KOSKI V.1111MT For sale by the Superintendent of Documents, U.S. Government Printing Office Washington, D.C. 20402 - Price $3.75 PREFACE Hungarian Graded Readerand accompanying tape recordings are designed to develop read;ng ability in Hungarian through the coordination of audio material with the printed page, with minimum recourse to translation. They are intended for use in an academic prouam to develop student ability to read Hungarian spontaneously. The fifty-six reading selections have been arranged and edited to provide a sequencing suitable to the growing corzpetence of students as they progress from the beginning through the intermediate stages of reading proficiency. It has been an aim in the editing to retain as much as possible of the original style and flavor while inodifying constructions and vocabulary as necessary for the benefit of students. The text is intended to supplement a beginning course in Hungarian and to be introduced when the student has developed control of about 700 lexical items and can manipulate with fluency much of the basic structure of Hungarian. It may also be used effectively in an intermediate course. Among its features are varied lexical and grammatical drills which are included throughout. These, together with the comprehensive questions after each reading selec- tion, help the student develop facility in conversing and in using vocabulary and structure beyond the basic course. The accompanying tapes emphasize the spoken language and are a means of making the material live and realistic. Hungarian Gmded Readeris the work of the Hungarian staff of the School of Language Studies under the direction of Augustus A. Koski. Ilona Mihalyfy compiled and edited the reading selections, vocabulary lists and drills. After her departure Eva Eszenyi assisted in bringing the text to completion. She voiced the tapes of most of the reading selections and drills and proofread the typescript before publication. Donna A. Kowalski, lrma C. Ponce and Linda E. Terrio prepared the typescript. The tape recordings were produced in the Foreign Service institute studios with the technical assistance of Jose M. Ramirez.
