Carter Information Research Specialist Knowledge Services Group Congressional Research Service ˜ The Library of Congress Iraq: Summary of U.S. Forces Summary This report provides a summary estimate of military forces that have reportedly been deployed to and subsequently withdrawn from the U.S. Central Command (USCENTCOM) Area of Responsibility (AOR), popularly called the Persian Gulf region, to support Operation Iraqi Freedom. For background information on the AOR, see [http://www.centcom.mil/aboutus/aor.htm]. Geographically, the USCENTCOM AOR stretches from the Horn of Africa to Central Asia. The information about military units that have been deployed and withdrawn is based on both official government public statements and estimates identified in selected news accounts. The statistics have been assembled from both Department of Defense (DOD) sources and open-source press reports. However, due to concerns about operational security, DOD is not routinely reporting the composition, size, or destination of units and military forces being deployed to the Persian Gulf. Consequently, not all has been officially confirmed. For further reading, see CRS Report RL31701, Iraq: U.S. Military Operations. This report will be updated as the situation continues to develop. Persian Gulf Campaign for DCS: F-14A the Persian Gulf Map Presents a Wonderful Opportunity to Merge Existing Or Pending Asse
Persian Gulf Campaign for DCS: F-14A The Persian Gulf map presents a wonderful opportunity to merge existing or pending assets within DCS to create a compelling Naval warfare campaign centered on the F-14A. This campaign aspires to recreate and build upon true events of 1987-88 during which the US Navy fought an undeclared war against Iran. While the player will view these scenarios through the lens of a Naval aviator, operations in the Gulf of Oman and Strait of Hormuz involved a wide range of USN units and capabilities. Combat missions associated with Operation Earnest Will during 1987 and 1988 offers an excellent opportunity for creating realistic DCS campaign scenarios for the DCS: F-14A and the DCS: Strait of Hormuz map. It combines a real operation (largest USN operation since WWII) with an available DCS map and a DCS module placed into the correct era for the operation. Iran is also an interesting opponent for the US Navy during the late 1980s. On one hand, the Iranian Air Force and Navy have an intimate, if slightly outdated, understanding of American equipment and tactics. Nearly every piece of military hardware that they possess was American made and the majority of their senior military staff were either trained in the US or by American personnel. However, my 1987-88 their military was generally quite depleted. The precise number of operational aircraft is unclear, but evidence suggests that only 20-35% of their aircraft were operational with an unclear supply of remaining missiles and ammunition. Iran did manage to obtain parts and missiles as part of the Iran-Contra scandal, but demand still managed to outstrip supply (most likely). -

Brennan, U.S. Navy Retired2 Thirty years ago there was a New Jersey connection to the long-lasting Iran-Iraq War. That eight years of conflict was one of the longest international two-state wars of the 20th century, beginning in September 1980 and effectively concluding in a truce in August 1988. The primary and bloody land war between Iran and Iraq began during the Iranian Hostage Crisis. The Shah had left Iran and that year the USSR invaded Afghanistan. The conflict expanded to sea and involved many neutral nations whose shipping came under attack by the combatants. The parties’ intent was to damage their opponents’ oil exports and revenues and decrease world supplies. Some suggested that Iran and Iraq wanted to draw other states into the conflict. An Iranian source explained the origin of the conflict at sea. The tanker war seemed likely to precipitate a major international incident for two reasons. First, some 70 percent of Japanese, 50 percent of West European, and 7 percent of American oil imports came from the Persian Gulf in the early 1980s. Second, the assault on tankers involved neutral shipping as well as ships of the belligerent states.3 The relatively obscure first phase began in 1981, and the well-publicized second phase began in 1984. New Jersey, half a world away from the Persian (Arabian) gulf, became involved when the United States agreed to escort Kuwait tankers in an effort to support a friendly nation and keep the international waters open. -

It is a distinct pleasure to dine with you this evening, to mark what will, in just a few days, be the 209th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar. There is reason for us being here tonight; a great and significant purpose. Some might think it because the Royal Australian Navy has four serving Vice Admirals for the first time in its history but, however impressive, that is not why we’re here. Some might think it because we can have an enjoyable evening together but, while I am sure we will, that is not why we’re here. Some might think it so I can quiz you on which of the RAN’s serving Vice Admirals is the same height as Lord Nelson – no pressure to get the right answer – but that is not why we are here. Ladies and Gentlemen, the reason we are here tonight is because we are different; different by virtue of our membership of the naval profession of arms. While we are rightly part of a joint force, the Australian Defence Force, and while you attend a tri‐service academy, you are still different from your army and air force peers. The value you will bring to the joint fight is your expertise, your skill, your mastery of warfare at sea – on, over, under and from the sea. Whether you are aircrew, supply, engineer, warfare officer, doctor, dentist or submariner, you are first and foremost a naval officer – it is a unique profession in its benefits and challenges – it is anything but ordinary and it is immensely important to Australia. -

As we begin 2017, I am optimistic that we will build on the many successes of 2016, and that we are well-positioned as a community to meet the challenges and leverage the opportunities ahead of us. One of the ways in which we are so well-posi- tioned is the strength of our team, and it is my pleasure to introduce our new Command Master Chief, Thaddeus T. Wright, who joined NAVSUP on November 2, 2016. This edition of the Supply Corps Newsletter features articles from the Supply Corps Senior Leadership Symposium held in Leesburg, Virginia, in November 2016. Flag Officers, Senior Executive Service members, Captains, and Captain-selects met to review the current state of our community, explore key initiatives, and prepare for 2017 and beyond. On the one hand, President Macron has been reaching out to include Britain in the future of European defense through his proposal on a European crisis force. Nine EU nations will on Monday (25 June) formalise a plan to create a European military intervention force, a French minister said, with Britain backing the measure as a way to maintain strong defence ties with the bloc after Brexit. The force, known as the European Intervention Initiative and championed by French President Emmanuel Macron, is intended to be able to deploy rapidly to deal with crises.
