UNIVERZA V MARIBORU FILOZOFSKA FAKULTETA Oddelek Za Sociologijo UNIVERZA V MARIBORU FILOZOFSKA FAKULTETA Oddelek za sociologijo Diplomsko delo KULTURA IN UMETNOST 19. IN 20. STOLETJA V OBČINI SLOVENJ GRADEC Mentor Kandidatka: Izr. prof. dr. Andrej VOVKO Alenka TRIPLAT Somentor: Doc. dr. Igor KRAMBERGER Maribor, februar 2009 1 ZAHVALA Najprej se iskreno zahvaljujem mentorju izr. prof. dr. Andreju Vovku in somentorju doc. dr. Andreju VOVKU in somentorju dr. Igorju KRAMBERGERJU avtorsko delo. V diplomskem delu so uporabljeni viri in literatura korektno navedeni; teksti niso prepisani brez navedbe avtorjev. Alenka TRIPLAT Razbor, februar 2009 3 POVZETEK Pričujoče delo predstavlja kulturo in umetnost v občini Slovenj Gradec v 19. in 20. stoletju. KLJUČNE BESEDE: sociološki vidik, Slovenj Gradec, 19. in 20. stoletje, kultura, umetnost, šolstvo, glasba, Mesto glasnik miru. 5 ABSTRACT This paper is about culture and art in the municipality of Slovenj Gradec in 19th and 20th centuries. The purpose of my paper is to describe culture and art in the municipality in a previously mentioned era, as well as to find out which changes in society occurred in Slovenj Gradec in 19th and 20th centuries. I am also interested in how the development of the town in the past helped to the development of culture and art nowadays. Slovenj Gradec and its surroundings belong to the most interesting and culturally the richest parts of Slovenia. Archaeological findings in this area are a sign of a rich cultural and artistic development of the town in the past. There are some important cultural institutions in town, which were all built in previous centuries. Slovenj Gradec is a birthplace of numerous artists, who live and work in other towns; however they still feel attached to their home town, where they have gained reputation with their unselfish and hard work. In this way they have helped to establish a reputation for the institution they work in, as well as to the town they live in. Music activity is important for the municipality and its cultural development. Music has been a very important part of Slovenj Gradec and its surroundings already in the past, and it is no different today. Educational system is very important as well. There are four central primary schools with their subsidiary schools in Slovenj Gradec. High education and higher education are also of great importance. Lately, the latter has been well developing, and thus also inviting students from other towns. Citizens of Slovenj Gradec are very proud of the town's international connections, and especially of its title the "Peace Messener City". 6 The research has shown that culture and art have always been present in this small town in Carinthia and they will remain present also in the future. UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI Date:___________________ I, _________________________________________________________, hereby submit this work as part of the requirements for the degree of: in: It is entitled: This work and its defense approved by: Chair: _______________________________ _______________________________ _______________________________ _______________________________ _______________________________ Hugo Wolf’s Penthesilea: An Analysis Using Criteria from his own Music Criticism A thesis submitted to the Division of Research and Advanced Studies of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC in the Division of Composition, Musicology, and Theory of the College-Conservatory of Music 2007 by Jennifer Ann Griswold-Nickel B.A., University of Cincinnati, 2003 Committee Chair: Dr. Mary Sue Morrow ABSTRACT Hugo Wolf’s music criticism in the Wiener Salonblatt (1884–1887) was published while he was actively composing his own symphonic poem Penthesilea, based on the play by Heinrich von Kleist. This criticism, along with comments in his letters (1887–1897) to friend Melanie Köchert, reveals that Wolf placed a high regard on works exhibiting originality, proper orchestration, form and compositional technique. After briefly tracing the history of music criticism in late nineteenth-century Vienna, this thesis establishes Wolf’s compositional aesthetic derived from his critical opinions about instrumental music. A structural analysis of Wolf’s Penthesilea, his only complete programmatic instrumental work, concentrates on thematic material, form, and texture and orchestration and establishes the methods by which he composed his own music. A comparison of Wolf’s aesthetic criteria to his music shows that he adhered to his own compositional aesthetic in concept, but not always in execution.

Lee Doctor of Philosophy School of Music and Dance June 2014 Title: Patterns, Containment, and Meaning in Hugo Wolf’s Mörike-Lieder This dissertation focuses upon patterns and concepts of containment within selected Lieder from Hugo Wolf's Mörike collection. More specifically, I focus upon melody as a way of understanding how these found patterns and movements within melodic containers provide meaning. I focus on the melody for two reasons. First, my research here is the first to present such a detailed analysis of the melody. Second, the manuscripts of the Mörike-Lieder indicate that the melodic line was often an important referential point for Wolf. In my analysis, I focus upon six songs: “Der Knabe und das Immlein,” “Ein Stündlein wohl vor Tag,” “Frage und Antwort,” “Lebe wohl,” “An eine Äolsharfe,” and “Das verlassene Mägdlein.” Two central questions guide my analysis.
