Welcome to Neustadt A.D. Aisch WELCOME TO NEUSTADT A.D. AISCH http://www.überzaunundgrenze-nea.de Image: http://www.neustadt-aisch.de Greetings from Mayor Klaus Meier Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, Hardly anyone wants to leave his or her homeland – that is an undeniable fact. You have done just that, fled from your ancestral home, and most of you did so because you had good reason to fear for life and limb. You have come to us in hope of finding protection, peace, and personal freedom. We welcome you here! You face many new and sometimes unexpected challenges here. The most important thing for you to do first is to learn to speak and write our language. That is the only way for you to get your bearings in surroundings that are unfamiliar for you, it is the only way for you to connect with the people here, and it will help you to find a job more easily. It is also important for you to find your way around a new and unfamiliar culture, to get to know and understand our sometimes completely different lifestyle. It is important for you to be aware of how we live our daily lives and to learn how we can interact with one another in the right way. But we Germans have to learn that as well. Greetings from Mayor Klaus Meier This comprehensive guide created by our “Unterstützerkreis Asyl” (circle of supporters) is meant to provide as much support as possible so we can interact with one another without problems. It is a useful and wonderful aid. I thank all of those who have worked on it with great commitment, competence, and creativity. And I also thank all of the inhabitants of our city who have welcomed you with respect and warmth at the Asylcafé or other places in the wide network of helpers. Without their voluntary work, it would never have been possible to give you the good feeling of being welcome and to promote your integration as much as possible. Dear new fellow citizens, I know that despite the joy you feel about your successful escape, you face a difficult time with all the new people and circumstances here. I think you can best express your gratitude to the active voluntary helpers by being open and showing interest in us and our lives, but also by enthusiastically telling us a lot about yourselves and your lives. We can only build up mutual trust if we talk to each other and understand each other. Let us all work together - then we will achieve that goal! Cordially, Klaus Meier Mayor Neustadt an der Aisch CONTENT WELCOME IN NEUSTADT TALK 1. District Office (Landratsamt) 1. Small talk 2. Caritas 2. Symbols 3. Unterstützerkreis Asyl 3. Groceries 4. • Immigrants Called by Immigrants 1853 – 1865
IMMIGRANTS CALLED BY IMMIGRANTS 1853 – 1865 CHAPTER 13 A CALL HEARD IN BAVARIA Quite clearly, the participants had got their signals mixed. Mother Benedicta Bauer of Heilig Kreuz monastery assured the bishop of Regensburg,[1] Germany, their volunteers for an American mission would be perfectly safe because the Benedictine monk Dom Boniface Wimmer promised to provide for their spiritual welfare and assist them in their temporal affairs. On April 4, 1853, he had written that the sisters might start for America as soon as the arrangements could be made. He would receive them at St. Vincent's College in western Pennsylvania where they could study the English language. He, himself, "would attend to everything else."[2] With the missionaries already three days into their transatlantic journey, Dom Wimmer sounded an entirely different tune in a letter to his friend Abbot Gregory Scherr of Metten, Germany. "In the near future I shall have to go to New York again to meet Dominican Sisters that the Convent of the Holy Cross is sending me as a cross (as if I did not as yet have enough crosses)." He would have to displace his own people in order to house the nuns "until such a time that I can find a suitable place for them." Williamsburg, Brooklyn, was a possibility since it had a German pastor, Father Raffeiner, who was "disposed to take them." The monk wished he had never gotten mixed up in the project to begin with. He blamed Mother Benedicta, who "did not cease to beg me and so I agreed, or rather promised, to help as much as I could to find a place for them outside of our diocese."[3] Two letters, two well intentioned people, two very different versions of a German mission project that would eventually lead to twelve active congregations of Dominican women in the United States—"the Regensburg Tree." First, there would have to be a collision of the two plans on a dock in lower Manhattan, and once again, adjustment of a dream to the reality of where the real need existed.

Akademisches Auslandsamt/ International Office Getting from Munich Airport (Terminal 1) to Regensburg [If you arrive at Terminal 2 (Lufthansa, StarAlliance), follow the signs to Terminal 1. Then continue towards the “Z” area and follow the instructions below, starting with nr. 4.] 1. Once you have gotten your luggage & have passed through Customs, you will leave that area into a major concourse heading left & right. You will enter this concourse by going around a high Plexiglas wall. This long concourse has windows almost entirely along the far side from where you entered. 2. Information booths are available up & down this concourse. Look for stairs, or an escalator ramp, or an elevator down to the next lower lever. 3. Continue along this concourse toward the large Z (Zentralbereich, or Central Area) - this is an open area collection of shops, services, cafeterias, etc. The entrance-ways into the Zentralbereich go off down ramp at 45o angles. 4. Once in the Zentralbereich, you will find a cafeteria, restrooms, upscale shops, a blue & white Bavarian souvenir shop, money changing counters, and Die Bahn (German rail) counter. Buy your ticket to Regensburg here. Get a one-way ticket (Einfach nach Regensburg, nicht Zurűck) to Regensburg. Æ costs: approximately 20 Euros 5. You will first be taking a very short bus trip to the little town of Freising, and then taking the train from there to Regensburg. So, go outside to the bus turn-around lot next to the Zentralbereich and scope out which stop is for Freising/Regensburg. For years it has been the first one closest to the entrance doors, but check for yourself.

Coping with Crisis: Military Government Officials, U.S. Policy, and the Occupation of Bavaria, 1945-1949 By Copyright 2017 John D. Hess M.A., University of Kansas, 2013 B.S., Oklahoma State University, 2011 Submitted to the graduate degree program in the Department of History and the Graduate Faculty of the University of Kansas in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Chair: Adrian R. Lewis Theodore A. Wilson Sheyda Jahanbani Erik R. Scott Mariya Omelicheva Date Defended: 28 April 2017 The dissertation committee for John D. Hess certifies that this is the approved version of the following dissertation: Coping with Crisis: Military Government Officials, U.S. Policy, and the Occupation of Bavaria, 1945-1949 Chair: Adrian R. Lewis Date Approved: 28 April 2017 ii Abstract This dissertation explores the implementation of American policy in postwar Germany from the perspective of military government officers and other occupation officials in the Land of Bavaria. It addresses three main questions: How did American military government officials, as part of the institution of the Office of Military Government, Bavaria (OMGB), respond to the challenges of the occupation? How did these individuals interact with American policy towards defeated Germany? And, finally, how did the challenges of postwar Germany shape that relationship with American policy? To answer these questions, this project focuses on the actions of military government officers and officials within OMGB from 1945 through 1949. Operating from this perspective, this dissertation argues that American officials in Bavaria possessed a complicated, often contradictory, relationship with official policy towards postwar Germany.
