Santa Anita Opens, Headlines Worldwide Challenge Weekend Along With Belmont, Chantilly and Nakayama

The waiting is over. The time to separate the contenders from the pretenders for the 33rd Breeders’ Cup is here. The opening of in Arcadia, Calif., along with Belmont Park in Elmont, NY, Chantilly Racecourse in France and in , kicks off the first of two decisive Breeders’ Cup Challenge weekends, as no fewer than 11 “Win and You’re In” qualifiers will take place Saturday and Sunday, with 12 more lined up for next weekend. When the dust settles, nearly every one of the 13 Breeders’ Cup races will have defined fields, including the $6 million Classic, which will see the likely heavy favorite, , take center stage Saturday at Santa Anita in the $300,000 “Win and You’re In” Awesome (GI), which will award the seventh of eight automatic berths into this year’s race.

Run at 1 1/8 miles, the will be shown live (5:30-8:00 p.m. ET) on NBCSN as part of a “Breeders’ Cup Challenge Win and You’re In Series - presented by Lane’s End Farm and America’s Best Racing” telecast that will also feature Grade 1 Challenge races from Santa Anita and Belmont Park (see race previews below).

The Awesome Again figures to be another showcase California Chrome, who is owned in partnership by Perry Martin and Taylor Made Farm. The 5-year-old son of Lucky Pulpit has been scintillating while winning all five starts this year, which includes earning a Classic berth in a romp over Beholder in Del Mar’s “Win and You’re In” TVG Pacific Classic (GI) August 20 for trainer Art Sherman. California Chrome also won the Dubai World Cup (GI) at Meydan in March, which added to a resume that already counted victories in the and Preakness in 2014, and figures about 1-5 when he looks to add to his North American record of over $13.2 million in earnings and puts his 14-for-23 career record on the line in the Awesome Again.

With such an imposing favorite lined up, few are willing to take on California Chrome, though Kaleem Shah’s DORTMUND will give him another go. The 4-year-old son of Big Brown has taken on the favorite in his last two starts for trainer Bob Baffert, and second, beaten just a half-length in Del Mar’s San Diego (GII) in July though he was a modest third, beaten a decisive 7 ¼ lengths in the Pacific Classic. Dortmund, who won the Santa Anita Derby (GI) in 2015, is 8-for-12 lifetime.

Baffert will also start HOPPERTUNITY, who was third to California Chrome in the Dubai World Cup and fourth in the Pacific Classic, while graded stakes winners HARD ACES and POINT PIPER are possible for the Awesome Again, as is WIN THE SPACE.

Beholder- Rematch Highlights Four Challenge Races on Awesome Again Card

While California Chrome and the Awesome Again will garner the majority of the attention at Santa Anita, the undercard hardly takes a back seat, as the four additional Challenge races will award automatic starting berths into the Breeders’ Cup. The Zenyatta (Longines Distaff), Rodeo Drive (Filly & Mare Turf), FrontRunner (Sentient Jet Juvenile) and Chandelier (14 Hands Winery Juvenile Fillies) will all prove critical in advancing several contenders to the Breeders’ Cup, especially since three of the four will be held over the same distance as their respective Cup race.

The budding rivalry between Spendthrift Farm’s two-time Breeders’ Cup winner BEHOLDER and Hronis Racing’s champion 3-year-old filly STELLAR WIND will be renewed in the $300,000 Zenyatta (GI). Run at 1 1/16 miles, the Zenyatta has a match race feel to it, as dual Breeders’ Cup champion Beholder, a 6- year-old daughter of Henny Hughes who won the Juvenile Fillies over the track in 2012 and Distaff there in 2013 for trainer Richard Mandella, and Stellar Wind, a 4-year-old daughter of 2007 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner , who was second in the Distaff last year at for trainer John Sadler, cast a big shadow over the rest of their prospective rivals. The pair have met twice this year, with Beholder winning the Vanity (GI) at Santa Anita in June, and Stellar Wind turning the tables to take the “Win and You’re In” Clement Hirsch (GI) and earning a bid into the Distaff July 30 at Del Mar. Combined, Beholder, who is 17-for-24 lifetime, and Stellar Wind, who is 6-for-10 lifetime, are remarkable 16-for-18 at Santa Anita.

