Regular Meeting Minutes - May 17, 2018 Page 1 of 235 e Township Public Schools REGULAR MEETING MINUTES MAY 17, 2018 The Regular Meeting of the Wayne Township Board of Education was held on Thursday, May 17, 2018 in Council Chambers of the Municipal Building at 475 Valley Road, Wayne, New Jersey 07470. Executive Session was held in the Large Conference Room, in the Administration Building, 50 Nellis Drive, Wayne, New Jersey 07470. The meeting was scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m., pursuant to the terms of the Sunshine Law. The meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m. by Donald Pavlak, Jr. , Board President. I. Reading of Sunshine law statement Adequate notice of this Regular and Executive Meeting, setting forth time, date and location, has been provided in accordance with the requirements of the Open Public Meetings Act on January 9, 2018 by: Prominently posting a copy on the bulletin board in the lobby of the offices of the Board of Education, which is a public place reserved for such announcements, transmitting a copy of this notice to The Record, The Wayne Today, and the Municipal Clerk. II. Roll Call PRESENT: Eileen Albanese, Michael Bubba, Sean Duffy, Cathy Kazan, Gail Okun, Donald Pavlak, Jr., Suzanne Pudup, and Stacey Scher. ABSENT: Mitch Badiner ALSO PRESENT: Dr. Mark Toback, Superintendent, Donna Reichman, Assistant Superintendent, Jinnee DeMarco, Assistant School Business Administrator/Board Secretary and John Geppert, Board General Counsel. Approval to Convene into Executive Session x- 2018 - 1 RECOMMENDED ACTION: Approved WHEREAS, the Wayne Township Board of Education (hereinafter referred to as the "Board") from time to time must convene into Executive Session to discuss confidential matters including but not limited to personnel issues, legal matters, student issues and labor negotiations. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, the Board shall move into Executive Session to discuss personnel, legal, and student matters; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the minutes of the executive session will provide as much information as possible without violating any applicable privilege or confidentiality so that the public can understand what was discussed and when available what the Board decision was; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the minutes of the executive session will be· released to the public in an appropriately redacted form within a reasonable period of time; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the redacted portion of the executive session minutes will not be released until such time as the privilege or confidentiality is no longer applicable. Reconvene The Executive Session of the Wayne Board of Education Regular Meeting of May 17, 2018 was convened in the Conference Room of the Wayne Bgard of Education, 50 Nellis Drive, Wayne, NJ 07470. The Statement of Compliance setting forth time, date and location was read in accordance with the requirements of the Open Public Meetings Act and the roll call was taken. The meeting was recessed and is now being reconvened. The Board reconvened at 7:37 p.m. in the Wayne Township Municipal Building Council Chambers, 475 Valley Road, Wayne, New Jersey 07470. Mr. Donald Pavlak, Jr., Board President, advised that the Board had been meeting in Executive Session at 50 Nellis Drive for the purpose of discussing personnel, legal matters, and student matters. Information regarding these matters will be made public, if and when, appropriate. We sent an email to the superintendent there offering any services and assistance if there is a need; we will help out. I know in each of our schools there will be discussion on how to support Paramus. WAYNE TOWNSHIP PUBLIC SCHOOLS CHOSEN TO RECEIVE THE 2018 AARON FLANZBAUM 21ST CENTURY DEMOCRATIC HERITAGE AWARD The New Jersey Association of School Administrators (NJASA), in partnership with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), chose the Wayne Township Public Schools to receive the 2018 Aaron Flanzbaum 21 st Century Democratic Heritage Award. The Award will be presented on Friday, May 18th, at the upcoming NJASA Spring Leadership Conference in Atlantic City. The Aaron Flanzbaum 21st Century Democratic Heritage Award recognizes school districts in New Jersey that have demonstrated a commitment to building inciusive school communities with anti-bias learning environments free of discrimination, where all students and staff can flourish. The district won the award based on our new district-wide initiative, No Place for Hate. For more information and to view a video, look for the announcement on the homepage of our website. SPECIAL EDUCATION WEEK The Wayne Township Public Schools will be recognizing the many achievements of our students with disabilities and the commitment of their parents, teachers and other professionals to the educational success of these children. Special Education Week falls under the umbrella of Abilities Awareness Month. Throughout the month of May, in support of our district's inclusive philosophy, all schools will be holding events highlighting the commonalities and differences among students and the strengths and talents all children possess. WAYNE HILLS PATRIOT ZONE - OPEN FOR BUSINESS It is with great excitement that we announce the grand opening of Patriot Zone, a school-based store located at Wayne Hills High School, which is a purveyor of various items made by students as well as standard office supplies, who are enrolled in the Transition Skills Program.. The May 4th opening was a very exciting event. We thank the community who came out to celebrate this special day. WAYNE DAY Regular Meeting Minutes - May 17, 2018 Page 5 of 235 SAVE THE DATE: The annual Wayne Day event is being held on Sunday, June 10, 2018 from 11 :00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. rain or shine. This year marks the 26th anniversary of Wayne Day and will prove to be a spectacular day for all who attend. The district has a display they are planning, and we are excited to show the community all the exciting things happening in the Wayne public schools. B. HIB REPORT During this reporting period, there were a total of 5 incidents reported as HIB. Mer thorough investigation 1 of those incidents was found to be actual cases of HIB. C.
