Brochure De La Saison 2021-2022

Dazzling French Soprano SANDRINE PIAU Makes Toronto Debut Jan 31 – Feb 3 Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra Directed by Jeanne Lamon Sandrine Piau, Soprano
Dazzling French Soprano SANDRINE PIAU makes Toronto Debut Jan 31 – Feb 3 Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra Directed by Jeanne Lamon Sandrine Piau, soprano “Only a voice this pure, with intonation so flawless, could seem to linger long after it had sounded.” —San Francisco Classical Voice "Sandrine Piau is one of today’s most celebrated singers in the world of early music." —Music Web International “A magnificent singer with … pure timbre, even line, flawless musicality, and touching fragility.” —Classiqueinfo Toronto, Canada, January 11, 2013 … One of the most remarkable stars of the French opera scene, soprano Sandrine Piau joins Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra for her highly anticipated Toronto debut from January 31 to February 3, 2013. Piau is also renowned worldwide for her performances and recordings of baroque music, by Handel and Vivaldi in particular. She makes her Tafelmusik debut in a programme of virtuoso operatic arias and motets by these two composers, singing excerpts from Handel’s Giulio Cesare and Il trionfo del tempo, and Vivaldi’s thrilling and technically demanding In furore iustissimae irae. Known for her “clear and deeply expressive voice, nuanced phrasing and immaculate control,” (The New York Times) Piau regularly performs with celebrated conductors such as William Christie, Philippe Herreweghe, Christophe Rousset, Gustav Leonhardt, Ivor Bolton, Ton Koopman, René Jacobs, Marc Minkowski and Nikolaus Harnoncourt. Highlights of Piau’s current season include a debut recital tour to Japan, her Boston Symphony Orchestra debut, performances with RAI Orchestra in Turin, Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande at La Monnaie, Brussels, and a Mozart recital and performance of Britten’s Les Illuminations at Wigmore Hall in London. -
NEWSLETTER of the American Handel Society
NEWSLETTER of The American Handel Society Volume XVIII, Number 1 April 2003 A PILGRIMAGE TO IOWA As I sat in the United Airways terminal of O’Hare International Airport, waiting for the recently bankrupt carrier to locate and then install an electric starter for the no. 2 engine, my mind kept returning to David Lodge’s description of the modern academic conference. In Small World (required airport reading for any twenty-first century academic), Lodge writes: “The modern conference resembles the pilgrimage of medieval Christendom in that it allows the participants to indulge themselves in all the pleasures and diversions of travel while appearing to be austerely bent on self-improvement.” He continues by listing the “penitential exercises” which normally accompany the enterprise, though, oddly enough, he omits airport delays. To be sure, the companionship in the terminal (which included nearly a dozen conferees) was anything but penitential, still, I could not help wondering if the delay was prophecy or merely a glitch. The Maryland Handel Festival was a tough act to follow and I, and perhaps others, were apprehensive about whether Handel in Iowa would live up to the high standards set by its august predecessor. In one way the comparison is inappropriate. By the time I started attending the Maryland conference (in the early ‘90’s), it was a first-rate operation, a Cadillac among festivals. Comparing a one-year event with a two-decade institution is unfair, though I am sure in the minds of many it was inevitable. Fortunately, I feel that the experience in Iowa compared very favorably with what many of us had grown accustomed Frontispiece from William Coxe, Anecdotes fo George Frederick Handel and John Christopher Smith to in Maryland. -
MUSICWEB INTERNATIONAL Recordings of the Year 2019