The presence of both Beholder and Stellar Wind is sure to keep the field size of the Zenyatta to a minimum, and only Stonestreet Stable’s TARA’S TANGO, a 4-year-old daughter of 1995 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Champion Unbridled’s Song who won the Santa Margarita (GI) over the track in March for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, is the only other confirmed starter.

The Rodeo Drive, run over the same course and 1 ¼-mile distance as the Filly & Mare Turf, figures to draw a large field, with Ramona Bass’ AVENGE the likely favorite for Mandella. The 4-year-old daughter of War Front has progressed through the ranks this year and moved her lifetime record to 5-for-11 when she won the John Mabee (GII) at Del Mar September 4.

Stablemate MAJESTIC HEAT could offer a stiff challenge off her win in the Solana Beach at Del Mar August 14, while FRENZIFIED, GENEROSIDADE, REAL SMART, SOBRADORA and ZIPESSA are also expected for the Rodeo Drive.

The $300,000 FrontRunner and Chandelier, both run at the same 1 1/16 miles that the Sentient Jet Juvenile and 14 Hands Winery Juvenile Fillies will be run, will likely have two heavy favorites for trainer Bob Baffert, with the majority of both fields testing two turns for the first time.

Kaleem Shah’s KLIMT will be tough to beat in the FrontRunner, as his decisive wins in Del Mar’s Best Pal (GII) in August and Futurity (GI) September 5 have left little doubt who California’s top 2-year-old is. The son of Quality Road is 3-for-4 lifetime and figures as an odds-on choice.

MIDNIGHT PLEASURE, a well-beaten third in the Futurity for trainer Shelbe Ruis and PLUM DANDY, who broke his maiden August 25 at Del Mar for Simon Callaghan, are also expected, while GORMLEY, OOPPER WALLAH, SILVER ASSAULT and STRAIGHT FLYER are possible for the FrontRunner.

The $300,000 Chandelier will showcase Ahmed Zayat’s homebred AMERICAN CLEOPATRA, a daughter of who is a full-sister to 2015 Triple Crown winner who won her debut at Del Mar in July then was second as the favorite in their Debutante (GI) September 3 for Baffert.

CHAMPAGNE ROOM, who was third in the Debutante for trainer Peter Eurton, will test the favorite again, while turf stakes winner WITH HONORS for Keith Desormeaux and impressive debut winner ZAPPERCAT for Richard Baltas, are also expected for the Chandelier.

Belmont’s Hirsch and Vosburgh to Offer Automatic Bids

While the majority of the “Win and You’re In” action at Belmont Park will be the following weekend, Saturday’s stakes laden card sees the $600,000 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic (GI) and $350,000 Vosburgh (GI), which will award automatic starting berths into the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf and TwinSpires Breeders’ Cup Sprint, respectively.

The Hirsch, run at 1 ½ miles, will likely have the heaviest favorite of all the Challenge races in Juddmonte Farm’s homebred FLINTSHIRE (GB), a 6-year-old son of Dansili (GB) who is undefeated and untested in three starts this year for trainer Chad Brown. The former globe-trotting group I winner began his career in Europe for trainer Andre Fabre and was second in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf at Santa Anita in 2014 before coming to Brown for a 2016 campaign. Flintshire hasn’t disappointed, winning Belmont’s Manhattan (GI) in June and Saratoga’s Bowling Green (GII) in July and their “Win and You’re In” Sword Dancer (GI) August 27, to secure a berth into the Turf and move his lifetime record to 8-for-22, with earnings over $8.8 million.

Flintshire’s stablemate, Klaravich Stable’s MONEY MULTIPLIER, who was second in the Sword Dancer as well as the local Man O’ War (GI) in May and “Win and You’re In” United Nations (GI) in July, will try again, as will TWILIGHT ECLIPSE and GRAND TITO, who were 3-4 in the Sword Dancer, respectively, while ECTOT is also expected for the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic.

The Vosburgh, run at six furlongs, will see Green Lantern Stable’s A.P. INDIAN try and further his status as the nation’s leading sprinter, as he goes for his fifth straight stakes win for trainer Arnaud Delacour. The 6-year-old son of Indian Charlie won the local Sprint Championship (GIII) in July, as well as Saratoga’s Alfred Vanderbilt (GI) in July and “Win and You’re In” Forego (GI) August 27 to secure a berth into the Sprint. A.P. Indian is 10-for-16 lifetime and a third straight grade I win would clearly send him to Santa Anita as the clubhouse leader for divisional honors.

