, using data for model year 2002. The top 30 platforms were found to hold 69% of sales and emit 72% of the annualized CO2 contribution of the model year 2002 new light vehicle fleet. Variations of up to 35% in vehicle weight were observed for models within a given platform. The within-platform variation of CO2 emissions rate ranged up to 45% for all platforms among the top 30, except a platform including diesel engines, which had a 67% variation. Across major platforms, average CO2 emissions rates varied by a factor of 2.3 from lowest to highest. Powertrain efficiency, as indicated by ton-miles per gallon, varied by 40% across platforms, with both the lowest and highest values being seen in truck platforms.

  • The First Century of Gmc Truck History Compiled by Donald E
THE FIRST CENTURY OF GMC TRUCK HISTORY COMPILED BY DONALD E. MEYER INTRODUCTION GMC has been and is now one of the most successful of the pioneers in the manufacture and sales of commercial motor vehicles. The GMC brand is one of few of the original makes that have survived into the 21st century. The reputation of GMC truck quality, value, dependability and performance and the resulting user brand loyalty originated with the first roots of GMC products. It has been said that the roots of GMC Trucks go back to the 3 Rs of early truck development: Rapid, Reliance and Randolph. Truly, the first GMC trucks were Rapid or Reliance trucks with GMC nameplates. However, Randolph trucks apparently had little or no influence on GMC design. We start with the earliest root, the Rapid motor truck. CHAPTER 1: 1900 - 1919 1900 Max and Morris Grabowsky formed the Grabowsky Motor Vehicle Co. in Detroit. They started building a commercial truck prototype with a single cylinder horizontal engine, 2-speed planetary transmission and chain drive with a seat over the engine. Top speed was 10 mph and capacity was 1-ton. 1901 The Grabowsky brothers completed their first truck but while testing it found it to be under powered. They then began building a second truck powered by a 15 hp 2-cylinder horizontally opposed engine with a drivetrain similar to the protoype. 1902 Grabowsky brothers reorganized and formed Rapid Motor Vehicle Company. They sold that second truck to American Garment Cleaning Co. It probably was the first gasoline powered commercial vehicle on the streets of Detroit.

  • Why Trucks Jump: Offshoring and Product Characteristics
Why Trucks Jump: Offshoring and Product Characteristics∗ Phillip McCalmany Alan Spearotz University of Melbourne University of California - Santa Cruz May 2013 Abstract In this paper, we study the role of vertical product differentiation in the decision to allocate production between domestic and foreign plants. To do so, we examine the first wave of light-truck offshoring to Mexico that occurred due to substantially lower post-NAFTA trade barriers and a coincident increase in US demand for light trucks. In contrast to the typical assumption, but similar to many other industries, the need for additional capacity was accommodated by investment in both the US and Mexico for the same models of light trucks. Using a new dataset that details the extent of offshoring and domestic production within models, we document sharp differences in how capacity was utilized. Specifically, within models, we find that automakers offshored varieties which tend to be older in design vintage, lower scale, and less complex to produce. In contrast, we find that varieties \inshored" to newer capacity in the US exhibit the opposite characteristics. This highlights the important role of vertical differentiation and the associated variation in production complexity for the sorting of production across borders. A product with a large degree of vertical differentiation may provide scope for a firm to maximize profits by \inshoring" the more complex varieties while offshoring the less complex versions.
