An unexpected arrival was the BBC’s Bruce Parry. He is in the Amazon making a series with Indus Films, following the river from its source in the Peruvian Andes to its mouth. Cameraman Keith’s video camera simply dwarfed everyone else’s, as did the Indus crew of seven. Bruce was not here specifically to cover the Encontro Xingu, but such a unique gathering of Indians and rural people was an opportunity the team could not resist. They seemed bowled over by the sheer scale of the event, but confused about why the Brazilian Government had decided not to send any senior representatives to hear the Indians’ case. Online Appendix for Harald Hammarstr¨om& Mark Donohue (2014) Some Principles of the Use of Macro-Areas Language Dynamics & Change Harald Hammarstr¨om& Mark Donohue The following document lists the languages of the world and their as- signment to the macro-areas described in the main body of the paper as well as the WALS macro-area for languages featured in the WALS 2005 edi- tion. 7160 languages are included, which represent all languages for which we had coordinates available1. Every language is given with its ISO-639-3 code (if it has one) for proper identification. The mapping between WALS languages and ISO-codes was done by using the mapping downloadable from the 2011 online WALS edition2 (because a number of errors in the mapping were corrected for the 2011 edition). 38 WALS languages are not given an ISO-code in the 2011 mapping, 36 of these have been assigned their appropri- ate iso-code based on the sources the WALS lists for the respective language. This was not possible for Tasmanian (WALS-code: tsm) because the WALS mixes data from very different Tasmanian languages and for Kualan (WALS- code: kua) because no source is given. 17 WALS-languages were assigned ISO-codes which have subsequently been retired { these have been assigned their appropriate updated ISO-code. In many cases, a WALS-language is mapped to several ISO-codes. Modes of Dispossession of Indigenous Lands and Territories in Africa Elifuraha I. Laltaika1 and Kelly M. Askew2 I. Background and context3 The 2003 Report of Working Group on Indigenous Populations/Communities (WGIP) of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) recognized the existence of multiple indigenous peoples in Africa primarily consisting of pastoralists (e.g., Pokot, Maasai, Barbaig, Karamajong, Samburu, Turkana, Afar, Borana, Tuareg, and Fulani) and hunter-gatherers (e.g., Batwa, Hadzabe, Ogiek and San). These peoples require access to land and water resources in their ancestral territories to pursue their legally protected ways of life per the 2007 UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). However, powerful transnational corporations and conservation organizations—both typically aligned with local political and economic elites—were already identified in the 2003 WGIP report as a threat to indigenous lands, resources and livelihoods: Dispossession of land and natural resources is a major human rights problem for indigenous peoples. They have in so many cases been pushed out of their traditional areas to give way for the economic interests of other more dominant groups and to large scale development initiatives that tend to destroy their lives and cultures rather than improve their situation. Establishment of protected areas and national parks have impoverished indigenous pastoralist and hunter-gatherer communities, made them vulnerable and unable to cope with environmental uncertainty and in many cases even displaced them. Large-scale extraction of natural resources such as logging, mining, dam construction, oil drilling and pipeline construction have had very negative impacts on the livelihoods of indigenous pastoralist and hunter-gatherer communities in Africa. -

