Maryland Taxpayers: Endangered Species? Budget shortfalls are nothing new, and unfortunately neither is the solution with which the Maryland General Assembly has chosen—a massive tax hike. It is truly dis- appointing to see legislators using the current budget shortfall of $1.5 billion as evidence that taxes “need” to be increased. Supporters of these tax hikes are simply unwilling to live within their means and are instead looking for ways to increase government-provided services. They are for- getting that tax changes are not instituted in a vacuum.
