Heart Wood® Cellars Photo By: Tim Fuller DRINKING IN THE VERDE VALLEY How the hills and deserts of central Arizona gave birth to some of the boldest wines in America. FEBRUARY 7, 2018 When Californians Valerie and Daniel Wood purchased a second home in Arizona’s Verde River Valley in the early aughts, they were surprised by the quality of the wines they found. Many of them were comparable to the ones they drank back home; they also compared favorably with the Grenaches, Syrahs, and Cabernets they’d enjoyed in the southern wine-growing regions of Italy, France, and Spain. “But what intrigued us the most was the idea of wine grapes growing in the desert,” Valerie says. “So, we spent some time talking to people about them.” They learned that the Verde Valley has many similarities, both in elevation and climate, to more celebrated wine regions, including—yes—the south of France, Italy, and Spain. “Those growing regions are around 30 to 50 degrees latitude,” Valerie says. “Here, it’s 34 degrees. As for the extreme heat of the Grand Canyon State, it’s not as big a problem as it seems. “The elevation affords us a cooling off period during the evening,” she says. “It gives grapes time to rest and prepare for the next day of sun and heat.” She also says the terroir, which ranges sporadically from limestone rich soil to desert sand, also produces bold wines with fascinating, and at times unique, profiles. When they bought the house in Arizona, the Woods were working high-power corporate jobs at McDonald’s.

  • Provisioner Bona Fide Pure Arizona, Arizona White Table Wine 2014, 57
Provisioner Bona Fide Pure Arizona, Arizona White Table Wine 2014, 57% Colombard, 30% Chenin Blanc, 13% Malvasia 13.3% Alc • The Provisioner White is fresh, crisp and fruity with perfect amount of body. It’s wonderful as an accompaniment to a light lunch, with serious dinner foods and, of course, all by itself. • In early frontier days the small-town general store was the social hub and lifeline for the hardy pioneers that settled the American Southwest. These stores, or provisioners, sold everything from nails to flour, blankets to whiskey. Arizona, despite efforts to tame her, is still a wild place with many secrets lying just below the surface. The most recent discovery is the propensity for the vine to thrive here and to yield a fine nectar that is indisputably Southwestern. Provisioner wines capture and share the soul of this place, and they do so in the spirit of the old-time general store: they support new exploration, they push us into new territory and make this quest we are on a little more honest and enjoyable. And all of this without breaking the bank. Drink well. These are wines for the people! • Fort Bowie Vineyard, Cochise County, Arizona • Fort Bowie Vineyards is the second oldest vineyard in the state. Planted in 1984, the massive French Colombard vines on the site are a big as a foot in trunk diameter. Additionally, the deep, loamy soils and warm summers (the warmest of our vineyards) lend to fruit driven wines that are approachable and young. • At an elevation of 3750 feet, Fort Bowie has two distinct vineyards, the Shop block and Lacey’s block.

  • Aenima (Metal)

  • NEW RELEASES MP3 CD, CD & LIBRARY DOWNLOAD COMPLETE and UNABRIDGED 1 Introducing Awais Khan…
APRIL – JUNE 2021 Australia ULVERSCROFT AUDIO NEW RELEASES MP3 CD, CD & LIBRARY DOWNLOAD COMPLETE AND UNABRIDGED 1 Introducing Awais Khan… Awais Khan currently lives in Pakistan. He has studied Novel Writing and Editing at the prestigious Faber Academy in London and is the founder of the Writing Institute, the largest institute for Creative Writing in Pakistan. In the Company of Strangers is his debut novel. What inspired the story behind In the Company of Strangers? In the Company of Strangers explores the secrets and lies of Pakistan’s wealthy society as they become a target in a terror plot. Over the years, I have had the chance to observe the lives of the people here and I’ve come to realise that no matter how privileged they may be, they are still subject to the toxic issues plaguing all of Pakistan, namely domestic abuse, misogyny and shaming. There are no heroes in In the Company of Strangers. My intention was to shine a light on how flawed and vicious much of Pakistani society can be, and how much still needs to be done to improve the lives of people, especially women, here. Introduce us to Mona. What’s facing her at the start of the novel? Mona is in her early forties and is married to one of the richest men in Lahore. Despite having wealth and all the luxuries that come with it at her disposal, she is unhappy. She is trapped in an abusive marriage with Bilal and she finds her friends extremely fake and judgmental…When a former friend tries to reconnect with her, offering her a chance to venture into a glittering world of secrets and covert affairs, she doesn’t think twice.

  • Hipster Black Metal?
Hipster Black Metal? Deafheaven’s Sunbather and the Evolution of an (Un) popular Genre Paola Ferrero A couple of months ago a guy walks into a bar in Brooklyn and strikes up a conversation with the bartenders about heavy metal. The guy happens to mention that Deafheaven, an up-and-coming American black metal (BM) band, is going to perform at Saint Vitus, the local metal concert venue, in a couple of weeks. The bartenders immediately become confrontational, denying Deafheaven the BM ‘label of authenticity’: the band, according to them, plays ‘hipster metal’ and their singer, George Clarke, clearly sports a hipster hairstyle. Good thing they probably did not know who they were talking to: the ‘guy’ in our story is, in fact, Jonah Bayer, a contributor to Noisey, the music magazine of Vice, considered to be one of the bastions of hipster online culture. The product of that conversation, a piece entitled ‘Why are black metal fans such elitist assholes?’ was almost certainly intended as a humorous nod to the ongoing debate, generated mainly by music webzines and their readers, over Deafheaven’s inclusion in the BM canon. The article features a promo picture of the band, two young, clean- shaven guys, wearing indistinct clothing, with short haircuts and mild, neutral facial expressions, their faces made to look like they were ironically wearing black and white make up, the typical ‘corpse-paint’ of traditional, early BM. It certainly did not help that Bayer also included a picture of Inquisition, a historical BM band from Colombia formed in the early 1990s, and ridiculed their corpse-paint and black cloaks attire with the following caption: ‘Here’s what you’re defending, black metal purists.
