CCB Project Design Document – July 4, 2011 Executive Summary Colombia is home to over 10% of the world’s plant and animal species despite covering just 0.7% of the planet’s surface, and has more registered species of birds and amphibians than any other country in the world. Along Colombia’s northwest border with Panama lies the Darién region, one of the most diverse ecosystems of the American tropics, a recognized biodiversity hotspot, and home to two UNESCO Natural World Heritage sites. The spectacular rainforests of the Darien shelter populations of endangered species such as the jaguar, spider monkey, wild dog, and peregrine falcon, as well as numerous rare species that exist nowhere else on the planet. The Darién is also home to a diverse group of Afro-Colombian, indigenous, and mestizo communities who depend on these natural resources. On August 1, 2005, the Council of Afro-Colombian Communities of the Tolo River Basin (COCOMASUR) was awarded collective land title to over 13,465 hectares of rainforest in the Serranía del Darién in the municipality of Acandí, Chocó in recognition of their traditional lifestyles and longstanding presence in the region. If they are to preserve the forests and their traditional way of life, these communities must overcome considerable challenges. During 2001- 2010 alone, over 10% of the natural forest cover of the surrounding region was converted to pasture for cattle ranching or cleared to support unsustainable agricultural practices. -

It supports countless thousands of species, as well as 30 million people. © Brent Stirton / Getty Images / WWF-UK © Brent Stirton / Getty Images The Amazon is the largest rainforest on Earth. It’s famed for its unrivalled biological diversity, with wildlife that includes jaguars, river dolphins, manatees, giant otters, capybaras, harpy eagles, anacondas and piranhas. The many unique habitats in this globally significant region conceal a wealth of hidden species, which scientists continue to discover at an incredible rate. Between 1999 and 2009, at least 1,200 new species of plants and vertebrates have been discovered in the Amazon biome (see page 6 for a map showing the extent of the region that this spans). The new species include 637 plants, 257 fish, 216 amphibians, 55 reptiles, 16 birds and 39 mammals. In addition, thousands of new invertebrate species have been uncovered. Owing to the sheer number of the latter, these are not covered in detail by this report. This report has tried to be comprehensive in its listing of new plants and vertebrates described from the Amazon biome in the last decade. But for the largest groups of life on Earth, such as invertebrates, such lists do not exist – so the number of new species presented here is no doubt an underestimate. Due to the morphological similarity in many of the groups, their taxonomy is controversial. Karyotype information proved to be an important tool for distinguishing some species because some of them are species-specific. Additionally, rodents can be an excellent model for chromosome evolution studies since many rearrangements have been described in this group.This work brings a review of cytogenetic data of Brazilian rodents, with information about diploid and fundamental numbers, polymorphisms, and geographical distribution. -

[email protected] Du fait de récents travaux ayant trait à la taxonomie et à la systématique des mammifères sud- américains, ainsi que de nouvelles découvertes de terrain, la « Liste des Mammifères de Guyane française » a évolué depuis les publications de Catzeflis (2010, 2015). La publication de Catzeflis (2015) mettait à jour les connaissances acquises jusqu’en octobre 2014, en apportant de brefs commentaires pour les espèces les moins connues, ou dont la taxonomie avait récemment changé. Depuis, de nouveaux changements (nomenclature, découverte de nouvelles espèces, synonymies, ..) sont intervenus, soulignant ainsi le dynamisme de la taxonomie et de la systématique et illustrant les efforts des naturalistes sur le terrain. Ainsi, ce document a pour ambition de mettre à jour (octobre 2015) la « Liste des Mammifères de Guyane française ». Les principaux changements par rapport à Catzeflis (2015) sont le rajout de deux chauves-souris (Molossops neglectus ; Promops nasutus) et de deux rongeurs (Oecomys sp-1 ; Oligoryzomys messorius), ainsi que l’indication comme quoi les tatous à neuf bandes de Guyane sont une espèce différente du taxon Dasypus novemcinctus. Un tableau récapitule la biodiversité des 197 espèces et 126 genres selon les différents ordres et familles retenus dans cette classification.
