The professional and supportive environment facilitates Master's studies and encourages academic pursuits. The Chinese program has a well-rounded curriculum and a group of well-established scholars with versatile specialties to offer a solid fundamental training in Sinology. Although my research project was on Chinese linguistics, I personally enjoyed courses on modern Chinese literature, classical Chinese literature, and ancient Chinese philosophy to deepen my appreciation of the literary body of Chinese on a full-spectrum. The classes I took with Professor Elena Suet-Ying Chiu, Professor David K. Schneider, and Professor Enhua Zhang were full of valuable insights of the Chinese culture and civilization. I also gained a good understanding of second-language acquisition and Chinese grammars thank to Professor Zhijun Wang. On my master thesis project probing into the development of the Chinese language, I cannot have enough good words to express my respect to Professor Zhongwei Shen for his bottomless knowledge and tremendous patience in guiding me all the way through the finish line. As the Graduate Director who responded to all graduate students' needs and questions diligently, Professor Shen still made the effort and managed to advise me on this project closely and energetically on top of his own research writing contract and the class teaching obligation. With their warm-hearted encouragements and brilliant suggestions, Professor Shen and my other two committee members, Professor David K. Schneider and Professor Amanda C. Seaman, constituted the best work triangle of committee that I could ever ask for. Their support functioned as the cornerstone for me to carry on, especially, during the time when I was preparing for the defense while my father just passed away. The Chinese program at UMass Amherst will always be the home to my journey of Sinology. My experience here will keep nourishing and inspiring me on the road of academic exploration for the rest of my life. The visualization and further analysis confirm the reconceptualization of Chinese linguistic history with the theory of Horizontal Transmission (Shen 2016). Horizontal Transmission situates the development of Mandarin and other Chinese dialects in a sociopolitical landscape as a cultural complex and introduces imperfect learning to the time-capsulated process of Language Shift as an inevitable social phenomenon. The nature of language largely determines how it can change(Janda and Joseph 2003). We have to ruminate on the fact that the grammar of language is a symbolic system of representation while living language is a complex adaptive system generated and regenerated by individuals (Shen 2015). v The descriptive capacity of Shen’s theory is compatible with the nature of language being dynamic idiolects alongside a real linguistic history embodied by individual speakers in time and space. In English, for example, a noun tends to follow a determiner (a/an/the), while a verb precedes the morphological inflection [ing]. The presence of these markers may assist children in identifying a word’s form class and thus glean some information about its meaning. This study examined whether Mandarin, a language that has a relatively impoverished morphosyntactic system, offers reliable morphosyntactic cues to the noun–verb distinction in child-directed speech (CDS). Using the CHILDES Beijing corpora, Study 1 found that Mandarin CDS has reliable morphosyntactic markers to the noun–verb distinction. Feng-fan Hsieh National Tsing Hua University Many Sinitic languages respect low vowel raising (LVR) whereby the low vowel /a/ is raised to /e/ only when flanked by a palatal glide and a coronal coda. In this article, I show that LVR in Sinitic languages is a genuine process of grammar because low-level phonetic coarticulatory effects alone cannot account for cross- linguistic/dialectal variation. Specifically, my survey reveals that vowel duration, onset consonants and/or the presence of retroflexes may have a direct bearing on LVR, thus calling for a phonological analysis. I argue that the phenomenon in question is better treated as additive effects of (i) target undershoot in the wake of impoverished vowel duration (i.e. vowel reduction) and (ii) contextual influences (i.e. backness assimilation). Phonological vowel quality change (LVR here) is motivated only when the benefit of contextual neutralization exceeds that of the sum of the “cost” of implementing the above coarticulatory patterns. Analytically, Flemming’s (2003) feature co-occurrence constraints, together with phonetically driven constraints, provide a straightforward account of the relationship between coronal place and vowel backness attested in LVR. Fu National University of Singapore Research in first language development draws disproportionately from nontone languages. Such research is often presumed to reveal developmental universals in spite of the fact that most languages are tone lan- guages. Recent research in the acquisition of tone languages points to a distinct course of development as compared to nontone languages. Our purpose is to provide an integrated review of research on lexical tone acquisition. First, the linguistic properties and origins of tone languages are described. Following this, research on the acquisition of tones in perception and production is reviewed and integrated. Possible reasons for the uniqueness of tone in language acquisition are discussed. Finally, theoretical advances promised by further research on tone acquisition and specific research directions are proposed. Professor of Chinese Linguistics at Cornell University from 1962-1979. Nicholas C. Bodman received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. from Yale University. He entered the Navy during World War II, and was transferred to Pearl Harbor in 1942, where he was part of the group that deciphered the Japanese naval code. From 1950 to 1961, he worked as a scientific linguist with the Foreign Service Institute of the U.S. State Department. He came to Cornell in 1962 as an expert in the historic reconstruction of Chinese and related languages. He won Guggenheim and National Science Foundation fellowships in 1961 and 1962, which took him to India, Nepal, and Burma to study Tibeto­ Burman languages. After his retirement from Cornell he visited the People's Republic of China twice at the invitation of the Institute of Linguistics of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. He lectured at major universities and research institutes and conducted linguistic fieldwork on the Min dialect in both Fujian and Guangdon provinces. He was the author of four books and numerous articles and reviews. Professor Bodman died in 1997.     HISTORICAL LINGUISTICS NICHOLAS CLEAVELAND BODMAN I. INTRODUCTION The literature on Chinese historical linguistics is already very large, and indeed unti very recently at least, the history of the language and its writing system has been the major focus of attention for scholars writing on the Chinese language. These writings are now becoming more and more voluminous, and many of them deserve more than ever before to be characterized as having real linguistic value, in the modern sense of the term, whereas the earlier writings in this field pertain more to a traditional philological or sinological approach.1 The native Chinese tradition of phonological studies had, in particular, reached a high degree of sophistication during the Ch'ing dynasty. This discipline2 has in fact made a generally happy marriage with modern Western linguistics. In surveying the major developments from the time of the Second World War to the present, I shall attempt to cover the most important current trends in the fields of historical phonology, morphology and syntax in writings dealing with the history of the Chinese language only,3 excepting where I touch upon comparative linguistic studies which would relate Chinese to other linguistic groups. The many works of a purely philological or text-critical nature and those having to do with semantic problems are not dealt with here. Important and numerous as they are, historical studies of lexical items are not treated here unless they are significant in a broader way or deal with matters having some phonological, morphological, or syntactic import.