MUSICWEB INTERNATIONAL Recordings Of The Year 2019 This is the seventeenth year that MusicWeb International has asked its reviewing team to nominate their recordings of the year. Reviewers are not restricted to discs they had reviewed, but the choices must have been reviewed on MWI in the last 12 months (December 2018-November 2019). The 128 selections have come from 27 members of the team and 65 different labels, the choices reflecting as usual, the great diversity of music and sources; I say that every year, but still the spread of choices surprises and pleases me. Of the selections, one has received three nominations: An English Coronation on Signum Classics and ten have received two nominations: Gounod’s Faust on Bru Zane Matthias Goerne’s Schumann Lieder on Harmonia Mundi Prokofiev’s Romeo & Juliet choreographed by John Cranko on C Major Marx’s Herbstymphonie on CPO Weinberg symphonies on DG Shostakovich piano works on Hyperion Late Beethoven sonatas on Hyperion Korngold orchestral works on Chandos Coates orchestral works on Chandos Music connected to Leonardo da Vinci on Alpha Hyperion was this year’s leading label with nine nominations, just ahead of C Major with eight. MUSICWEB INTERNATIONAL RECORDING OF THE YEAR In this twelve month period, we published more than 2300 reviews. There is no easy or entirely satisfactory way of choosing one above all others as our Recording of the Year, but this year one recording in particular put itself forward as the obvious candidate. An English Coronation 1902-1953 Simon Russell Beale, Rowan Pierce, Matthew Martin, Gabrieli Consort; Gabrieli Roar; Gabrieli Players; Chetham’s Symphonic Brass Ensemble/Paul McCreesh rec. -

Les Talens Lyriques the Ensemble Les Talens Lyriques, Which Takes Its
Les Talens Lyriques The ensemble Les Talens Lyriques, which takes its name from the subtitle of Jean-Philippe Rameau’s opera Les Fêtes d’Hébé (1739), was formed in 1991 by the harpsichordist and conductor Christophe Rousset. Championing a broad vocal and instrumental repertoire, ranging from early Baroque to the beginnings of Romanticism, the musicians of Les Talens Lyriques aim to throw light on the great masterpieces of musical history, while providing perspective by presenting rarer or little known works that are important as missing links in the European musical heritage. This musicological and editorial work, which contributes to its renown, is a priority for the ensemble. Les Talens Lyriques perform to date works by Monteverdi (L'Incoronazione di Poppea, Il Ritorno d’Ulisse in patria, L’Orfeo), Cavalli (La Didone, La Calisto), Landi (La Morte d'Orfeo), Handel (Scipione, Riccardo Primo, Rinaldo, Admeto, Giulio Cesare, Serse, Arianna in Creta, Tamerlano, Ariodante, Semele, Alcina), Lully (Persée, Roland, Bellérophon, Phaéton, Amadis, Armide, Alceste), Desmarest (Vénus et Adonis), Mondonville (Les Fêtes de Paphos), Cimarosa (Il Mercato di Malmantile, Il Matrimonio segreto), Traetta (Antigona, Ippolito ed Aricia), Jommelli (Armida abbandonata), Martin y Soler (La Capricciosa corretta, Il Tutore burlato), Mozart (Mitridate, Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Così fan tutte, Die Zauberflöte), Salieri (La Grotta di Trofonio, Les Danaïdes, Les Horaces, Tarare), Rameau (Zoroastre, Castor et Pollux, Les Indes galantes, Platée, Pygmalion), Gluck -
2016 – 2017 Season Marks Les Talens Lyriques' 25Th Anniversary
2016 – 2017 season marks Les Talens Lyriques’ 25th anniversary Operas by Purcell, Cavalli, Charpentier, Salieri, Mozart, Handel & Monteverdi Culminating in his debut at London’s Royal Opera House for Mozart’s Mitridate in June next year, Christophe Rousset embarks on a rich season of opera with Les Talens Lyriques - from Purcell, Cavalli, Handel, Monteverdi and Mozart to forgotten masterpieces by Charpentier, Salieri and Pergolesi, to mark their 25th anniversary. From Israel to Italy, Spain to Lithuania, Rousset’s infectious enthusiasm for the baroque is in high demand. With Les Talens Lyriques at the Theater an der Wien, Rousset presents the modern premiere of Salieri’s Les Horaces in concert in October (also Versailles) and a new production of Purcell’s Fairy Queen by Mariame Clément in January. Further new productions include Pergolesi’s San Guglielmo d’Aquitania by Francesco Nappa in Iesi, Italy, Mozart’s Magic Flute in Dijon in a direction by David Lescot and Cavalli’s Calisto in Strasburg directed by Mariame Clement, following their success in Rameau’s Platée and Castor & Pollux six years ago. The revival of Pierre Audi’s Monteverdi Madrigals in Amsterdam continues to Brighton Festival as part of Les Talens Lyriques’ multiple visits to the UK this season. The season opens with an Italian tour to Pergolesi’s birthplace in Jesi for a new production of his oratorio San Guglielmo, Duca d’Aquitania, a quasi-opera replete with comic monk to be staged by Francesco Nappa on 9 and 11 September. Rousset also conducts Pergolesi’s masterpiece Stabat Mater coupled with Leo’s Salve Regina on 10 September at the Pergolesi Spontini Festival in Jesi. -
