As Church leaders who speak different languages come into con tact with each other, they often feel and express the need for greater proficiency in English, the commonly recognized language of international communication. English for Latter-day Saints, an English language learn ing program centered around LDS situations and gospel topics has been created to meet this need. History The beginnings of En~lish for Latter-day Saints can be traced back to Munich, Germany where resident Harold B. Lee, speaking at the Europe area conference in August 1973, said, "Think how it would be helpful if everyone of you speaking your native tongue would learn to speak English.

ABSTRACT This study attempts to explain why ALL of South Korean presidents, without exception and notwithstanding their individual major contributions to the process of Korea’s development, have fallen victim to disgraceful downfalls. For the analysis, I employ S.N. Sangmpam’s middle-range theory that establishes a causal link between society-rooted politics and political outcomes. Building on his analytical frameworks that non-Western countries are characterized by over-politicization in politics as a function of social context, I argue that patterned downfalls of all Korean presidents are an institutional outcome of over-politicization in Korean politics, which is itself a function of not fully entrenched capitalist society. In support of my thesis, I test three hypotheses. Hypotheses one and two posit Korea’s tenacious traditional and cultural traits as an internal modifier of capitalism and the nation’s dependent nature of its relationships with the United States and Japan as an external factor that prevented capitalist entrenchment in Korean society.

After a long period of providing schools for its membership in the Intermountain West of the United States, the Latter-day Saints ultimately settled on a system of supplementary religious education, designed to work in concert with public education systems. During the 1950s as the Church began to gain an international following, Church leaders moved to establish an international system of schools to meet their needs.

  • From World War to Cold War: Music in US-Korea Relations, 1941-1960
From World War to Cold War: Music in US-Korea Relations, 1941-1960 Dissertation Presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Hye-jung Park Graduate Program in Music The Ohio State University 2019 Committee: Danielle Fosler-Lussier, Ph.D., Advisor Ryan T. Skinner, Ph.D. Mitchell B. Lerner, Ph.D. Copyright by Hye-jung Park 2019 Abstract This dissertation examines music in US-Korea relations from 1941 to 1960. Beginning during World War II, the US government disseminated Western classical and American music in Korea. After the war, the United States also gained the confidence of Koreans by supporting Korean traditional music that had been suppressed under Japanese colonial rule. Yet South Koreans were not merely passive recipients of US propaganda. As the Korean War divided Korea into North and South, South Korean officials used music to affirm the anti-Communist alliance between South Korea and the United States. American music spread rapidly in South Korea, contributing to the formation of South Korean identities different from those of the Communist North. By tracing a history of musical relations in the transitional period from the colonial era to the early Cold War, this project emphasizes that US Cold War music propaganda programs were not an entirely new initiative but built on the foundations laid in the 1940s. By demonstrating that a peripheral country used music as a tool for political negotiations with a superpower, this project also expands the horizons of scholarship on music propaganda, which has focused overwhelmingly on US and Soviet interventions in Europe.

It is particularly appropriate that a volume on Hawaiians of Korean ancestry should appear at this time, for in recent years the university has grown to a position of leadership in Korean studies, and planning is underway for the establishment of a Korean Center. Moreover, during the long period of colonial status, Hawaii served as a rallying point for a major segment of the Korean liberation movement. The first generation of Korean immigrants who sustained that movement here are now passing on, and Mr. Gardner's efforts have come at a moment when their experience and efforts can still be appraised on a firsthand basis. It is hoped that the materials presented here will serve as the foundation for a social history of the Koreans in Hawaii.
