About Young Chicago Authors

Through creative writing, Young Chicago Authors helps young people from all backgrounds to understand the importance of their own stories and those of others, so that they can pursue the path they choose and work to make their communities more just and equitable. . YCA provides opportunities and mentorship to teens who are interested in creative writing. Over the past two decades, YCA has worked with thousands of young artists in school and after-school settings, guiding them as they develop their voices. From weekend writing intensives to the largest teen poetry slam in the country, Louder Than a Bomb, YCA lets students take part in a vibrant literary community that transcends cultural and socio-economic boundaries.

Check The Method Check the Method is a master class in poetry and hip hop spoken word, surveying Out-of-School and/or contemporary poets representing many styles. On Saturdays from 1:00 pm to 3:00 Summer pm during the academic year, students convene to read, discuss, write, share, and revise under the mentorship of YCA’s artistic director and associate artistic director.

Chicago Beat Chicago Beat is a journalism inquiry grounded in non-ction creative writing and Field Trip, Out-of- verse journalism. Student interns meet twice a week to engage in research, School and/or eldwork, and writing that sheds light on an issue relevant to young people in the Summer city.

Education Throughout the school year, YCA teaching artists work in select Chicago-area Professional Partnerships schools through a focused Education Partnerships program. YCA's teaching artists Development, collaborate with classroom teachers to provide creative writing instruction during Resources, Field Trip, the school day and lead meetings of the after-school poetry clubs. Teams selected Out-of-School and/or from each school's poetry club compete at Louder Than a Bomb. Summer, Performance / Workshop, Residency

Emcee Wreckshop Emcee Wreckshop targets students who are interested in honing their emcee skills Out-of-School and/or in the rap tradition. Wreckshop participants meet from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Summer Saturdays during the academic year to thoughtfully engage in writing bars.

Louder Than A Bomb LTAB is the largest teen poetry slam in the country. Each winter, teams Professional Chicago Youth Poetry representing more than 120 schools and community groups from all over the Development, Field Festival (LTAB) Chicago area face o in bouts in which they perform original group and individual Trip, Out-of-School poems. In 2015, 73 CPS schools participated in Louder Than A Bomb. The team and/or Summer, nals on the last night of the competition drew an audience of 3,200. Other

Queeriosity Queeriosity is a monthly poetry salon that creates a safe space for LBGTQ and Out-of-School and/or questioning youth, aged 12-25, to explore the world through a queer lens. Summer

School And Throughout the school year, YCA Teaching Artists are invited to conduct one-time or Resources, Other, Community short-term workshops, perform at school assemblies and functions, and organize Performance / Resources poetry slams in dozens of schools in Chicago and its surrounding area. Typically, Workshop, Residency YCA receives compensation for these types of engagements.

Summer Writing Write To The City Summer Camp is YCA’s weeklong exploration of contemporary Field Trip, Out-of- Institute -- Write To creative writing and its intersection with other art forms. Held at the University of School and/or The City at Chicago campus with eld trips planned throughout, Write To The City Summer brings students into workshops led by renown artists, expanding young people’s understanding of the arts while fostering their own development as writers. This program is fee-based with scholarships available to qualifying students.

WordPlay WordPlay is YCA’s long-running three-hour Tuesday evening salon, which begins at Field Trip, Out-of- 6:00 pm with a master class in poetry led by a member of YCA’s seven-person School and/or Teaching Artist Corps. At 7:00 pm, students sign up to take the stage in a youth Summer open mic that represents the spectrum of experiences of young Chicagoans from all parts of the city. The evening concludes with a performance by a featured guest artist. WordPlay runs weekly throughout the year.
