MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2017 BLACKMON WORKING TOWARD HISTORIC SEASON On Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Coors Field, Colorado Rockies All-Star outfi elder Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and his 24th home run of the season. With the round-tripper, Blackmon recorded his 57th extra-base hit on the season, which include 20 doubles, 13 triples and his aforementioned 24 home runs. Pacing the Majors in triples, Blackmon trails only his teammate, All-Star Nolan Arenado for the most extra-base hits (60) in the Majors. Blackmon is looking to become the fi rst Major League player to log at least 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in a single season since Curtis Granderson (38-23-23) and Jimmy Rollins (38-20-30) both accomplished the feat during the 2007 season. Since 1901, there have only been seven 20-20-20 players, including Granderson, Rollins, Hall of Famers George Brett (1979) and Willie Mays (1957), Jeff Heath (1941), Hall of Famer Jim Bottomley (1928) and Frank Schulte, who did so during his MVP-winning 1911 season. Charlie would become the fi rst Rockies player in franchise history to post such a season. If the season were to end today, Blackmon’s extra-base hit line (20-13-24) has only been replicated by 34 diff erent players in MLB history with Rollins’ 2007 season being the most recent. It is the fi rst stat line of its kind in Rockies franchise history. Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig is the only player in history to post such a line in four seasons (1927-28, 30-31).

THE ACADEMY MONITOR VOLUME 9, ISSUE 3 FROM THE COMMANDANT 3 R Greetings from the great Halls of Learning, D Starfleet Academy! From the Principal’s Office Q I’m not going to list all the awardees from the Academy as they have been sent to several venues, but we had lots. U I enjoyed my very first IC and hope to make it to another one sometime. It won’t be next year, unfortunately. A According to Tammy Willcox, our Scholarship director, she, Bran Stimpson and Linda Olsen have an email R exchange going on regarding some fliers/tri-folds to be used to promote the scholarship program both internally via membership packets and possible recruiting at T colleges and/or conventions and events where STARFLEET members are recruiting people. According to Linda Olson, $174.00 was collected for the Scholarship Fund through new or renewing memberships, bringing a E total donated thru Membership Processing to $403.00 for Promotions the next fiscal year. 2 R Outstanding Students There was a great deal of flak about the Pennies project 3 that R12 started last year prior to this year's IC. What are Cadet News 4 your thoughts on this being some type of official project and promoted through the STARFLEET website? No one Staff/Director/ I/C Awards 5-13 has actually approached her making it official, though Wayne Killough did bring the program up earlier in the Academy Grads 13-21 2 year, and it was brought up at the IC. He mentioned that it would be a good idea for chapters to have a special Academy Degree Program 22 penny jar/piggy bank to put the change in when folks go to 0 their meetings.

HISTORY & RECORDS BISONS HISTORY & RECORDS BUFFALO BISONS RETIRED NUMBERS OLLIE CARNEGIE #6 Carnegie was the most popular player and greatest off ensive performer in the history of professional baseball in Buff alo. He played 12 years with the Bisons (1931-1941, 1945) and is Buff alo’s all-time leader with 258 home runs (2nd in International League behind only Mike Hessman) and 1,044 RBI. Carnegie led the Bisons in home runs and RBI seven times (1932-1935, 1937-1939) and the IL twice (1938, 1939). His 45 home runs in 1938 remain a club record. A lifetime .308 hitter, Carnegie also owns the Bisons records for games (1,273), hits (1,362) and doubles (249) even though he didn’t join the team until he was 32 years old. Carnegie was in the inaugural class for both the International League (1947) and Buff alo Baseball Hall of Fame. LUKE EASTER #25 Luscious Easter was a slugging fi rst baseman whose long home runs and colorful style of play captured the hearts of Bisons fans from 1956 through 1959. Easter, who was the fi rst black player to play for Buff alo since 1888, hit over 35 homers and drove more than 100 runs for three consecutive seasons in Buff alo. He led the International League in home runs at RBI in both 1956 (35 homers, 106 RBI) and 1957 (40 home runs, 128 RBI). All told, Easter hit 114 home runs and drove in 353 runs with the Bisons. Of his many memorable games, Easter will always be remembered as the fi rst player ever to hit a home run over the scoreboard at Off ermann Stadium.

  • Deadwood – a Genre Analysis
Deadwood – a Genre Analysis ”You cocksucker!” – Al Swearengen 1 Abstract The following thesis takes into consideration the topic of genre, more specifically the western genre. My object of study is the HBO series Deadwood (2004-06) created By David Milch. The purpose of this thesis is to show how Deadwood relates to the western genre, and how it diverges from the traditional depiction of the western mythology. For the purpose of the analysis, my theoretical framework will consist of relevant theories within the theoretical field of genre. My theory is derived from the anthology comprised By Barry Keith Grant called Film Genre Reader IV. My theory section deals with the proBlems concerning the definition of genre, more specifically how we categorise genres. For this part my theory starts with a discussion of the problems arising from genre analysis. Hereon follows a discussion of relevant theories and methods within the framework of genre. I include in this section Edward Buscombe’s method on inner and outer form of genre; Rick Altman’s method on Semantic and Syntactic relations; Ideology which is derived from the workings of Rick Altman, RoBin Wood, and BarBara Klinger; a section concerning myth based on Barry Keith Grant’s notions of myth in genres; furthermore I discuss the issue of characters within genre, as it is a suBject important within the analysis of a TV series. My analysis consists of two parts. The first part is a historical overlook of the western genre, in which I take into consideration the various conventions, narratives, semantic traits, the mythic connections, and the ideological perspective of the genre.
