At the start of 2019, Ben was asked to take on the role of Head Coach for the Modified Rugby Program, a touch-only Rugby program designed for children with learning and perceptual difficulties. Being the first Club outside of Queensland to host the program, Ben took on the role with some uncertainty of what the program would look like and how he would fully engage with the children. Despite this, there were no roadblocks for Ben from start to finish - he did an outstanding job with the children, quickly building close relationships with each participant and their parents. Ben also recruited several players from the Club to assist in the delivery of the program. Praise for Ben’s ability with the children came quickly, and he was duly recognised at ACT Rugby’s MacDougall Medal night by receiving the Anderson Trophy for Sportsmanship. Ben was also recognised by the Club for his efforts, receiving the Player Clubman of the Year award at Vikings Rugby’s presentation night. Away from rugby, it is rumoured that Ben can cook a fantastic quiche.

ben miller Lanyon United Football Club

With over 20 years’ service to the Lanyon United Football Club, Ben has contributed in a multitude of roles in the club. He has coached many grades from 2003-present, currently Player/Coach of the Men’s Masters 35’s. Ben was a board member from 2003-2015, puts his hand up for refereeing duties (nearly every week) and is the first to run the bbq or help out at any event the club is running. Without people like Ben, the club would not be around today. In 2009, Ben played 50 games across the season, covering all grades. A standard season is 16-20.

mary russel Joyelle Calisthenics

Mary has been part of the Joyelle community for seven years and has cemented herself as a valuable member of the club. As the twin sister of Joyelle’s Head Coach and the mother of two young girls it was an easy choice for Mary to become involved in Calisthenics. Mary began volunteering with the Club by fulfilling competition duties and assisting with fundraising events. For the past four years Mary has been part of the Joyelle Committee performing the role of Club Secretary. Mary is highly organised and performs this role effortlessly. She actively encourages other parents to volunteer and welcomes new committee members and families and values fresh ideas and ways of thinking. This positive attitude has resulted in many new faces joining our committee over the last four years. Mary played a vital role in re-establishing Joyelle’s annual training camp in 2018 after a four year hiatus. Mary, along with the Head Coach, worked tirelessly to organise the camp booking, coordinate all teams, communicate to parents and committee and organise food and volunteers. The camp was a huge success with nothing but praise and positive feedback received from club members. Mary has since coordinated the annual camp over the last few years. Mary can be quoted saying “my daughters love calisthenics; therefore, I also love calisthenics.” It is with this passion that Mary fulfills her role as the Club Secretary. vikings 24/7 fitness award nominations troy evans Tuggeranong Vikings Hockey Club

Troy took up the role as Club President and hit the ground running. He was not only a consistent contributor by providing ongoing direction for Vikings and excellent continuity in the position. He coached the U18 & U11 juniors, an U9 Hookin2hockey team, a mentoring role, umpired various junior games, continued to play and assisted with the Second-Grade men’s team, giving up much of his personal free time. Whilst making himself known to club members he took time to watch teams play throughout the season, and during the finals series he endeavoured to be at every game no matter what grade or age group to wish them well, which was specifically noted and commented on by players and coaches. He worked with the committee members learning their duties, and assisted where possible. Troy was the recipient of the hockey club’s 2019 Club Person of the Year award.

kristen asher Tuggeranong Vikings Triathalon Club

Kristen has been a member of the Vikings Triathlon Committee for a number of years. Being a member of the Committee is a volunteer role and there is an expectation that you will give up some of your time as part of that role. However, Kristen’s volunteering goes above and beyond the normal levels expected of a committee member. Since joining the Committee, Kristen has been our equipment officer – keeping stock of equipment, maintaining and replacing; meet hub organiser – set up and pack down of ‘Vikings Central’ athlete zone at events; novice program co-ordinator - an 8 week program aimed to lead people to their first triathlon; Fundraising specialist and social event Queen. vikings 24/7 fitness award nominations vince townsend Lake Tuggeranong Rowing Club

