On the cover: The Fulmer Falls located in the Childs Recreation Area in the Poconos Mountains, Pennsylvania. photo by derek ramsey © 2006 editor’s note The Power of the Word When Alma faced a developing Zoramite situation, he decided to “try the virtue of the word of God,” knowing that “the preaching of the word had a great tendency to lead the people to do that which was just—yea, it had had more powerful effect upon the minds of the people than the sword, or anything else” (Alma 31:5). At the centennial mark in the history of the sem- inary program, it is appropriate to consider the power of the word of God in the lives of young seminary students around the world. My personal experience with seminary was limited to one year of early- morning instruction when I was a senior in high school. Because my family lived twenty-two miles from the chapel where our seminary class met at 6:15 a.m., I was often groggy when we met. Our volunteer teacher instructed on the Book of Mormon that year. I think I read only to the end of 2 Nephi. But I went. And I felt the power of the word of God. Seminary was an impor- tant part of my spiritual development and of my commitment to the restored Church of Jesus Christ, as I am sure it has been in the lives of many others the past hundred years. A number of articles in this issue deal with the New Testament, the por- tion of scripture that recounts the saving ministry of the Word, Jesus Christ, and his emissaries. In that era as well as in ours, our Lord’s “gospel came not . in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assur- ance” (1 Thessalonians 1:5). Other articles herein focus on “sacred learning,” on reviving a “dead” class, and on the pathway provided to access the Lord’s mercy, all of which topics involve the word of God and its power. As always, we at the RSC invite you to thoroughly explore this issue of the Religious Educator, trusting that its contents will assist you in more fully learning, and teaching with power, the word of God. I hold on to a thread Wthat goes back to the early days when the resources for this program were very scarce. I traveled with President Spencer W. Kimball years ago. He held the office that I now hold as President of the Quorum of the Twelve. We were visiting seminaries for youth who attended Indian schools in Montana and South Dakota. We met in the one-room home of Sister Two Dogs. She was sitting on the bed, and about a dozen youngsters were gathered around her on the dirt floor. She was teaching a seminary lesson. From those humble beginnings, we now have 375,008 students in semi- nary classes in 143 countries with over 38,000 volunteer and full-time teachers worldwide. We invest much in our youth. We know of your worth and your potential. 1 2 Religious Educator · vol. 13 no. 3 · 2012 Wisdom Will Help You Combat the Enemy I speak as one who has seen the past and would prepare you for the future. I was trained by President Marion G. Romney, Counselor in the First Presidency. He once told me, “Do not just tell them so that they understand; teach them so that they cannot misunderstand!” He also taught me that I must have the courage of my convictions. You are growing up in enemy territory. When you become mature spiri- tually, you will understand how the adversary has infiltrated the world around you. He is in homes, entertainment, the media, language—everything around you. In most cases his presence is undetected. Pornography is just one example. I want to tell you that which will be of most worth and most desirable. The scriptures say, “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom,” and I would add, “with all [your] getting, get [going]”!1 I do not have time to waste and neither do you. So listen up! Our Present Blessings Come from Past Sacrifices The moment I decided to be a teacher is very clear in my mind. During World War II, I was in my early 20s and a pilot in the Air Force. I was stationed on the little island of Ie Shima. This island, a small, lonely one about as big as a postage stamp, is just off the northern tip of Okinawa. One lonely summer evening I sat on a cliff to watch the sun go down. I remember looking at the moon and thinking, “That is the very same moon that shines down on my home in Utah.” I was pondering what I would do with my life after the war, if I was fortunate enough to survive. What did I want to be? It was on that night that I decided I wanted to be a teacher. I reasoned that teachers are always learning. Learning is a basic purpose of life. I first taught seminary in 1949 in Brigham City. I had been a student in that seminary in my high school days. There were three of us as teachers: the principal, Abel S. Rich; Brother A. Theodore Tuttle; and myself. Brother Rich had opened that seminary as the second released-time seminary in the Church. The first was established in 1912—the Granite Seminary in Salt Lake City. I learned much from Brother Rich. He was a prominent and success- ful community and Church leader. He was never hesitant. He taught me to consider a problem, determine what gospel principle was involved, and then make a decision. His philosophy was simply “Do what is right; let the conse- quence follow.”2 How to Survive in Enemy Territory 3 Brother Rich had lived through the history of seminary and talked freely about it. Through him I became acquainted with the old “warhorses,” as he called them. As I think back, a stream of memories comes forward. I recall William E. Berrett, who opened seminary in the Uintah Basin. During the summer, he walked from town to town recruiting students for his class.