Gary Hartunian’s X Y JET rates as the most intriguing potential upsetter, as the 4-year-old son of Kantharos was unbeatable in winning a trio of stakes starts at Gulfstream Park this for trainer Jorge Navarro, but has not been seen since running second as the favorite in the Dubai Golden Shaheen (GI) at Meydan in Dubai March 26. Graded stakes winner HOLY BOSS and JOKING will also challenge, as will stakes winners REQUITE and WEEKEND HIDEAWAY, while FAVORITE TALE and STALLWALKIN’ DUDE are possible for the Vosburgh.

Belmont will also host the $400,000 Beldame (GI) at 1 1/8 miles, which could have a direct impact on the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff, and will see grade I winner FOREVER UNBRIDLED as the likely favorite over a field that could also include GOING FOR BROKE, OFF THE TRACKS, PAOLA QUEEN, PENWITH, RACHEL’S TEMPER and TIGER RIDE, while the $300,000 Gallant Bloom (GII), run at six and a half furlongs, could prove a key prep for the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, as defending Sprint champion WAVELL AVENUE is expected to be part of a stellar field that could also include HOT CITY GAL, LUCY N ETHEL, PAULASSILVERLINING, QUEZON, STONETASTIC and WONDER GAL.

Chantilly Subs for Longchamp on Arc Day, Hosts Three Challenge Races

With Longchamp Racecourse outside of Paris under construction, Chantilly has been deemed to deputize this year and will therefore host Sunday’s loaded group I card that is highlighted by the historic $5.404 million Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (GI), which will bring together arguably the best field of turf horses assembled this year. The Arc headlines a card that includes six other group I races, three of which are “Win and You’re In” races for the Breeders’ Cup.

The Arc, run at 1 ½ miles, will be led by Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum , who is widely considered the best turf horse in the world. The 5-year-old son of (IRE) earned an automatic bid into the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf with a win in the “Win and You’re In” Juddmonte International (GI) at York August 17, which marked his sixth straight score. Postponed, who is 9-for-17 lifetime, was trained for the first 13 starts of his career by before being sent to Roger Varian for a 2016 campaign. This year he’s 4-for-4, including wins in the Dubai Sheema Classic (GI) at Meydan in Dubai in March and (GI) at Epsom in June over Arc rival (IRE), who won the Turf last year at Keeneland. Postponed is trading as a solid 7-4 Arc favorite among European punters.

Coolmore and trainer Aidan O’Brien will likely have three for the Arc, with Found leading the way. The 4- year-old daughter of (GI) has had a frustrating campaign, having won just 1-of-7 starts, though she’s also been second in five group I’s in a row. (IRE), who earned a Longines Turf bid by winning the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (G1) in July, and ORDER OF ST GEORGE (IRE) make up the rest of the Coolmore-O’Brien threesome, with the former, who was second behind Postponed in the International, offering the best hope.

Japan’s MAKAHIKI (JPN), who won the local prep, the (GII) September 11 for trainer Yasuo Tomomichi is also attracting support for the Arc, as are (IRE), who won June’s (GI) and (GI) at The Curragh for trainer , FASCINATING ROCK (IRE), (GB) and SILVERWAVE (FR).

The “Win and You’re In” action is led by the $432,353 Longines Prix de l’Opera (GI), which will award an automatic starting berth into the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf. Run at 1 ¼ miles, the Prix de l’Opera is expected to include Lord Lloyd Webber’s SO MI DAR (GB), who is undefeated in four starts for trainer . The 3-year-old daughter of Dubawi (IRE) won the (GIII) at York in May and returned September 14 to win a listed stakes at Yarmouth. (GB), who won the (GI) August 21 at Deauville for trainer James Fanshawe is also expected, as is BOCCA BACIATA (IRE) and QUEEN’S TRUST (GB).

Spots in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, respectively, will be on the line in the $378,309 Prix Jean Luc Lagardere (GI) and $324,265 Prix Marcel Boussac (GI). Both races, run at 1-mile, figure flush with talented runners from Coolmore and O’Brien, as well as Al Shaqab Racing, Godolphin and Juddmonte Farm.

