KRTY/San Jose’s Jamie Jackson: I had such an amazing time and I am incredibly grateful to have been given this opportunity. As a Rusty Walker Scholarship winner, we met the board members on Monday. They welcomed us and [said] we can look for them and ask questions any time we feel the need. What really impressed me was that while out and about at different sessions or hangs, a lot of them stopped me to ask how things were going. It was nice of them to take the time to do that. I enjoyed the smart speaker and streaming sessions. I also really enjoyed the Q&A with Jamie Brad Paisley – he has such a fun personality. Jackson One [limitation] I found in sessions was the lighting. It was pretty dark, which was fine I Can’t Feel My Face: CRS/Country Aircheck Awards label for the first day. But having activities every minute of the day into winners celebrate with the New Faces Of Country Music the late hours of the night (or early morning), and coming into Show performers Wednesday (2/7). Pictured (front, l-r) are that dark room for the first sessions of the day made it a little Mercury’s Lauren Alaina, River House/Columbia’s Luke hard to keep your eyes open, no matter how compelling the Combs, Big Machine’s Carly Pearce, Atlantic/WEA’s Michael information was. Ray;(middle, l-r) Capitol’s Bobby Young, MCA’s Katie Dean, Midland’s Cameron Duddy, Mark Wystrach and Jess Carson I saw and heard so much music in just a few days, with the and Sony’s Lauren Thomas; (back, l-r) Country Aircheck’s Sony show being my favorite. I love the guitar pull style. I also Lon Helton and Chuck Aly, Big Machine’s Brooke Diaz, and really enjoyed the New Faces Show. Lauren Alaina’s “Three” and Black River’s Mike Wilson, Rick Froio and Bill Macky. Michael Ray’s “Her World Or Mine” stood out. WIVK/Knoxville’s Nikki Thomas: In addition to the spectacular emceeing talents of Royce Risser, there were a lot of things I really enjoyed this year. This was my third or fourth New Faces Recap year for the Programming Mentoring Breakfast and once Big Machine’s Carly Pearce was “wined” by fellow artists in again, we had some super-talented people come through. her intro video while CRS attendees dined at Wednesday’s (2/7) It’s always exciting to hear their ideas and New Faces Of Country Music Show. Pearce answer their questions. I loved having kicked off the night with a set that included Cumulus’ Mary Berner at the event as a current single, “Hide The Wine” as well as speaker. She has such great presence and her debut chart topper, “Every Little Thing.” brings a wonderful energy into the room. Up next was Atlantic/WEA’s Michael Ray Her leadership and insight make her one with hits “Kiss You In The Morning” and of the best in the business. Randy Lane’s 10 “Think A Little Less,” plus a new song from Trends Impacting Morning Radio was also his upcoming album, “Her World Or Mine.” very intriguing. Radio is constantly evolving Big Machine’s Midland put their harmonies and growing and CRS is a great chance Nikki Thomas to good use on current single “Make A Little” and the trio’s debut No. 1, “Drinkin’ Carly to soak up so much information. • Midland Whitney Rose the White Buffalo
MIDLAND ON THE ROCKS BIG MACHINE Made up of singer Mark Wystrach, guitarist Jess Carson and bassist Cameron Duddy, Dripping Springs, TX trio Midland is the embodiment of ‘70s California country – all smooth Eagles harmonies and heart-on-your-sleeve lyrics. Midland – named from a Dwight Yoakam song – excel in setting a mood. This is music made for wide- open skies, endless deserts and wondering where the road is going to take you next. Their full-length debut, On The Rocks, features some of the most traditional- sounding country music to come out of Nashville in a decade. Lead single “Drinkin’ Problem” evokes Gary Stewart – one of Midland’s biggest inspirations, along with Merle Haggard. “Electric Rodeo,” with its plaintive piano, sweeping strings and high-in-the-saddle chorus, is a prime example of the “picture” the band loves to paint. And the majestic “Nothin’ New Under the Neon” sounds like vintage Eddie Rabbit. Midland’s music is truly a sound decades in the making that’s just right for today. WHITNEY ROSE RULE 62 SIX SHOOTER RECORDS This is turning out to be a busy year for Whitney Rose having released an EP in January, touring widely, and recording Rule 62, her third full album. With Rule 62, Whitney Rose further develops her luscious Texas swing sound with a more assertive feel. She sings ballads with a voice that takes you right back to the 1950’s or 60’s but others are a lot more direct and reflect a young artist not at all happy with contemporary issues.

  • Midland and the Barroom Weeper1
CARLO ROTELLA Boston College Email: [email protected] “I Come in Here So I Don’t Have to Hate Her” Midland and the Barroom Weeper1 Singing a barroom weeper is like writing a haiku about cherry blossoms or a Western about a laconic hero who cleans up a violent town. You’re under significant pressure to nail the obligatory elements of the form but you also have an opportunity to make fresh meanings by rearranging its familiar Lego pieces and taking advantage of a novel con- text. Whether you’re adding a song to the tradition or covering one that’s already in the tradition, you’re walking the line between getting it right and making it new. It’s a ques- tion of how creative you can get while working with, as the guys in Midland put it in their barroom weeper “Drinkin’ Problem,” “Same old folks, same old songs/Same old same old blue neon.” The barroom weeper is a country music warhorse in which a narrator with drink in hand and too many under the belt tells a story of yet another big night out that’s also a tale of woe. Sometimes this narrator is a woman—as in the case of Kitty Wells’s classic answer song “It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels”—but more typically the narrator is a man and he’s there because of a woman. Especially in the hands of the genre’s greatest exponents, Merle Haggard and George Jones, this lament wearing the mask of a bottoms-up anthem can explore complex psychological states: jaunty pique combined with despair, recrimination with forgiveness, bitter resentment with critical self-examination.