    Religious Studies Center Style Guide, 1 October 2018 Authors who submit manuscripts for potential publication should generally follow the guidelines in The Chicago Manual of Style, 17th ed. (Chicago: The University of Chicago Press, 2017) and Style Guide for Editors and Writers, 5th ed. (Salt Lake City: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2013). This style guide summarizes the main principles in the other style guides and lists a few exceptions to their guidelines. Formatting 1. Use double-spacing throughout the manuscript and the endnotes. Use one-inch margins, and insert page numbers at the bottom of the page. Use a Times New Roman 12-point font for both the body of the manuscript and the notes. Use only one space after periods. 2. If you have images, add captions and courtesy lines (such as courtesy of Church History Library, Salt Lake City) to the Word file. However, do not insert images in the Word files; submit them separately. Images should be 300 dpi or better (TIFF or JPG files). File names and captions should match (Fig. 1.1 = chapter 1, figure 1). Headings 3. Update: Include headings to break up the text. First-Level Headings First-level headings should be flush left and bolded, as in the example above. Capitalize internal words except for articles (a, an, and the), conjunctions (and, but, or, for, so, and yet), prepositions, and the word to in infinitive phrases. Second-Level Headings Second-level headings should be flush left and italicized. Capitalize like first-level headings. Third-level headings. Third-level headings should be italicized, followed by a period, and run in to the text; capitalization should be handled sentence-style (capitalize the first word and proper nouns).

In Jonah, the prophet is instructed to go to Nineveh “and preach against it.” However, instead of following God’s command, Jonah runs away from the Lord, fleeing in the opposite direction toward Tarshish. While he is aboard the ship to Tarshish, God sends a violent storm to threaten the ship.The crew, upon determining Jonah as the catalyst for the storm, throw him overboard. Immediately the sea becomes calm, and God sends a “great fish” to swallow Jonah whole, where he remains for three days and nights. There Jonah prays to the Lord and the fish expels him onto dry land. He at once heads to Nineveh to finally obey God’s command—and the Ninevites immediately repent and turn to the Lord. Seeing God’s compassion toward them, Jonah becomes angry and sulks away, prompting a rebuke from the Lord. In Malachi, we hear both God’s lamentation and indictment against post-exilic Israel. Though the temple had long been rebuilt and the people had long been established in the land after returning from exile, their commitment to faithfully live as God’s people began to wane—they had shown contempt for God’s name (1:6), offered false worship (1:7-14), led others into sin (2:7-9), broken God’s laws (2:11-16), called evil “good” (2:17), kept God’s tithes and offerings to themselves (3:8- 12), and became arrogant (3:13- 15).

ALLAN CHAPPLE* The Gospel of John has Jesus intervening dramatically in the TemplE (John 2:13–22) before he bEgins his public ministry in Galilee (John 3:24; 4:3; cf. Mark 1:14). HowevEr, the only such event rEported in the Synoptics occurs at the end of Jesus’ ministry (Mark 11:15–18 and parallels). What are wE to makE of this discrep- ancy? Logically, there are four possible explanations: 1. The Synoptics are right about when the event took place—so that John has moved it to the beginning of the ministry, presumably for theological reasons. This is the view of the overwhelming majority. 2. John is right about when this happened—so the Synoptic Gospels have moved it to the end of Jesus’ ministry (again, presumably for theological reasons).1 3.     Heavenly Visions and Prophetic Calls in Isaiah 6 (2 Nephi 16), the Book of Mormon, and the Revelation of John Stephen D. Ricks Isaiah's call, which involved a vision of God on his throne, a heavenly book, songs of praise, a commission, protests, and reassurances, compares instructively to the calls of Lehi and John. From writing room table to the high throne of heaven, from the beginning of time to the end of the world, the visions of Isaiah, Lehi, and John the Revelator span the cos­ mos. Of all the prophets of ancient Israel or of the early church, none come as warmly recommended in the Book of Mormon as are Isaiah and John, the apostle of the Lamb. Nephi3 records the risen Lord as saying,"Great are the words of Isaiah" (see 3 Nephi 23:1 ), and an angel affirmed to Nephi that the things that the apostle John should write "are just and true" (1 Nephi 14:23). The writings of Isaiah and many parts of the Book of Mormon pronounce prophecies of judgment and hope on Israel. In the Bible, Isaiah's message is echoed in the Revela­ tion of John, which provides hope for the people of the Lord but pronounces judgment on Babylon, or the world. This paper, illustrated with Christian religious art from the medieval and early Renaissance eras, considers common elements of these heavenly visions and prophetic calls as recorded in the writings of Isaiah, in the Book of Mormon, and in the book of Revelation. Isaiah's call to be a prophet in Isaiah 6 and Lehi's call in 1 Nephi 1--€xperiences that are echoed by John in Revelation 1-5------contain basic elements of "call narratives": (1) a his­ torical introduction that provides the setting of the vision; (2) the divine confrontation between the prophet and God or another holy being; (3) the prophet's reaction to the 172 • Stephen D.
