Amazon Alive! A decade of discovery 1999-2009 The Amazon is the planet’s largest rainforest and river basin. It supports countless thousands of species, as well as 30 million people. © Brent Stirton / Getty Images / WWF-UK © Brent Stirton / Getty Images The Amazon is the largest rainforest on Earth. It’s famed for its unrivalled biological diversity, with wildlife that includes jaguars, river dolphins, manatees, giant otters, capybaras, harpy eagles, anacondas and piranhas. The many unique habitats in this globally significant region conceal a wealth of hidden species, which scientists continue to discover at an incredible rate. Between 1999 and 2009, at least 1,200 new species of plants and vertebrates have been discovered in the Amazon biome (see page 6 for a map showing the extent of the region that this spans). The new species include 637 plants, 257 fish, 216 amphibians, 55 reptiles, 16 birds and 39 mammals. In addition, thousands of new invertebrate species have been uncovered. Owing to the sheer number of the latter, these are not covered in detail by this report. This report has tried to be comprehensive in its listing of new plants and vertebrates described from the Amazon biome in the last decade. But for the largest groups of life on Earth, such as invertebrates, such lists do not exist – so the number of new species presented here is no doubt an underestimate. Due to the morphological similarity in many of the groups, their taxonomy is controversial. Karyotype information proved to be an important tool for distinguishing some species because some of them are species-specific. Additionally, rodents can be an excellent model for chromosome evolution studies since many rearrangements have been described in this group.This work brings a review of cytogenetic data of Brazilian rodents, with information about diploid and fundamental numbers, polymorphisms, and geographical distribution. -

Three nominal mite species were selected for study, all infesting the pelage of small mammals at different localities in Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo, Bahia, and the Federal District, Brazil. To analyse morphometric characteristics, thirty-seven morphological characters distributed across the whole body of each specimen were measured. We use the Analysis of Principal Components, extracting the three first axes and projecting each mite in these axes. Major species level changes in the taxonomy of the host mammals allows an independent examination of morphometric variation of mites infesting a set of distinctly different host species at different geographic localities. Gigantolaelaps vitzthumi and Laelaps differens are associated with oryzomyine rodents of the genus Cerradomys, and consistently showed a tendency to cluster by host phylogeny. -

[email protected] Du fait de récents travaux ayant trait à la taxonomie et à la systématique des mammifères sud- américains, ainsi que de nouvelles découvertes de terrain, la « Liste des Mammifères de Guyane française » a évolué depuis les publications de Catzeflis (2010, 2015). La publication de Catzeflis (2015) mettait à jour les connaissances acquises jusqu’en octobre 2014, en apportant de brefs commentaires pour les espèces les moins connues, ou dont la taxonomie avait récemment changé. Depuis, de nouveaux changements (nomenclature, découverte de nouvelles espèces, synonymies, ..) sont intervenus, soulignant ainsi le dynamisme de la taxonomie et de la systématique et illustrant les efforts des naturalistes sur le terrain. Ainsi, ce document a pour ambition de mettre à jour (octobre 2015) la « Liste des Mammifères de Guyane française ». Les principaux changements par rapport à Catzeflis (2015) sont le rajout de deux chauves-souris (Molossops neglectus ; Promops nasutus) et de deux rongeurs (Oecomys sp-1 ; Oligoryzomys messorius), ainsi que l’indication comme quoi les tatous à neuf bandes de Guyane sont une espèce différente du taxon Dasypus novemcinctus. Un tableau récapitule la biodiversité des 197 espèces et 126 genres selon les différents ordres et familles retenus dans cette classification. Esta diversidad incluye a 40 didelfi- 3 Centro de Estudios y Promoción del Desarrollo, DESCO, Málaga morfos, 2 paucituberculados, 1 sirenio, 6 cingulados, 7 pilosos, 39 primates, 162 roedores, 1 lagomorfo, 2 Grenet 678, Umacollo, Arequipa. soricomorfos, 165 quirópteros, 34 carnívoros, 2 perisodáctilos y 47 cetartiodáctilos. Los roedores y murciélagos (327 especies) representan casi las dos terceras partes de la diversidad (64%). Cinco géneros y 65 especies (12,8%) son endémicos para Perú, siendo la mayoría de ellos roedores (45 especies, 69,2%). La mayoría de especies endémicas se encuentra restringida a las Yungas de la vertiente oriental de los Andes (39 especies, 60%) seguida de lejos por la Selva Baja (14 especies, 21,5%). -

Parasites & Vectors (2018) 11:502 https://doi.org/10.1186/s13071-018-3067-2 REVIEW Open Access Trypanosoma cruzi transmission in the wild and its most important reservoir hosts in Brazil Ana Maria Jansen*, Samanta Cristina das Chagas Xavier and André Luiz Rodrigues Roque Abstract Trypanosoma cruzi (Kinetoplastea: Trypanosomatidae) infects all tissues of its hosts, which along with humans, include hundreds of mammalian species in the Americas. The epidemiology of T. cruzi has been changing in that currently the majority of the cases and/or outbreaks of Chagas disease occur by the ingestion of comestibles contaminated by T. cruzi metacyclic forms. These cases/outbreaks occur in distinct regional scenarios, mainly in the Amazon biome and are related to the local interaction mode of humans with their surroundings, as well as with the overall local ecological peculiarities. As trypanosomiasis caused by T. cruzi is primarily a zoonosis, understanding the variables that influences its transmission in the wild as well as the role played by the extant fauna in the maintenance of the parasite, is critical in establishing control measures. Here, we present the results of our studies of T. cruzi infection of free ranging wild mammalian fauna in the five biomes of Brazil, a country of continental dimensions. From 1992 up to 2017, we examined a total of 6587 free-ranging non-volant wild mammal specimens. Our studies found that 17% of mammals were seropositive and 8% of all animals displayed positive hemocultures indicative of high parasitemia and, consequently, of infectivity potential.
