PERRET Patrick & Rachele MARTINI: Pseudogynoxys benthamii Cabrera (Compositae-Senecioneae), a legitimate name During editing of the treatment of the tribe Senecioneae for the “Flora del Paraguay”, pro - blems with the application of two names, Pseudogynoxys benthamii Cabrera and Pseudogynoxys cabrerae H. Rob. & Cuatrec., arose. In recent literature (ROBINSON & CUATRECASAS, 1977; HIND, 1992, 1993; IHARLEGUI, 1999), Pseudogynoxys cabrerae is the commonly accepted name for Paraguayan (and South American) plants, except in treatments for Argentina written by A. Cabrera (cf. CABRERA & al., 1999). This note provides arguments to retain the name Pseu - dogynoxys benthamii , published by A. Cabrera; a lectotype is choosen. Pseudogynoxys cumingii (Benth.) H. Rob. & Cuatrec. ( ≡ Gynoxys cumingii Benth.) is a taxon from Central America and northern South America (ROBINSON & CUATRECASAS, 1977). In 1879, GRISEBACH provided a new name in Senecio for the taxon published by Bentham to avoid a homonymy with Senecio cumingii Hook. & Arn. In the same time, he cited two speci - mens, one from Argentina, Oran Province, collected by Lorentz and the other one from Paraguay, Balansa 902 . BAKER (1884) used the same name but excluded the taxon described by Bentham from the northern part of the continent. This point appears to have been misunderstood by ROBINSON & CUATRECASAS (1977). The precise statement by Baker is: “ Senecio Benthami Griseb. Symb. Argent. 206, excl. syn. Benthami”. These processes are provided for in Art. 48.1 of the ICBN (GREUTER & al., 2000). In short, BAKER (1884) published the new name Senecio benthamii Baker, later homonym of Senecio benthamii Griseb. -

Nevertheless, recent studies by Pelser et al. (2007, 2010) have shown that based on phylogenetic analyses of nrITS and plastid DNA sequence data, species of the genus Lasiocephalus are deeply embedded in Senecio Linnaeus (1753: 866), and, consequently, should be transferred into this latter genus. In fact, a number of species of Lasiocephalus were originally described as Senecio or had been, at some point, transferred into Senecio so only few transfers are necessary. Lasiocephalus sodiroi (Hieronymus 1900: 63) Cuatrecasas (1990: 313) is based on the name Culcitium sodiroi Hieron., described by Hieronymus (1900: 63−64) from “[Ecuador,] summis pascuis montium Imbabura et Chimborazo”, based on unnumbered specimens collected by Sodiro. The type specimen was originally deposited in B, where it was destroyed in 1943 [see photo no. 18150 at F (F0BN018150); Field Museum 2012] and a lectotype was subsequently selected by Cuatrecasas (1990), see below. -
Ignurbia, a New Genus of the Asteraceae-Senecioneae from Hispaniola

Its only species, I. constanzae, first described by Ignatz Urban under Senecio, is illustrated. The new genus is characterized by its herbaceous, suffruticose habit, dissected leaves with a herbaceous texture, orange or dirty yellow discoid capitula and styles with continuous stigmatic areas lacking distinct sweeping-hairs. Possibly related genera are Odontocline (Jamaica), Jessea (Costa Rica, Panama) and Talamancalia (Costa Rica, Panama, Ecuador, Peru). Introduction During my ongoing revision of the Asteraceae tribe Senecioneae of the Greater Antilles the need for a new generic taxonomy has become obvious. In the most recent flora by Liogier (1996) the Senecioneae are represented in Hispaniola by Senecio (16 spp.), Erechtites (2 spp.), Emilia (3 spp.), Pseudogynoxys (1 sp.) and the endemic genera Herodotia (3 spp.) and Mattfeldia (1 sp.). Liogier (1996) also included Liabum and Neurolaena in the Senecioneae, but these genera be- long to the tribes Liabeae and Heliantheae, respectively. Not noted by Liogier (1996), Borhidi & al. (1992) added to the flora of Hispaniola the new genus Ekmaniopappus, comprising two of the species formerly treated in Herodotia, and the genus Pentacalia, by combining two Senecio spp. -

Abstract: Costa Rica’s most populated area, the Central Valley, has lost much of its natural habitat, and the little that remains has been altered to varying degrees. Yet few studies have been conducted to assess the need for conservation in this area. We present preliminary inventories of plants, butterflies, and day-flying moths of the Reserva Ecológica Leonelo Oviedo (RELO), a small Premontane Moist Forest preserve within the University of Costa Rica campus, located in the urbanized part of the Valley. Butterflies are one of the best bio-indicators of a habitat’s health, because they are highly sensitive to environmental changes and are tightly linked to the local flora. A description of the RELO’s physical features and its history is also presented with illustrations. Approximately 432 species of ca. 334 genera in 113 families of plants were identified. However, only 57 % of them represent species native to the Premontane Moist Forest of the region; the rest are either exotic or species introduced mostly from lowland. More than 200 species of butterflies in six families, including Hesperiidae, have been recorded. -
