This year, as in each year since the Arts Education Plan was released, the progress report identifies some important gains. Foremost among these is that a higher percentage of CPS schools than ever before, serving a higher share of CPS students than ever before, are meeting the criteria to be rated as Strong or Excelling in the arts. This achievement is particularly encouraging considering the financial challenges the district has faced in recent years. Despite a frequently uncertain and challenging financial climate, and with additional arts gains clearly needed, data reflect that both the district and principals have continued to prioritize arts education in their schools.

We thank staff at the Chicago Public Schools and the Chicago Police Department for providing us with invaluable support and assistance. 2 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Levels of gun violence in Chicago remain unacceptably high, destroying lives and devastating communities—particularly the most economically disadvantaged and socially marginalized. Gun violence robs Chicago’s youth of their childhood and their potential, it drives out the businesses and families that help neighborhoods thrive, and it threatens the very future of the city itself. While our city is not alone in confronting this crisis, Chicago’s challenge is uniquely tragic in its concentration among our city’s most vulnerable residents—school-aged youth. Compared to other cities, a significantly larger share of Chicago’s victims and suspects of gun violence are adolescents. We founded the University of Chicago Crime Lab in response to this devastating problem of gun violence among school-aged youth. The Chicago Tribune had launched a series about the tragic incidents of gun violence among school-aged youth; soon after, a University of Chicago student was fatally shot just off-campus.

    CHICAGO ARCHITECTURE BIENNIAL, BP AND CHICAGO ARCHITECTURE FOUNDATION ANNOUNCE WINNERS OF THE BP STUDENT DESIGN COMPETITION MAYOR RAHM EMANUEL HONORS WINNERS AND PARTICIPANTS AT SHOWCASE RECEPTION HELD AT THE CHICAGO CULTURAL CENTER CHICAGO (December 13, 2017) – The Chicago Architecture Biennial, Founding Sponsor BP and Signature Education Partner Chicago Architecture Foundation (CAF), announced yesterday the winners of the BP Student Design Competition at a showcase reception hosted at the Chicago Cultural Center, the Biennial host site. Following on the success of the program during the inaugural 2015 BP Student Design Competition, the 2017 edition allowed aspiring artists and architects in Chicago’s elementary and high schools the opportunity to create projects that challenged their creative thinking and skills around the Biennial’s theme, “Make New History.” More than 1,000 students from 60 Chicago Public Schools were involved in the citywide competition. The winners of this year’s BP Student Design Competition are: Level 1: Graphic Design Division First Prize Winner, Roberto Duarte from Benito Juarez Community Academy, 11th Grade, Second Prize Winner, Lisbeth Droz from Kelvyn Park High School, 11th Grade, Third Prize Winner, Manuel Diaz from John F.
