Svensson, and Peter John Taylor Abstract Scientific investigations on the mammals of Angola started over 150 years ago, but information remains scarce and scattered, with only one recent published account. Here we provide a synthesis of the mammals of Angola based on a thorough survey of primary and grey literature, as well as recent unpublished records. We present a short history of mammal research, and provide brief information on each species known to occur in the country. Particular attention is given to endemic and near endemic species. We also provide a zoogeographic outline and information on the conservation of Angolan mammals. We found confirmed records for 291 native species, most of which from the orders Rodentia (85), Chiroptera (73), Carnivora (39), and Cetartiodactyla (33). There is a large number of endemic and near endemic species, most of which are rodents or bats. The large diversity of species is favoured by the wide P. LONGEVITY SURVEY LENGTH OF LIFE OF MAMMALS IN CAPTIVITY AT THE LONDON ZOO AND WHIPSNADE PARK The figures given in the following tables are based on the records of the Zoological Society of London for the years 1930 to 1960. The number of specimens in each sample is given in the first column. The percentage of the sample that died in less than a year at the zoo is iven in second column. In this way ‘delicate’ zoo species can be noted at a glance. An average fife span of all those individuals living for more than a year at the zoo is given (in months) in the third column. In the fourth column the maximum individual life-span is noted for each species. It must be emphasized that the age of specimens arriving at the zoo is seldom known accur- ately and no allowance has been made for this. All figures refer to the period of time between arrival at the zoo and death at the zoo. Actual life-spans will, therefore, usually be longer than those given. Abstract The forest ecosystem of Liberia is part from the Upper Guinea Eco-region, and harbors an exceptional biodiversity in a rich mosaic of habitats serving as refuge for numerous endemic species. Unfortunately, many of these forests have been lost rapidly over the past decades, and the remaining are under various forms of anthropogenic pressure, subsistence farming, and large-scale industrial agriculture and mining. As part of a broader survey to generate information for conservation management strategies in the Gross Concession Area in preparation for its oil palm and rubber plantations in western Liberia, Sime Darby (Liberia) Inc., commissioned surveys on large mammals species in 2011. Through a combination of hunter interviews and foot surveys, we documented evidence of 46 and 32, respectively, of large mammals in the area. Fourteen of the confirmed species are fully protected at national level and three are partially protected. At the international level, 15 species are of conservation concern, including Zebra and Jentink’s duiker, Diana monkey, Sooty mangabey, Olive colobus, Elephant and Leopard. -

The Tongwe people are the area’s original inhabitants, with rich traditional knowledge about wildlife. We collected Tongwe names of mammals and updated Jun’ichiro Itani’s list, which was compiled about 40 years ago. We also provided information on updated scientific names, equivalent Swahili names, and the current existence of these mammals in Mahale. We listed 66 Tongwe names of mammals, excluding synonyms. -

Evaluating dependence on wildlife products in rural Equatorial Guinea Sophie M. Allebone-Webb 2009 Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Imperial College London, University of London Institute of Zoology, Zoological Society of London Abstract Abstract It is often stated that wildlife is extremely important to poor rural households, particularly in tropical forest regions, and many have proposed that rural populations depend on wildife. There is evidence that the harvest of forest products such as bushmeat is highly unsustainable, and so there is a need to assess this dependence on forest resources in order to evaluate the potential impacts to people following a reduction in forest offtake whether due to declining wildlife populations or to management. There is clear evidence that the use of forest products, including bushmeat, wild fish and forest plants, is widespread, but the more ambiguous term ‘dependence’ is harder to demonstrate. I show that two rural villages in continental Equatorial Guinea consume, produce and earn significant amounts from wildlife resources, particularly bushmeat. I show that the consumption of wild foods, particularly plants, increases during the lean season, implying that wild plants reduce vulnerability to food shortages in times of stress, and are therefore important for food security. Production and income from wildlife is highest for poorer, food insecure households, and this represents a significantly higher proportion of their income than for the rest of the population, suggesting that these vulnerable households with few livelihood options rely on wildlife for regular income. The less accessible village is more food insecure and has fewer income sources, and is also more reliant on forest resources, particularly bushmeat for income. -

Trip report: Ghana, 2019 by Rauno Väisänen Since seeing the nature documentary on Picathartes, i.e. the yellow-headed rockfowl, by young David Attenborourough, I have been dreaming about a visit to West Africa. My colleague Mr Erkki Virolainen did a most succesful birding trip to Ghana in 2014 with an inspiring report (in Finnish). Ghana is also a well-known butterfly-watching destination with amazing species diversity. In addition to many Papilio and Charaxes species, there are wonderful West African Bebearia, Euriphene and Euphaedra butterflies. Finally, after reading Ian Thomson’s fantastic trip report with two pangolin species on the mammalwatching website, I decided to buy KLM flight tickets for me and my wife Anneli from Tallinn to Accra. We spent two weeks in Ghana on 16-29 March 2019. The programme was as follows: 16th March: late arrival at Accra and accommodatian at Tema; 17th March: morning at Shai Hills (abbreviated as SH) and afternoon in Kakum National Park (KA), accommodation at Jukwa; 18th-21st March: KA and surroundings, including the canopy walkway on 19 March, accommodation at Jukwa; 21st-23rd March: Bonkro Forest (BN), including the Picathartes nesting site and night walks, as well as bird and butterfly watching at Kwabena Sam Forest (KS) on 22nd and 23rd March, accommodation at Assin Foso; 24th March: 855 km drive from Assin Foso to Mole, with a long detour to Daboya just for the Egyptian plover, late arrivat at Mole Motel; 24-26th March: Mole National Park (MO) with night drives on 25th and 26th March; 27th March: drive from MO via the Monkey Sanctuary at Boebeng Fiema (BF) to Bobiri Butterfly Sanctuary (BB), accommodation at Bobiri Guesthouse; 28-29th March: morning at BB and departure from Accra. -

Central African Republic and Cameroon, February 4-12, 2017 VLADIMIR DINETS Access road to Sangha Lodge, CAR Central Africa is one of the few remaining parts of the world where flora and fauna are still poorly known, discoveries are possible at every step, and even a short trip should be undertaken as a serious scientific expedition. During a week-long visit to Sangha Lodge and vicinity in CAR and to SE Cameroon I saw 105 species of mammals (including 26 lifers), 264- 265 species of birds (including such goodies as nkulengu rail, white-crested heron, vermiculated fishing owl, all hornbills of the region, niam-niam parrot, green-breasted pitta, Sangha bush-robin, and Dja River scrub-warbler), ~25 species of herps (mostly frogs and lizards) and 5 species of fish. The best mammal of the trip was flightless anomalure, never before seen by a scientist; I photographed it and observed for about 20 minutes.
