    Aquila - The FGCU Student Research Journal The Roots and Development of Jewish Feminism in the United States, 1972-Present: A Path Toward Uncertain Equality Jessica Evers Division of Social & Behavioral Sciences, College of Arts & Sciences Faculty mentor: Scott Rohrer, Ph.D., Division of Social & Behavioral Sciences, College of Arts & Sciences ABSTRACT This research project involves discovering the pathway to equality for Jewish women, specifically in Reform Judaism. The goal is to show that the ordination of the first woman rabbi in the United States initiated Jewish feminism, and while this raised awareness, full-equality for Jewish women currently remains unachieved. This has been done by examining such events at the ordination process of Sally Priesand, reviewing the scholarship of Jewish women throughout the waves of Jewish feminism, and examining the perspectives of current Reform rabbis (one woman and one man). Upon the examination of these events and perspectives, it becomes clear that the full-equality of women is a continual struggle within all branches of American Judaism. This research highlights the importance of bringing to light an issue in the religion of Judaism that remains unnoticed, either purposefully or unintentionally by many, inside and outside of the religion.     GLOBAL JUSTICE FELLOWSHIP 2017–2018 FELLOWS AND STAFF BIOS The AJWS Global Justice Fellowship is a selective program designed to inspire, educate and train key opinion leaders in the American Jewish community to become advocates in support of U.S. policies that will help improve the lives of people in the developing world. AJWS has launched the latest Global Justice Fellowship program, which will include leading rabbis from across the United States. The fellowship period is from October (2017) to April (2018) and includes travel to an AJWS country in Mesoamerica, during which participants will learn from grassroots activists working to overcome poverty and injustice. The travel experience will be preceded by innovative trainings that will prepare rabbis to galvanize their communities and networks to advance AJWS’s work. In 2013 Rabba Hurwitz was awarded the Hadassah Foundation Bernice S. Tannenbaum prize, and the Myrtle Wreath Award from the Southern New Jersey Region of Hadassah in 2014. In 2016 she was the Trailblazer Award Recipient at UJA Federation of New York. She was named as one of Jewish Week’s 36 Under 36, the Forward’s 50 most influential Jewish leaders, and Newsweek’s 50 most influential rabbis. In 2017 Rabba Hurwitz was chosen to be a member of the inaugural class of Wexner Foundation Field Fellows. She and her husband, Josh Abraham, are parents to Yonah, Zacharya, Davidi and Natan. About Maharat Maharat is the first institution to train and ordain Orthodox women to be clergy, and was founded in 2009 after the ordination of Rabba Sara Hurwitz by Rabbi Avi Weiss and Rabbi Daniel Sperber. Now in its 10th year, Maharat has graduated 26 women who are serving in clergy roles in synagogues, schools, hospitals, universities, and Jewish communal institutions. There are 31 more students in the pipeline, preparing to change the landscape of Orthodox Judaism and the community at large.

    These words (with slight editing) were delivered by Rav Avi on Shabbat afternoon March 6th to an audience of approximately 250 of the Bayit's members and friends. Following his remarks, a Q & A session brought many voices from the community into the conversation. We welcome your questions and feedback as well. I'd like to acknowledge the presence of Rabba Sara Hurwitz. Throughout this whole ordeal, she has carried herself with grace and humility and wanted little more than to continue her work as a spiritual leader in the Bayit. Sara supports this open discussion and has been involved in shaping the direction of this process at every step of the way. The change of title from Maharat to Rabba has precipitated controversy in our community which was unintended and unexpected. The fallout has powerfully affected Sara. It has also affected our Bayit. I am to blame as I failed to process the change before it happened, and did not properly explicate its meaning. What I’d like to do this Shabbat is outline in general terms some of the issues which are at play as a starting point to engage in meaningful conversation on the matter. It is most important to know what Rabba means. Functionally, Rabba is no different from Maharat. Maharat Sara Hurwitz’s role did not change one iota when she became Rabba Sara Hurwitz. Let me explain: Our Orthodox model for women in general and women in leadership differs dramatically from the Conservative and Reform model. In Conservative and Reform Judaism a woman’s role is identical to a man’s role.