As Club Boat Captain for several years, Vince Townsend is very hands-on with the Rowing Club. He had a big role in the recent Boatshed upgrade which involved relocating the current fleet and equipment to various temporary premises. Vince arranged the loaning and delivery of boats to other clubs’ sheds and drove boats to various locations so club competitors could continue their training with minimal disruption. Vince spent many hours planning the new course on Lake Tuggeranong for the Tuggeranong Cup Regatta. All throughout the renovations, Vince regularly met with the building and government representatives to ensure progress was being made. After the upgrade, Vince set up working bees to relocate all the equipment back to base, ensuring a well laid out storage area for safe manoeuvrability of boats.

brian duval Calwell Little Athletics Club

Brian no longer has children competing at Calwell Little Athletics; however, he has continued in the role of Head Coach, helping athletes learn correct technique and fine tune those little things that aren’t quite there yet. Brian’s passion for the sport shines bright at each meet and training session. He gives 100% in everything he does. Brian runs coaching clinics to further develop up and coming coaches, supporting them to be the best coaches they can be. Brian has held many roles on the committee over his time at the Club, including President. Brian is always one of the first people on the grounds on a Saturday morning to help with setting up the equipment and one of the last to leave in the afternoon, once everything is packed away.

31 Vikings Community Champions

actewagl shield award nominations 35 VIkings community champions

In 40 Years, Vikings has achieved many things. Vikings prides itself on one of its purposes; to foster Sport in the Valley. This purpose can only be realised through the enduring contribution of the people in our Sporting community who make the Valley a better place to live and play sport. These people demonstrate the Vikings spirit by building a sense of community; fostering and encouraging sport participation and aiding the Valley in ensuring social connectivity.

Tonight, we would like to honour these Vikings Champions and thank them for their contribution and impact they have had in their respective sports. Taryn Langdon Lake Tuggeranong Rowing Club

As an elite athlete in rowing and the ACT Academy of Sport scholarship holder, Taryn’s highlight was a Silver medal achievement at the 1998 Junior World Championships in Austria. This was also the year in which she became an inaugural member of Lake Tuggeranong Rowing Club when it officially opened.

Following the conclusion of her elite Rowing career, and true to her interest and dedication as a highly spirited member of the Tuggeranong community, Taryn grew her coaching experience and worked tirelessly to develop Lake Tuggeranong Rowing Club, an affiliate club of the Vikings Group, whilst earnestly committing herself to Club Captain duties. During this period, she was well respected for her immense Rowing knowledge of both the sport itself, the boat fleet and associated equipment. Taryn was steadfast in her learn-to-row coaching and club session coaching roles, all the while encouraging both competitive level and recreational rowers. Taryn’s unyielding efforts and contribution towards helping to build this community-based club saw its steady growth and success.

Her knowledge of this sport earned her an executive position on the Rowing ACT Board along with her major role in the Winter Time Trial Series. Taryn was also a selector for the ACT Youth Rowing Program. Taryn initiated the annual Tuggeranong Cup Regatta to open each rowing regatta season in an effort to bring ACT’s local competition further afield from Lake Burley Griffin to Lake Tuggeranong. This has encouraged the ACT rowing fraternity, including school clubs, to experience a different venue and to promote the Tuggeranong Community.

Taryn’s interest in rowing saw her extend her skills to Surf Boat Rowing and competing in the Vikings team in the biennial George Bass Competition. Although Taryn eventually moved on from Rowing, her deep sense of community spirit for the Tuggeranong Valley has never waned. She has been a major contributor to the planning, organisation and implementation of the annual SouthFest event since its inauguration.

