Centre for Studies in Religion and Society Graduate Student Association The Centre for Studies in Religion and Society (CSRS) was established at the University of Victoria in 1991 to foster the scholarly study of religion in relation to any and all aspects of society, both contemporary and historical. The CSRS Graduate Student Association, led by graduate students who hold fellowships at the CSRS, draws together UVic graduate students from a variety of departments and academic programs who share an interest in areas related to the research mandate of the CSRS. This issue of Illumine represents a continuation of the Association’s tradition of producing an annual publication containing graduate students’ written scholarship exploring the interrelation of religion and society. Copies of back issues are available from the CSRS at the address above. Illumine is published annually, and welcomes submissions from graduate students enrolled in Canadian educational institutions. CST is not a social science and its texts are not pragmatic primers for social activists. It is a normative exercise of Church teaching, a kind of comprehensive applied – although far from systematic – social moral theology. This volume is a scholarly engagement with this 130-year-old documentary tradition. Its twenty-three essays aim to provide a constructive, historically sophisticated, critical exegesis of all the major (and some of the minor) documents of CST. Inoltre tanto di lui ancora c’è nelle vene della Chiesa d’oggi, perché molti cattolici, compreso chi scrive, hanno avuto docenti o semplicemente degli anziani in famiglia che li hanno istruiti sulla Fede, essendo nati ai tempi di Papa Pecci. È anche il primo Papa filmato e registrato della storia e ancora oggi possiamo, per qualche secondo, vederlo benedire nei Giardini Vaticani (simile per età, magrezza, difficoltà di deambulazione e vestiario all’attuale Papa Emerito) o ascoltare la sua voce profonda pregare l’Ave Maria pochi mesi prima di morire. A livello di rispetto della Tradizione nulla cambia rispetto a Pio IX: la differenza è che Leone XIII, uomo di vasta cultura, grande latinista e tomista, ma soprattutto uomo dalla Fede rocciosa e semplice insieme, era interessato a tutto ciò che il mondo moderno stava vivendo, come pure a tutto ciò che si stava muovendo a livello ecclesiale, specie nella base. Egli essenzialmente cerca di dare una risposta cattolica, in alternativa alle altre proposte ideologiche e politiche, che teme possano traviare la mente e i cuori dei fedeli a lui affidati.

    ABSTRACT Ontology, Ecclesiology, Nonviolence: the Witness Against War in the Theologies of John Howard Yoder, Dorothy Day, and William Stringfellow Myles Werntz, Ph.D. Mentor: Barry A. Harvey, Ph.D. This dissertation argues that nonviolence bears witness to a particular form of social existence visible in the church. War, I argue, describes a form of social existence which is a counter social ontology to the existence given by Christ to the church. By examining the interrelationship of social ontology, ecclesiology, and nonviolence in the work of John Howard Yoder, Dorothy Day, and William Stringfellow, I argue that a nonviolence which is thoroughly Christian must account for how nonviolence is related to the structures and practices of the church, but also how nonviolence bears witness to a new form of social existence in the church. Discussion of these three figures occurs broadly within the context of the Vietnam War, exploring how nonviolence for each was not an abstracted ethic, but an act which witnessed to a new social reality present in the church. Discussing how nonviolence bears witness to a new social existence made known through the church occurs in uniquely configured ways for each figure, which I describe in chapters devoted to each one. The result is an ecumenical dialogue among Yoder (a Mennonite), Day, (a Roman Catholic), and Stringfellow (an Episcopalian) about how to describe this social existence, how the church structures and practices contribute to the articulation of nonviolence, and how to speak theologically about the normativity of nonviolence for Christian faith and practice. In the conclusion, I bring the insights from these three together, arguing for a more fulsome way to describe Christian nonviolence.
