The Institute con- sists of the Office of Standard Reference Materials and the following divisions: Analytical Chemistry—Polymers—Metallurgy—Inorganic Materials—Reactor Radiation—Physical Chemistry. THE INSTITUTE FOR APPLIED TECHNOLOGY provides technical services to pro- mote the use of available technology and to facilitate technological innovation in indus- try and Government; cooperates with public and private organizations leading to the development of technological standards (including mandatory safety standards), codes and methods of test; and provides technical advice and services to Government agencies upon request. We estimate the long-range atmospheric transport of elemental mercury in the Northern Hemisphere and present new data for volcanic eruptions in Iceland. At the Polar station Amderma (Russia) of long-term observations of elemental mercury concentration (2009-2010), a change in the dynamics was recorded. For seasonal variability at the period from 2001-2009 negative trend (-0.66 ng per month) was fixed. However, the analysis of the last three years of measurement (2010-2012) showed the greatest positive trend (+0.97 ng per month). In April 2010 and the highest positive trend was 15 observed (+0.24 ng per month), for the first time for the whole (2001-2013). At the same time, high concentrations of gaseous elemental mercury in the range from 1.81 to 2.58 ng m-3 in Apr-Jun 2010 and from 1.81 to 3.31 ng m-3 in May-Jun 2011 in contrast to the typical concentrations of 1.51 ng m-3.

Tectonic activity that recycles crust along active plate margins, erosion, and the burial of impact craters underneath layers of sediment and lava have either removed or concealed the majority of the Earth’s cosmic scars. Only 199 impact structures (counting fields of small impact craters produced during the same event as one) and 40 individual horizons of proximal and distal impact ejecta (again, counting layers with the same age at different localities as one) have thus far been recognized on our planet (Fig. 1). Those impact structures and deposits span a time from more than ~3.4 billion years (Ga) before present (Archean impact spherule layers in South Africa and Western Australia) to roughly 6 years ago (the Chelyabinsk airburst in Russia on February 15, 2013, which shattered windows and whose main stony meteorite mass produced a 8-meter-wide circular hole in the frozen Lake Chebarkul; see Issue 133). Although impact rates have dramatically decreased since the early portion of solar system history, we see that meteorite impacts are still an ongoing geologic process and remain a constant threat (Fig.

C. 20546 17 August 1970 e This is the second of three reports to be submitted to NASA under Grant NGR 22-007-194, concerned with the assignment I of names to craters on the far-side of the Moon. As noted in the first report to NASA under the subject grant, the Working Group on Lunar Nomenclature (of Commission 17 of the International Astronomical Union, IAU) originally assigned the selected names to features on the far-side of the Moon in a . semi-alphabetic arrangement. This plan was criticized, however, by lunar cartographers as (1) unesthetic, and as (2) offering a practical danger of confusion between similar nearby names, par- ticularly in oral usage by those using the maps in lunar exploration. At its meeting in Paris on June 20 --et seq., the Working Group accepted the possible validity of the second criticism above and reassigned the names in a more or less random order, as preferred by the cartographers. They also deleted from the original list, submitted in the first report to NASA under the subject grant, several names that too closely resembled others for convenient oral usage. The Introduction to the attached booklet briefly reviews the solutions reached by the Working Group to this and several other remaining problems, including that of naming lunar features for living astronauts.