Her strong interest and compassion to progress her community has led Taryn to robust connections with local government to help build a better Tuggeranong Community. The essence of true Vikings Spirit! Ant Davies Vikings Junior Rugby

Ant can be regarded as someone who has always lived and breathed the Vikings Spirit. From six years as a Junior Vikings player, to a parent with playing sons and to further involvement as a coach and member of the Junior club’s Executive, spanning some nine years. As Vikings celebrates 40 years so do the Junior Vikings club - one of the oldest and longest running junior sports clubs in the Valley. Ant was part of the first season at Vikings Juniors - his love of Rugby, all thing Vikings and Tuggeranong is born out of those early days playing in the blood and bandages for six years.

Ant returned to the Viking Juniors fold in 2012 when his sons joined the U7s and U8s. Both are still playing in 2020 in the U14s and U16s. Ant’s commitment and tireless work for the Viking Juniors is often in the background - one of a number of hard-working volunteers devoting many hundreds of hours in a mountain of tasks each season. Ant has spent five years as Vice President and has coached for nearly eight years – including two years as coach of two age groups along with a committee role. Ant has a passion for Vikings Rugby and wants to see Rugby and Vikings grow in the Valley and is always looking at opportunities to promote and recruit new families into the Vikings Rugby Community.

He has in recent years worked with Viking Seniors to develop the level of coaching within the Juniors and has helped support the 2020 introduction of the exciting new collaboration between Viking Seniors and Juniors introducing the Gen-Red program. Ant has also been successful in bringing on Makwarra as a sponsor of the Junior Vikings - being an Indigenous Business for the last three years Makwarra have helped over 30 players registration fees in Vikings Juniors with a focus on Indigenous junior players and other players with hardship.

Vikings community champions Roz Waters Tuggeranong Valley Womens Bowls Club

Roz took up the challenging sport of Lawn Bowls in October 1980 and has continued to be a very active participant since then. She joined the Tuggeranong Valley Women’s Bowling Club upon moving to Canberra on 1 April 1995 where she has been a very energetic force. In 1997 Roz became a Level 1 Umpire followed by becoming a Level 2 Umpire, a position she held until 2015.

Roz has been recognised numerous times for her outstanding contribution to umpiring at the Australian Sides Championships and other events. In 2019, at the age of 85, she participated in the National Officiating Accreditation Scheme and renewed her qualifications as a National Umpire. In 2002 Roz took on the role of President of the Ladies Bowling Club, a position she held for three years and only relinquished in line with the Club’s Constitution which only allows the appointments to be for three years. On 20 June 2009 the Tuggeranong Valley Women’s Bowling Club conferred Life Membership on Roz which is an accolade highly treasured.

This award demonstrates the high regard that members of the club have for Roz and her dedication to the sport and all participants. The Vikings Group also acknowledged Roz’s contribution to the club and the local community by awarding her with the Volunteer of the Year Award in 2007. In 2012 Roz took on the demanding role of Treasurer, a position she still holds and has no intention of relinquishing in the near future.

She has worked tirelessly in the background for many years holding numerous positions on the committee. In total Roz has been on the committee of the TVWBC for the past 22 years working in most positions including Vice-President. Speaking to all members of both bowling clubs located at Tuggeranong you will not find a member who does not appreciate and acknowledge her selfless contribution over the past 24 years to the sport of Lawn Bowls in the local community. She continually demonstrates the Viking Spirit in all that she does.

When approached about this nomination she replied, “I am not much of a bowler but my main aim has always been to help our bowlers and officials stand-up and be proud of each and every achievement. The support group of other members always makes me feel special and needed.” Kim Terrell Tuggeranong Vikings Water Polo

Founding Father Kim was one of the members who began the Club 25 years ago. Not only did Kim begin the Club, but has spent 25 years on committees, both at Vikings Water Polo and at ACT Level. He has coached members both young and old. Kim has been a driving force for all members, to encourage all to be fair and supporting of each other, while driving members to reach their full potential. He has welcomed people who wanted to grow in the sport as well as those that just want to play socially.