The most intriguing of the Prix Marcel Boussac entries, however, could be Andrew-James Smith’s undefeated TOULIFAUT (IRE), who is scheduled to be sold Saturday at the Arqana Arc Sale. The daughter of the immortal (GB), who is off to a rousing start as a first-year sire, is perfect in three starts for trainer Jean-Claude Rouget, including a win in the Prix d’Aumale (GIII) over the local course September 8 and figures to have a new set of silks when she enters the starting gate Sunday.

In addition to the three Challenge races, Chantilly will also host the seven-furlong $324,265 Prix de la Foret (GI), which has traditionally been a key prep for the Breeders’ Cup Mile, as well as the five-furlong $378,309 Prix de l’Abbaye (GI), which could send a few runners to the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, as well as the $324,265 Prix Du Cadran (GI), run at the marathon distance of about 2 ½ miles.

Nakayama to Offer Turf Sprint Bid

The “Win and You’re In” action spans the globe to Japan Sunday, when the $1.764 million (GI) will offer an automatic berth into the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint. Run at about six furlongs, the Sprinters figures to draw a deep and competitive field and couples with the February Stakes (GI), run at a 1-mile February 21 at and the (GI), run at 1-mile on the turf June 5 at Tokyo, to form a trio of Challenge races from Japan. The February, won by Moanin, offered the first of eight automatic berths into the Breeders’ Cup Classic, while the Kinen, won by Logotype (JPN), offered a berth into the Breeders’ Cup Mile.

News and Notes

Spain Burg and Best of Days Secure Juvenile Turf Bids at Newmarket

Roberto Cocheteux Tierno’s BURG (FR) and Godolphin’s BEST OF DAYS (GB), earned spots in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf, respectively, with wins in the $147,000 Shadwell (GII) September 23 and $147,000 Juddmonte Royal Lodge (GII) September 24 at Newmarket.

Spain Burg, a 2-year-old daughter of Sageburg (IRE), won for the fourth time in five starts for trainer Xavier Thomas-Demaulte, and added to a resume that also includes a win in the listed Ventes Osarus August 3 at La Teste De Buch Racecourse. Best of Days, a 2-year-old son of Azamour (IRE), won his first stakes after running second in the Acomb (GIII) at York August 23 and is now 2-for-3 for trainer Hugo Palmer, who indicated he will likely give his colt the rest of the year off and prepare for next year’s European classics.

Cougar Mountain Could be Pointed to Mile

Coolmore’s COUGAR MOUTAIN (IRE), who won Newmarket’s Joel (GII) September 23, could have his sights set on Santa Anita and the Breeders’ Cup Mile later this fall. Trained by Aidan O’Brien, the 5-year- old son of (AUS) snapped a seven-race losing streak in the Joel, dating back to a win in the Desmond (GIII) at Leopardstown in August 2015.

Cougar Mountain, who is now 3-for-18 lifetime, could run next in the Queen Elizabeth II (GI) at Ascot October 15, but with the prospect of a turf course with plenty of give to it, he could be rerouted to America. “We might have a look at the Queen Elizabeth II on Champions Day, if the ground was going to be in any way lively,” Coolmore’ United Kingdom representative Kevin Buckley said. “Alternatively, we could look at going over to Santa Anita for the Breeders’ Cup Mile.”

Melatonin Breezes for Classic

Tarabilla Farm’s MELATONIN, unraced since earning an automatic berth into the Breeders’ Cup Classic with his win in the “Win and You’re In” Gold Cup at Santa Anita (GI) June 25, is beginning final preparations for the race. The 5-year-old son of Kodiak Kowboy, trained by David Hofmans, who won the 1996 Classic at Woodbine with , also won the (GI) in March, was given a rest after his Gold Cup win, then battled some minor foot issues, which forced him to miss Saturday’s “Win and You’re In” Awesome Again (GI, see race preview above) at Santa Anita. Melatonin, who is 5-for-13 lifetime, returned to the worktab September 16 and impressed his trained after a 5-furlong breeze in 1:02 September 21 at Santa Anita.

“He did it nice and easy. We’re pointing to the Breeders’ Cup Classic. He seems to like the track. It’s in very good condition,” Hofmans said. “We backed off training over the main track at Del Mar, and although we jogged him and galloped him on the training track, I lost enough time where I couldn’t make the Awesome Again. He likes time between his races but this is a lot of time and the Awesome Again is a tough spot.”

