HISTORY & RECORDS BISONS HISTORY & RECORDS BUFFALO BISONS RETIRED NUMBERS OLLIE CARNEGIE #6 Carnegie was the most popular player and greatest off ensive performer in the history of professional baseball in Buff alo. He played 12 years with the Bisons (1931-1941, 1945) and is Buff alo’s all-time leader with 258 home runs (2nd in International League behind only Mike Hessman) and 1,044 RBI. Carnegie led the Bisons in home runs and RBI seven times (1932-1935, 1937-1939) and the IL twice (1938, 1939). His 45 home runs in 1938 remain a club record. A lifetime .308 hitter, Carnegie also owns the Bisons records for games (1,273), hits (1,362) and doubles (249) even though he didn’t join the team until he was 32 years old. Carnegie was in the inaugural class for both the International League (1947) and Buff alo Baseball Hall of Fame. LUKE EASTER #25 Luscious Easter was a slugging fi rst baseman whose long home runs and colorful style of play captured the hearts of Bisons fans from 1956 through 1959. Easter, who was the fi rst black player to play for Buff alo since 1888, hit over 35 homers and drove more than 100 runs for three consecutive seasons in Buff alo. He led the International League in home runs at RBI in both 1956 (35 homers, 106 RBI) and 1957 (40 home runs, 128 RBI). All told, Easter hit 114 home runs and drove in 353 runs with the Bisons. Of his many memorable games, Easter will always be remembered as the fi rst player ever to hit a home run over the scoreboard at Off ermann Stadium. Easter is also a member of the International League Hall of Fame and the Buff alo Baseball Hall of Fame. JEFF MANTO #30 One of the most well-known players of the Bisons modern era, Manto played for the Bisons during parts of four seasons (1997-2000). He is the Bisons modern era Home Run King with his 79 home runs. Manto joined the Bisons in June of 1997 and hit 20 homers and had 54 RBI in just 54 games. He was named American Association Batter-of-the-Week an unprecedented four times in six weeks. On July 12, 1997 against the Iowa Cubs, he became the fi rst player to hit three home runs in one game at Coca-Cola Field. Manto added 23 homers in 1998, helping propel the Bisons to a Governors’ Cup Championship. In the inaugural Triple-A World Series, Manto led all batters with a .533 batting average. He’s a member of the International League Hall of Fame and the Buff alo Baseball Hall of Fame. 88 BISONS HISTORY & RECORDS Th e Buff alo Baseball Hall of Fame represents such persons who have made a signifi cant contribution to Buff alo professional baseball, or such Western New Yorkers who have made a meaningful contribution to professional baseball generally. Th e Buff alo Baseball Hall of Fame was established in 1985 in conjunction with Buff alo Baseball’s 100th anniversary celebration. Each year the Hall of Fame Committee nominates names for suggested induction onto the preliminary ballot. Finalists are selected by a secret ballot, where a three-quarters vote of the committee is required for induction. Phil Ranallo, who died in 1986; Joe Alli, who died in 1996; Joe Overfi eld, who died in 2000, Vince McNamara, who died in 2000, Cy Kritzer, who died in 2004, Dan Carnevale, who died in 2005, Cy Williams, who died in 2006, and George Daddario, who died in 2007, were also members of the committee. Ralph Hubbell retired from the committee in 1998 prior to his death in 2000. 89 BISONS HISTORY & RECORDS BUFFALO BISONS IN COOPERSTOWN (21 MEMBERS) Th e Buff alo Bisons are well represented in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooper- stown, New York. Since 1937, a total of 21 former Bisons players, managers or coaches have been forever enshrined among baseball’s elite. In fact, in eight of the nine decades from the 1880s to the 1960s, Bisons fans have been able to watch a future member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Over the next 16 years, 51 individuals were honored with induction. Following 1963, the IL Hall of Fame would be dormant for more than four decades. Th en in 2007, in preparation for the League’s 125th anniversary season, the IL Hall of Fame was formally revived with the induction of two former League presidents. In 2008, a historic class of 27 individuals, including six former Buff alo Bisons players, were inducted into the International League Hall of Fame. Th e Bisons had four more inductions in 2009 and two in 2010 as the IL concluded a three-year revitalization plan for its Hall of Fame. In 2018, former Bisons slugger and minor league baseball home run king Mike Hess- man will become the 31st former Bison to be inducted into the IL Hall of Fame.