Kim says “As a past President, Coach and player with the Vikings Water Polo Club I helped hundreds of children and seniors learn to play Water Polo and recognise the value of teamwork, collaboration and hard work. I am particularly proud of the Club’s ability to help players of all levels and provide pathways for elite juniors and seniors to represent the ACT, NSW and Australia in Water Polo. The ongoing success of the Club after 25 years is a testament to the value it brings to the Tuggeranong community and the broader ACT region.”

35 Rene Bol Tuggeranong Vikings Water Polo

Rene is a former Olympian, having played in the 80’s for Canada. Rene has been instrumental in the Club’s development as one of the founding members. Rene specialised in coaching juniors at the club, and was instrumental in starting an early training program. His time and effort in developing young players and helping to achieve their best proved a strong basis for Vikings Water Polo. The club was very strong in the 90’s and 2000’s with many of the young athletes going onto represent the State and Country in representative competitions.

What the Viking Spirit means, Rene – “The Viking Spirit is one of fairness, equality, community based and distributed to all potential athletes and sporting groups to enhance participation, striving toward excellence and assisting with various forms of funding to help lessen the financial burden placed on families. As a “Viking”, you have a sense of identity, strength and courage, just like the viking warriors of the past.” John Fox Tuggeranong Vikings Water Polo

John came to Canberra on an inaugural water polo scholarship from Victoria. John is not only a member of the Club, but is a former Australian Olympian from Sydney 2000, and also an Australian Olympic Coach – London 2012. John has demonstrated the Viking Spirit through coaching aspiring youngsters within the club while building friendships and supporting the community as a whole.

Having a former Olympic coach and player within the club, means that the aspiring players and club members can gain an enormous amount of knowledge within their own game. It helps them be proud to represent our club to know that someone of that stature is able to support, encourage and teach them to be the best they can.

About Vikings, John says “Arriving from Victoria I was seeking to play for a club that not only provided opportunities to extend my water polo participation, but also one that had camaraderie amongst its members. Vikings was a perfect fit under the tutelage of Olympian Rene Bol as Head Coach. Throughout my time at Vikings I have made lifelong friends, many of whom have their playing days long behind them. However, many of these former players have generously put back into the Club either serving on committees, administrating, coaching, parenting future generations and generally supporting the club. I find myself fortunate to have been able to also foster the Viking spirit through coaching and contributing to the forward direction of the Water Polo Club.

“Throughout my career I have also had the pleasure of fostering relationships with many non-water polo Vikings members from a host of other sports. The common trait that I found prevalent amongst many Vikings members across all sports was the pride members had in representing the Tuggeranong community in club, state, National and international competition. I have been most privileged to be able to perpetuate these values amongst the sporting community in my role as player and coach.” Pina Kidd Tuggeranong Valley Cricket Club

Pina continues to be the heart of the club. A multiple time Volunteer of the Year nominee, a typical week includes running the clubhouse and preparing players lunches, scoring first grade, being Assistant Treasurer and valued member of the committee. Pina has for many years been the life blood of the club, and year after year finds new and old ways to keep the club ticking. As well as all official roles, Pina has also been heavily involved with the club raising funds for the McGrath Foundation through our Pink Stumps initiative.

Vikings community champions Rod Harrod Tuggeranong Vikings Triathlon Club

Rod has made a significant contribution to the Club since he joined in approximately 2003. Rod is an exemplary citizen and a fine triathlete, completing races of all distances from sprint and standard races through to competing in Ironman races. He has also had the opportunity to represent Australia at age-group Triathlon World Championships. He volunteered for service on the club committee holding both Vice President and Secretary roles in 2006/07, as well as the Vice President role in 2007/08, 2014 to 2016 and as President from 2016 to 2018. Rod was a respected voice in providing guidance to the Club committee and members following some internal disruptions to governance, demonstrating both his commitment to the club and the respect in which he is held in the community. Rod is always willing to lend a hand.