MAJOR STAKES RECAP September 24-25

A review of the major global races in the corresponding Breeders’ Cup divisions from last week. Winning jockeys’ names are in parenthesis in each recap. The top Breeders’ Cup Points' leaders and Breeders’ Cup Challenge winners by division are listed at the end of each section. Breeders’ Cup Point earners are limited to horses who finish first, second or third in North American Graded Stakes races. Horses based outside of the U.S. or Canada who have not won a Breeders’ Cup Challenge race, are selected into World Championships races by the Breeders’ Cup Racing Directors/Secretaries Panel at the Pre-Entry stage, Oct. 24. Horses with an asterisk next to their names denote a foreign contender who has not won a Challenge race. A complete Breeders’ Cup Points list is available at: https://members.breederscup.com/championships/pointsleaderboard.aspx

Race: $1.32 million Pennsylvania Derby (GII), 3yos, 1 1/8 miles Track: Parx Racing Finishing Order: 1 – CONNECT, 2 – , 3 – WILD ABOUT DEB Margins: Half, 4, neck Also ran: MY MAN SAM, AWESOME SLEW, , , CUPID, SUMMER REVOLUTION, DISCREET LOVER, SUNNY RIDGE, HIT IT ONCE MORE Winning Owner: Paul Pompa; Trainer: Chad Brown; Jockey: Javier Castellano. Connections: Time: 1:50.20 (fast)

Countdown to the Breeders’ Cup Classic – Paul Pompa’s CONNECT (Javier Castellano) threw the 3- year-old division into even more disarray when he broke through for his first career graded stakes win with a half-length win over GUN RUNNER in a star-studded renewal of Parx Racing’s $1.32 million Pennsylvania Derby (GII). Chad Brown trained the winner, a son of 2007 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Curlin, who won a stakes named in his sire’s honor at Saratoga in July and bounced back after running sixth behind the remarkable performance by Arrogate in their Travers (GI) August 27. Connect is now 4- for-6 lifetime and could be a candidate for the Breeders’ Cup, Churchill Downs’ November 25 Clark (GI) or Aqueduct’s November 26 Mile (GI). “The Breeders' Cup will be considered but there are other races as well and other routes we can take with him,” Brown said. “He's definitely an exciting horse for the future." Winchell ’ Gun Runner continued a streak of running well in big 3-year-old races for trainer Steve Asmussen, as he won Fair Grounds’ Louisiana Derby (GII) in March and was third in the Kentucky Derby and Travers, and could be a candidate for the Las Vegas Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, a race his owner and trainer teamed to win at Santa Anita in 2012 with Tapizar. Paul Reddam’s Derby winner NYQUIST, and Big Chief Racing and Head of Plains Partner’s Preakness winner EXAGGERATOR, continued a frustrating late summer for their connections, as the former ran sixth after a perfect trip as the heavy 6-5 favorite for trainer Doug O’Neill, while the latter was a lackluster seventh for trainer Keith Desormeaux, further fueling speculation he needs an off-track to run his best race. Connections for both horses were undecided as where their next starts could be, though both indicated their horses came out of the race in good order. Exaggerator, also a son of Curlin, did earn a Classic berth win his win in slop in Monmouth Park’s “Win and You’re In” Haskell (GI) in July, but sandwiched that between 11th-place finishes in both the Belmont in June and Travers, which were both run on fast tracks. Pennsylvania Derby

Race: $400,000 Oklahoma Derby (GIII), 3yos, 1 1/8 miles Track: Remington Park Finishing Order: 1 – TEXAS CHROME, 2 – STICKSSTATELYDUDE, 3 – FISH TRAPPE ROAD Margins: Half, 3, neck Also ran: PASS THE BUCK, SECRET PASSAGE, SEEKING BLAME, SOLVE, WAY STRIKING, INSIDE STRAIGHT, READY INTAGLIO, READY DANCER Winning Owner: Keene Thoroughbreds; Trainer: J.R. Caldwell; Jockey: C J Connections: McMahon. Time: 1:48.94 (fast)

Countdown to the Breeders’ Cup Classic – Keene Thoroughbreds’ TEXAS CHROME (C J McMahon) closed late to reel in STICKSSTATELYDUDE and win his second straight graded stakes in Remington Park’s $400,000 Oklahoma Derby (GIII). The 3-year-old son of Grasshopper wheeled back on 15 days’ rest after winning the Super Derby (GIII) at Louisiana Downs September 10 for trainer R.J. Caldwell. Texas Chrome, who also won the Prelude at Louisiana Downs in August, is now 8-for-13 lifetime. Video: Oklahoma Derby

