I also completed my Ph.D. in Political Science with a minor in Econometrics from Columbia University and then returned to West Point to serve as an Assistant Professor of Political Science. Constructing, Programming, and Branding Celebrity on Reality Television
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Producing Reality Stardom: Constructing, Programming, and Branding Celebrity on Reality Television A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the Requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Film and Television by Lindsay Nicole Giggey 2017 © Copyright by Lindsay Nicole Giggey 2017 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Producing Reality Stardom: Constructing, Programming, and Branding Celebrity on Reality Television by Lindsay Nicole Giggey Doctor of Philosophy in Film and Television University of California, Los Angeles, 2017 Professor John T. Caldwell, Chair The popular preoccupation with celebrity in American culture in the past decade has been bolstered by a corresponding increase in the amount of reality programming across cable and broadcast networks that centers either on established celebrities or on celebrities in the making. This dissertation examines the questions: How is celebrity constructed, scheduled, and branded by networks, production companies, and individual participants, and how do the constructions and mechanisms of celebrity in reality programming change over time and because of time? I focus on the vocational and cultural work entailed in celebrity, the temporality of its production, and the notion of branding celebrity in reality television. Dissertation chapters will each focus on the kinds of work that characterize reality television production cultures at the network, production company, and individual level, with specific attention paid to programming focused ii on celebrity making and/or remaking. Celebrity is a cultural construct that tends to hide the complex labor processes that make it possible. This dissertation unpacks how celebrity status is the product of a great deal of seldom recognized work and calls attention to the hidden infrastructures that support the production, maintenance, and promotion of celebrity on reality television. -
February 26, 2021 Amazon Warehouse Workers In
February 26, 2021 Amazon warehouse workers in Bessemer, Alabama are voting to form a union with the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU). We are the writers of feature films and television series. All of our work is done under union contracts whether it appears on Amazon Prime, a different streaming service, or a television network. Unions protect workers with essential rights and benefits. Most importantly, a union gives employees a seat at the table to negotiate fair pay, scheduling and more workplace policies. Deadline Amazon accepts unions for entertainment workers, and we believe warehouse workers deserve the same respect in the workplace. We strongly urge all Amazon warehouse workers in Bessemer to VOTE UNION YES. Silverman and Purnell: Barefoot (Contessa) in the Kitchen Teaching Media Quarterly Volume 2, Edition 2 (Winter 2014): Teaching about Food and Media Barefoot (Contessa) in the Kitchen Overview and Rationale It is well known that popular culture represents and perpetuates the gender inequities that exist in our culture. Food media are no exception (Swenson, 2013). In fact, food media use gendered cultural norms to sell audiences their products (the shows, the cookbooks, the advertisements during the shows, etc.). In other words, food media commodify gender by selling audiences what they already understand to be true about gender as a way to increase profit (Forbes, 2013). Food media, and food television in particular, offer sites to examine the cultural struggles of gender. Both food and gender are intensely personal, social, and culturally specific phenomena (Barthes, 2013/1961). Further, television shapes the way we understand culture (Fiske, 2010). According to Cramer (2011): As a manifestation of culture, food is one of the most potent media for conveying meanings related to identity, ethnicity, nationhood, gender, class, sexuality and religion – in short, all those aspects of social, political and relational life that convey who and what we are and what matters to us. -

Bassetti's Banijay
Television Business International Bassetti’s Banijay: ‘We won’t pay insane prices for prodcos’ by Jesse Whittock July 8, 2014 Marco Bassetti, who became CEO of Paris-based production group Banijay in April 2013, tells Jesse Whittock why his company won’t be part of the mega-consolidation currently enveloping the international TV market and about where he is focusing efforts instead. TBI: You’ve now been in the job for more than a year, and have had time to assess the Banijay business. What did you feel needed to be done when you first came in? Sometimes it’s not easy to identify what you need to look at. The company was very well managed before I arrived by [founder] Stephane Courbit and [COO] Francois de Brudaga; in terms of performance on investment, this company has done very well. Banijay is not a big company with a big infrastructure and a big footprint, but is already active in the all genres in the TV business. We’re probably better known outside of France – everybody knows Bunim/Murray in the US and in Europe, [Germany’s] Brainpool is very well known across the continent. The company is really solid in the market in Germany, France, Belgium, the Nordic countries and Spain, but I thought we could change the mindset so that we are strong in local territories while at the same time being a little more focused on international TV. You must always be successful in the local market, but the storytelling needs to be international too. You can make much more money that way, and with a truly international hit you can create your identity too. -