Rod is also an active member in the ACT Triathlon Community, regularly racing and volunteering to support local races over the years. In recent years, Rod has found his niche in the commentary role at local triathlon events, which he has also done several times for the biennial George Bass Surf Boat marathon. Rod has also achieved quite a lot outside of triathlon. In addition to lengthy service in the Royal Australian Navy and work with the George Bass Surf Boat marathon, he is also a White Ribbon Ambassador for the prevention of violence towards women.

Rod is well loved and respected by many. He is a regular at club training sessions, in particular swimming and running and often has welcoming words to new members and is happy to offer encouragement and advice to other members. The Club is lucky to have men and women of his calibre as members. It is his dedication to serving the community that best shows how Rod is an ideal club ambassador, demonstrating the Club’s community-based culture and healthy lifestyle values. John Grady Tuggeranong Little Athletics Association

A servant of 24 years, John started in 1996 with Tuggeranong Little Athletics Association. John was an age group manager and of the 35 young U6 boys, there were still eight of the same mates 10 years later in 2006. John was a committee member from 1997, President from 2000-2003 and Head Coach from 2000, where he still is today.

John – “Being involved in a community that helps young people be the best they can be and ensuring they have fun in the process. I enjoy coaching and being involved in Little Athletics. Always being there for the children and their families means so much to me. I value being part of the Tuggeranong Little Athletics and in turn the Vikings community.” Barbara Eddowes Tuggeranong Little Athletics Association

Barbara commenced with TLAA in 2009, as most parents do, with her kids’ involvement. Barbara took a very hands-on approach to the Club by serving as Secretary and Committee member from 2011-2012, President from 2013-2017 as well as coach from 2014-2017.

Although not with little athletics anymore, Barbara continues to contribute to the Vikings and Tuggeranong sporting community in her current role as Secretary of South Canberra Tuggeranong Athletics Club.

37 Lyndon Langdon Lake Tuggeranong Rowing Club

Since Lyndon became a member of Lake Tuggeranong Rowing Club in 2005, his initial interest in becoming a rower soon saw him combining his new sport with a strong energetic drive to build a better fleet of rowing boats. Other clubs’ boat cast offs became newly fitted out boats in Lyndon’s ‘spare’ time, proudly bearing a new name of either Tuggeranong suburbs or nearby landscape features, an initiative of his that has remained a LTRC tradition. Lyndon’s advocacy for active club participation and improvements soon saw him in the Club’s Presidency role for several years.

Lyndon’s pride in the Tuggeranong community is evident in the many ways he has helped develop Lake Tuggeranong as a vibrant activity hub. Lyndon has remained dedicated to keeping the immediate environment safe, clean and usable and maintaining communication channels between fellow lake users. Lyndon worked closely with Taryn Langdon when she initiated the annual Tuggeranong Cup Regatta with Rowing ACT to open each rowing regatta season in an effort to bring ACT’s local competition further afield from Lake Burley Griffin to Lake Tuggeranong. This has encouraged the ACT rowing fraternity, including school clubs, to experience a different venue and to promote the Tuggeranong Community. Each year Lyndon continues to work closely with Rowing ACT to ensure that this event lives on.

As continuing Club President, Lyndon fulfilled his duties in fine detail and he attended a council meeting in which the agenda focused on development around Lake Tuggeranong. Lyndon ensured the clubs facilities were up to scratch, receiving a government fund to upgrade the boatshed.

Lyndon has also been a mainstay and backbone for Tuggeranong’s annual SouthFest event since its inauguration, ensuring that all stall holders are equipped appropriately and the day’s order of events runs smoothly. Geoff Mason Tuggeranong Little Athletics Association

With 14 years’ service, Geoff started his affiliation when his children started Little A’s but continued well after they had finished. Geoff has held numerous roles including President, Vice President, Secretary, Registrar, Competition Officer, Data Entry, Records Officer and Starter.

On the Vikings Spirit in the Tuggeranong Community, Geoff sees it as providing the opportunity and support for all community members to participate in sport at whatever level and to encourage all who participate to do their best. David Murphy Tuggeranong Vikings Swim Club

David has coached hundreds of Tuggeranong swimmers over his 22 years; as well as coaching for the ACT swim team. He is well-respected throughout the ACT and NSW swimming community.

