New Vocal Group of the Year‘. Cody Simpson's third full-length album and frst for his very own Coast House Records, Free, signals the start of something new. In 2014, the Australian-born Los An- geles-based singer and songwriter found himself inde- pendent for the frst time as he thought this was the best path for him moving forward in his musical career. Tat independence invigorated and inspired a furry of creativity as well as an insatiable desire to collaborate where he ended up in a Malibu studio overlooking the ocean with producer Cisco Adler. Within hours, Cody realized he had met his “musical soul brother.” Tey immediately began working on what would become Free. Nodding to lifelong infuences as diverse as Bob Dylan, Jack Johnson, John Mayer, and Sublime, Cody cooked up a sun-kissed sound of his own driven by sandy acoustic guitars, steel drums, soaring solos, and unforgettable hooks. DJ Felix Jaehn was so inspired by her version of the classic R&B hit that he created a remix, which climbed charts internationally. Jaehn has called her “a talented and rising superstar.” Tompson’s crystalline vocals have also captured the attention of Avicii, Naughty Boy and Passenger.

  • Midland Whitney Rose the White Buffalo
MIDLAND ON THE ROCKS BIG MACHINE Made up of singer Mark Wystrach, guitarist Jess Carson and bassist Cameron Duddy, Dripping Springs, TX trio Midland is the embodiment of ‘70s California country – all smooth Eagles harmonies and heart-on-your-sleeve lyrics. Midland – named from a Dwight Yoakam song – excel in setting a mood. This is music made for wide- open skies, endless deserts and wondering where the road is going to take you next. Their full-length debut, On The Rocks, features some of the most traditional- sounding country music to come out of Nashville in a decade. Lead single “Drinkin’ Problem” evokes Gary Stewart – one of Midland’s biggest inspirations, along with Merle Haggard. “Electric Rodeo,” with its plaintive piano, sweeping strings and high-in-the-saddle chorus, is a prime example of the “picture” the band loves to paint. And the majestic “Nothin’ New Under the Neon” sounds like vintage Eddie Rabbit. Midland’s music is truly a sound decades in the making that’s just right for today. WHITNEY ROSE RULE 62 SIX SHOOTER RECORDS This is turning out to be a busy year for Whitney Rose having released an EP in January, touring widely, and recording Rule 62, her third full album. With Rule 62, Whitney Rose further develops her luscious Texas swing sound with a more assertive feel. She sings ballads with a voice that takes you right back to the 1950’s or 60’s but others are a lot more direct and reflect a young artist not at all happy with contemporary issues.

  • Midland and the Barroom Weeper1
CARLO ROTELLA Boston College Email: [email protected] “I Come in Here So I Don’t Have to Hate Her” Midland and the Barroom Weeper1 Singing a barroom weeper is like writing a haiku about cherry blossoms or a Western about a laconic hero who cleans up a violent town. You’re under significant pressure to nail the obligatory elements of the form but you also have an opportunity to make fresh meanings by rearranging its familiar Lego pieces and taking advantage of a novel con- text. Whether you’re adding a song to the tradition or covering one that’s already in the tradition, you’re walking the line between getting it right and making it new. It’s a ques- tion of how creative you can get while working with, as the guys in Midland put it in their barroom weeper “Drinkin’ Problem,” “Same old folks, same old songs/Same old same old blue neon.” The barroom weeper is a country music warhorse in which a narrator with drink in hand and too many under the belt tells a story of yet another big night out that’s also a tale of woe. Sometimes this narrator is a woman—as in the case of Kitty Wells’s classic answer song “It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels”—but more typically the narrator is a man and he’s there because of a woman. Especially in the hands of the genre’s greatest exponents, Merle Haggard and George Jones, this lament wearing the mask of a bottoms-up anthem can explore complex psychological states: jaunty pique combined with despair, recrimination with forgiveness, bitter resentment with critical self-examination.