The Energy Crisis and the South American Pharaohs: Brazil’s Large Dams and the Social and Environmental Costs of Renewable Energy, 1973-1989 Dissertation Proposal Matthew P. Johnson (Georgetown)1 ABSTRACT: Brazil is the ideal model for studying the environmental controversies surrounding hydropower. A swell of large dams built by the military dictatorship sent Brazil into the top echelons of global hydropower producers. But these concrete leviathans also created a wealth of social and environmental problems that engendered the rise of an environmental lobby opposing further dam construction. My dissertation will look at the environmental controversies surrounding the four largest dams that Brazil’s military government built: Itaipu, Tucuruí, Sobradinho, and Balbina. My preliminary research suggests that pessimism among Brazilians towards hydropower resulted not from the inherent environmental costs but from the manner in which the dictatorship erected them. The exigencies of the 1973 energy crisis and the desire for immediate economic growth pushed the military dictatorship to plan grand hydroelectric projects that were at best expensive and at worse economically pointless, and to skimp on mitigating the social and environmental costs. Jenny Reddish1 LABRETS: PIERCING AND STRETCHING ON THE NORTHWEST COAST AND IN AMAZONIA Abstract This article examines the practice of piercing and stretching the lip in order to accommodate a labret in two regions: the North American Northwest Coast (with historical examples from Tlingit groups) and lowland South America (utilizing ethnographic writings on Suya and Kayapo communities). Drawing on the recent ‘sensorial turn’ within anthropology, I suggest an approach which goes beyond considerations of the symbolism of body ornaments and analyses how the infliction of pain they involve can be manipulated to serve processes of social maturation and instil values such as the importance of flamboyant oratory. Labrets are seen here as efficacious devices for producing different kinds of social bodies. Keywords: body ornaments; Northwest Coast; Suya; Kayapo; Tlingit; sensorial anthropology. ADORNOS LABIALES: PERFORACIÓN Y ESTIRAMIENTO EN LA COSTA NOROESTE Y EN LA AMAZONIA Resumen Este artículo examina la práctica de perforar y estirar el labio con el fin de acomodar un adorno labial en dos regiones: la Costa Noroeste de Norteamérica (con ejemplos históricos de los grupos tlingit) y las tierras bajas de Suramérica (utilizando etnografías de los suya y kayapó). Con base en el reciente “giro sensorial” en antropología, se propone una aproximación que va más allá de las consideraciones simbólicas de los ornamentos corporales y analiza cómo el dolor causado por esos ornamentos puede ser manipulado para servir a procesos de maduración social e impartir valores tales como la importancia de la oratoria fastuosa. Los adornos labiales son vistos aquí como artefactos eficaces para producir diferentes clases de cuerpos sociales. -

Introduction: the Upper-Xingu Carib language and its varieties The Carib subsystem of Upper Xingu consists of four local groups: the Kuikuro (four villages, with a fifth one being formed), the Matipu and Nahukwá (who live together in three villages), and the Kalapalo (two villages). All these groups speak a language which belongs to one of the two meridional branches of the Carib family (Meira & Franchetto 2005), and which nowadays presents two main varieties: one spoken by the Kuikuro and the younger Matipu generations, and the other spoken by the Kalapalo and the Nahukwá. Franchetto (2001) states that “we could establish a common origin of the Upper-Xingu Carib from which the first big division would have unfolded (Kalapalo/Nahukwá vs. Kuikuro/Matipu).” These two varieties distinguish themselves by lexical as well as rhythmic differences. According to Franchetto (2001: 133), “in the Carib subsystem of the Culuene river, the interplay between socio-political identities of the local groups (ótomo) is based on distinct rhythmic and prosodic structures”. Speakers express themselves metaphorically when talking about their linguistic identities. From a Kuikuro point of view (or 42 AMERINDIA n°35, 2011 from whom is judging the other) we get the assumption of speaking ‘straight’ (titage) as opposed to speaking as the Kalapalo/Nahukwá do, which is ‘in curves, bouncy, wavy’ (tühenkgegiko) or ‘backwards’ (inhukilü) (Franchetto 1986; Fausto, Franchetto & Heckenberger 2008). In any case, the idea of ‘straightness’ as a way of speaking reveals a value judgment with regard to what it is not. -

Waurá e Mehináku: um breve estudo comparativo (Waura and Mehinaku: a brief comparative study) Angel Corbera Mori1 1Departamento de Linguística-Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP) [email protected] Abstract: Mehinaku, Waura and Yawalapiti are the only languages of the Arawak linguistic family still spoken in the indigenous park of Xingu, State of Mato Grosso. The first observations and linguistic registries of these three languages were presented by Karl von den Steinen (1940 [1886]) in his classical book Between the aborigines of Central Brazil. In this work, Steinen says that the Arawak people of the Xingu divide themselves in two sub-groups: nu and aruak. “Nu is the predominant prefix in these tribes, it is the characteristic pronominal prefix of the first person; […] Mehinaku, Kustenau, Waura and Yaulapiti are Nu-Aruak” (p. 197). Steinen also stated that the Mehinaku and Waura formed a single ethnological unit and that they spoke the same language. Considering these primary observations, I present in this article a brief comparative study between Waura and Mehinaku languages.