David is incredibly determined, committed and professional in his approach. He very rarely misses a session and fits his substantial coaching hours with family and other work commitments. He is at the pool at 5:30 for morning sessions, and leaves at 7:00 for evening sessions each day.

Mr Murphy, as the kids know him, is firm but fair. He cares about his swim team and his coaching team. In between the hard work, he encourages kids to have fun and develop friendships. The kids also love it when he tells one of his entertaining stories because it gives them a break from their tough sets!

David has coached swimmers who have competed at international, national, state and local level. Several of his swimmers have represented at Paralympics, junior Pan Pacific Games, youth Olympics and Olympic/ Commonwealth Games trials. His coaching has helped to establish many swimming careers overseas at college level and has produced many state champions. Aside from high level achievements, his coaching has helped kids at all levels of swimming develop confidence and friendships.

Vikings community champions Matthew O'Loughlin Tuggeranong Vikings Baseball Club

If you were to cast your mind back about 40 years, to a time when the Licensed Club forefathers were in fervent discussions about founding a club, long before a sod had been turned, you would have seen a young Matthew O’Loughlin and his dad going door to door canvassing potential members to be part of a Licensed Club, a place where people could come together in the Valley to share a social occasion, to play sport, of which baseball was one of the first of the affiliated sports club members.

Fast forward those 40 years and you can still find Matthew out on the diamond on a Saturday afternoon playing C Grade, albeit a bit slower these days, it is obvious to see that his enthusiasm for the game has not waned. If you were to add up all of his games over 40 years to include those played for Tuggeranong Rangers who developed into the Tuggeranong Vikings, winter league games in Wollongong and representative games across juniors and seniors, he is not far from 10,000 games.

Off the field, Matthew has been a long serving member of the Baseball Club committee. He has held many positions from long standing President to being the current Sports Council Representative. Matthew is a very strong cultural leader within the Club and he is always willing to lend a hand on game days or simply to impart some well established knowledge to a younger player coming through the ranks.

Matthew is the latest person to be inducted as a Life Member of the Baseball Club. It was well received amongst all members of the Club as a very worthy recognition of his hard work and selfless determination. It is this hard work and determination that has ensured the success and sustainability of the Club to date and establishes a very clear precedent for our members to sustain this success into the future. It’s not always easy but Matthew is always there leading by example. Every club has those members that enjoy being part of something they love, to be part of a community organisation, who genuinely want to see others do well, who go above and beyond and who ask for very little in return especially when it comes to public recognition. The Baseball Club have one of the good ones. Jane McGlew South Canberra Tuggeranong Athletics Club

With 18 years committee experience, Jane is one of those very special volunteers who is always willing to pitch in with whatever needs doing. She is a constant presence at just about every single athletics meet in Canberra, including school, masters, junior and open events - always in charge of the photo finish and results area. She also volunteers at the SCT kids cross country series throughout winter whenever she can - and is often also an official at national championships and similar events. She was the Vikings Club representative for South Canberra Tuggeranong for at least 10 years.

Jane is a constant, cheerful and calming presence for the club and for athletics across the ACT. She is one of the unsung heroes without whom competing, trying to achieve personal bests and go on to greater things would not be possible. Without Jane, SCT, the Tuggeranong community and athletics more broadly would be poorer and a lot of weight would fall on the other volunteers.

In 2019 she was selected to represent Australia at the World Relay Championships and proved that with persistence and strength anything is achievable. It has been a hard and long road for her to get back into the ‘gold & green’ especially with the depth of the women’s 400m at the moment. She is doing well and has set her sights on Tokyo 2020. Angeline is a proud indigenous person and received the Indigenous Athlete of the Year award from Cathy Freeman in 2009. Looking ahead to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Angeline has been cited as a potential star for Aboriginal children to look up too.
