For his latest project, Robert Cray & Hi Rhythm, the blues Hall of Famer traveled to Memphis with his friend, renowned Grammy award-winning producer Steve Jordan, to make a classic soul album with Hi Rhythm, the band that helped create that sound. During the 90s the Cray band was featured in concert with artists like Clapton, The Stones, John Lee Hooker, BB King and Bonnie Raitt. Marc Cohn solidified his place as one of this generation’s most compelling singer-songwriters, combining the precision of a brilliant tunesmith with the passion of a great soul man after winning a Grammy for his soulful ballad “Walking in Memphis.” Rooted in the rich ground of American rhythm and blues, soul and gospel and possessed of a deft storyteller’s pen, he weaves vivid, detailed, often drawn-from-life tales that evoke some of our most universal human feelings: love, hope, faith, joy, heartbreak. The Blind Boys of Alabama have the rare distinction of being recognized around the world as both living legends and modern-day innovators. They are not just gospel singers borrowing from old traditions; the group helped to define those traditions in 20th century and almost single-handedly created a new gospel sound for the 21st. Since the original members first sang together as kids at the Alabama Institute for the Negro Blind in the late 1930s (including Jimmy Carter, who leads the group today), the band has persevered through seven decades to become one of the most recognized and decorated roots music groups in the world.

Beth Extreme – Millennium 069 493 165-2 1 12/01/1911:47 AM Extreme The Best Of Extreme 20th Century Masters The Millennium Collection (CD Folder) Played on Top 40 radio and at countless weddings in 1991, the acoustic ballad “More Than Words” hit #1, went gold, and put Extreme on the musical map. It also undoubtedly confused the hell out of some of the two million-plus people who bought Pornograffitti, looking for more of the same. Truth be told, Extreme is a funk-metal band that just happened to hit all the right chords with an uncharacteristic foray into unplugged territory, and to define them by a single, though memorable song does a disservice to their considerable accomplishments. Extreme’s members traveled in overlapping circles on the mid-’80s music scene in Boston. Vocalist Gary Cherone and drummer Paul Geary were in a band called Dream, while Nuno Bettencourt had gained a reputation as a guitar wizard in outfits like Myth and Sinful. Cherone met Bettencourt in the summer of ’85 and invited him to replace two imminently-departing axemen, and the two quickly became a formidable lyricist-composer team. The band’s self-created video for “Mutha (Don’t Wanna Go To School Today)” won an MTV Basement Tapes competition that fall, got into rotation, and upped label interest in the band.

    Corey's Top 10 2014 Concerts As 2014 comes to a close I post my top concerts for the year about to end. I Guess I Made It, (borrowing the great Poco tune title) barely. Unlike the past year I did get one nice CD, Belly of the Beast (more on that later) and I finally got around to digitizing my Magical Mystery Tour LP into iTunes. I continue to enjoy my self-created iTunes Radio station, aptly titled, A Good Feelin' To Know. I continue to program as it plays deep cuts that I would only hear on the WNEW_FM 102.7 station that helped me finetune my musical tastes (Thank you Mr. Fornatale.). Interestingly, family visitations hindered any show close to Poco or Richie Furay this year. 2015 perhaps? 1) I can certainly recall some great multi-acts shows but this year included some the best. Going back to the two 1976 Stills-Young Band shows opened by Poco preceding by a late winter '76 show that had Peter Frampton opening for the Faces, John Sebastian preceding “Fab Four” Poco then Loggins & Messina, and then The Outlaws opening followed by Poco and The Doobies Brothers, and finally Hendrix opening for The Monkees in 1967, I just cannot think of shows where the results of the pairing so matched the promise. It starts with Jackson Browne OPENING for John Fogerty at Jones Beach. Jackson mixed faves and deep cuts. My highlight was Runnin' On Empty. Interestingly for those who recall his original steel flavored version, Jackson arranged Take It Easy so that if Glenn Frey jumped out, he'd not miss a beat.
