The arrangement of the beaver’s masseter (jaw-closer) muscle once suggested a strong affinity to some sciurid rodents (e.g., squirrels), placing them in the Sciuromorpha suborder. Modern molecular data, however, suggested a closer relationship of beaver to the representatives of the mouse-related clade, but significant data from virtually homoplasy- free markers (for example retroposon insertions) for the exact position of the beaver have not been available. We derived a gross genome assembly from deposited genomic Illumina paired-end reads and extracted thousands of potential phylogenetically informative retroposon markers using the new bioinformatics coordinate extractor fastCOEX, enabling us to evaluate different hypotheses for the phylogenetic position of the beaver. Comparative results provided significant support for a clear relationship between beavers (Castoridae) and kangaroo rat-related species (Geomyoidea) (p < 0.0015, six markers, no conflicting data) within a significantly supported mouse-related clade (including Myodonta, Anomaluromorpha, and Castorimorpha) (p < 0.0015, six markers, no conflicting data). Most of an organism’s phylogenetic history is fossilized in their heritable genomic material. Using data from genome sequencing projects, particularly informative regions of this material can be extracted in sufficient num- bers to resolve the deepest history of speciation. -

We observed 150 glides. We were able to calculate glide ratios on 57 glides and airspeeds on 29 glides. Glide ratios (distance/faltitude lost]) averaged 1.87, and a glide ratio of 3•3.5 seems to represent an upper performance limit for P. leucogenys. Airspeeds (4.39•9.47 m/s) were substantially lower than reported in other studies, and glide angles were higher (17.74•34.99°). Aspect ratios of the animals in mid-glide averaged 1.42. After the first European Zoo Nutrition Conference in Rotterdam, in 1999, we are happy to present you the 9th European Zoo Nutrition Conference in Liberec, the Czech Republic. The European Nutrition Group (ENG) has proven to be an active group within EAZA. Certainly, it means that the animals in the European zoos will benefit from the improved diets as a result of presentations, posters, workshops and discussions held at the conferences and by the other activities organised by the ENG. One of the promoters of the ENG, Andrea Fidgett, resigned after chairing the group for more than 10 years, as she accepted a position in the USA. Ollie Szyszka, nutritionist in Marwell Zoo, will be the new chair and intends to stimulate and promote zoo animal nutrition within the ENG and European zoo community. The organising committee is pleased to present you a wide range of talks and posters, varying from sustainable palm oil, rhinoceros feeding, contraception by feeding, dietary drift, fertility in birds, milk composition, insects as feed for zoo animals to pest control in zoos. Prior to the conference, the EAZA Academy in cooperation with ENG, organises a workshop on January 26th titled: pellet formulation. After the success of the practical workstations during the last conference in Arnhem Zoo, we will have several workstation again during the zoo visit on Saturday, where information will be presented on specific zoo animal nutrition items during. -

The 2008 IUCN Red Listings of the World's Small Carnivores
The 2008 IUCN red listings of the world’s small carnivores Jan SCHIPPER¹*, Michael HOFFMANN¹, J. W. DUCKWORTH² and James CONROY³ Abstract The global conservation status of all the world’s mammals was assessed for the 2008 IUCN Red List. Of the 165 species of small carni- vores recognised during the process, two are Extinct (EX), one is Critically Endangered (CR), ten are Endangered (EN), 22 Vulnerable (VU), ten Near Threatened (NT), 15 Data Deficient (DD) and 105 Least Concern. Thus, 22% of the species for which a category was assigned other than DD were assessed as threatened (i.e. CR, EN or VU), as against 25% for mammals as a whole. Among otters, seven (58%) of the 12 species for which a category was assigned were identified as threatened. This reflects their attachment to rivers and other waterbodies, and heavy trade-driven hunting. The IUCN Red List species accounts are living documents to be updated annually, and further information to refine listings is welcome. The small mammal fauna of Sierra Leone is poorly documented, although bats and rodents account for the majority of mammalian diversity. Based on morphological, genetic and echolocation data, we recorded 30 bat (Chiroptera), three shrew (Soricomorpha) and eleven rodent (Rodentia) species at the Seli River in the north of the country in 2014 and 2016, during a baseline study for the Bumbuna Phase II hydroelectric project. In 2016, 15 bat species were additionally documented at the western fringe of the Loma Mountains, a recently established national park and biodiversity offset for the Bumbuna Phase I dam. Three bat species were recorded for the first time in Sierra Leone, raising the total number for the country to 61. -

Rodents are an important food source for villagers near the Lama forest reserve, located in the south of Benin between 6°55 - 7°00N and 2°04 - 2°12 E. This study was designed to look at the consumption of rodents as a food source combined with a survey of rodents sold in markets. Data was collected on : rodents species consumed, frequencies of consumption and food preferences. Some animals were captured in order to confirm the species. Rodents were a major part of diet included 10 species : grasscutter (Thryonomys swinderianus), giant rats (Criceto- mys gambianus), Gambian Sun-squirrel (Heliosciurus gambianus), crested porcupine (Hystrix cristata), ground squirrel (Xerus erythropus), grass rat (Arvicanthis niloticus), slender gerbil (Taterillus gracilis), Kempi’s gerbil (Tatera kempii), multimammate rats (Mastomys spp.) and grass mouse (Lemniscomys striatus venustus). On aver- age, young people and children consumed rodents 6 times per person per month. The preferences of local popula- tions were grasscutter and giant rats which were sold in local markets at relatively high prices US$8-10 and US$2-4 respectively. It is important to conduct further studies to look at the impact of this hunting on the rodent populations and to ensure sustainable harvesting. -

La biodiversité en Côte d’Ivoire : Etat des lieux et facteurs de menace 5 Biodiversity of Côte d’Ivoire: Current state and threats L’une des caractéristiques les plus fascinantes de la nature est la diversité des êtres vivants dont elle regorge. La biodiversité est définit simplement comme la diversité de toutes les formes du vivant, incluant la diversité génétique, spécifique et écosystémique. Elle constitue la toile de la vie terrestre et aquatique dont nous sommes partie intégrante et dont nous dépendons totalement pour notre bien être et notre survie. Elle atteint son maximum dans les régions tropicales dont les forêts abritent plus de 50 % de la diversité biologique mondiale. En Côte d’Ivoire, la conservation de la biodiversité est une question majeure au regard de son importance et des menaces fréquentes qui pèsent sur elle. En effet, de par la diversité et la particularité de sa flore et de sa faune, la Côte d’Ivoire fait partie des zones prioritaires de conservationhot ( spot de biodiversité) en Afrique de l’Ouest. Cependant cette diversité biologique est fortement menacée par de nombreux facteurs dont les plus importants sont la déforestation, l’agriculture non durable, le braconnage, la pollution et les changements climatiques. Ces menaces qui affectent considérablement aussi bien les écosystè- mes que les organismes vivants qu’ils abritent, ont un effet déterminant sur l’économie et la qualité de la vie humaine. Ce chapitre a pour objectif de faire un état des lieux de la biodiversité en Côte d’Ivoire et d’identifier les facteurs pouvant menacer sa conservation. Il comprend trois parties qui s’articulent autour des composantes essentielles de la biodiversité. -