Race: $200,000 (GII), 3yos, 1 1/8 miles Track: Los Alamitos Race Course Finishing Order: 1 – ACCELERATE, 2 – SEMPER FORTIS, 3 – BLACKJACKCAT Margins: Head, 1 ½, 3 ½ Also ran: MISHEGAS, CURLIN ROAD, SUGAR BUZZ, CHRIS AND DAVE, ARIZONA MOON Winning Owner: Hronis Racing; Trainer: John Sadler; Jockey: Tyler Baze. Connections: Time: 1:48.48 (fast)

Countdown to the Breeders’ Cup Classic – Hronis Racing’s ACCELERATE (Tyler Baze) closed with a rush to nail SEMPER FORTIS by a head in the $200,000 Los Alamitos Derby (GII). John Sadler trained the winner, a 3-year-old son of Lookin at Lucky who entered off a win in Del Mar’s Shared Belief August 26. Accelerate is now 3-for-6 lifetime, but undefeated in his last three starts since stretching to two turns, though Sadler indicated both the Breeders’ Cup Classic and Breeders’ Cup Las Vegas Dirt Mile are not on Accelerate’s schedule. Race: $1.06 million Cotillion (GI), 3yo fillies, 1 1/16 miles Track: Parx Racing Finishing Order: 1 – , 2 – CARINA MIA, 3 – CATHRYN SOPHIA 5 ¾, 6 ¾, 2 ¾ Also ran: LAND OVER SEA, DISCO ROSE, QUEENA ESTHER Winning Owner: Fox Hill Farm; Trainer: Jerry Hollendorfer; Jockey: Mike Smith. Connections: Time: 1:44.02 (fast)

Countdown to the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff – Fox Hill Farm’s SONGBIRD (Mike Smith) added another grade I win to her ever-growing resume and legend with a frighteningly easy 5 ¾-length win over CARINA MIA in Parx Racing’s $1.06 Cotillion. The 3-year-old daughter of Medaglia d’Oro, who secured a 2-year-old filly championship with a win in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies in October at Keeneland, made it 11-for-11 lifetime for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer in the Cotillion, in what was undoubtedly thought to be the toughest test of her career prior to the race. Instead, Songbird, who summered in Saratoga and won the Coaching Club American Oaks (GI) over Carina Mia in July and the Alabama (GI) August 20, racked up another one-sided win and has now won her 11 career races by a combined 60 ½ lengths. Fox Hill owner Rick Porter, on-hand for the win, said his filly will not challenge males in the Breeders’ Cup Classic and take the predictable path and challenge Beholder and older fillies and mares in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff. “I thought this race fit in with the Breeders’ Cup, the timing is perfect, “Porter said. “I think Jerry and I agree the Distaff is the race to run her in. There’s some big cheese in that race, but that’s the fun of it–hook the big ones and hopefully beat ‘em.” Three Chimneys Farm’s Carina Mia once again ran well in defeat but is clearly no match for Songbird, though the daughter of Malibu Moon did stick a nose in front of the champion off the far turn in the Coaching Club for trainer Bill Mott. Carina Mia won Belmont Park’s one-turn Acorn (GI) in June and could be a candidate to cut back to six and a half furlongs for the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint. The disappointment in the Cotillion was Cash is King’s CATHRYN SOPHIA, who won the Kentucky Oaks (GI) at Churchill Downs in May for trainer John Servis and has long been considered the last, and possibly only, main threat to Songbird. Instead, the daughter of Street Boss, who owned a home court advantage with a 2-for-2 local record while facing Songbird for the first time, came under heavy pressure just to keep up with the winner entering the far turn and checked in third, some 12 ½ lengths behind, as the comfortable 5-2 second-choice. Plans for Cathryn Sophia are undecided, but the one-turn of the Filly & Mare Sprint would seem the obvious choice, should she try the Breeders’ Cup. Video: The Cotillion

DePaulo’s wife and assistant trainer Josie has said there’s always been one goal in mind. "He's a spectacular horse,” Josie DePaulo said. “We were thinking of skipping this race and heading straight to the Breeders' Cup, but he's such a good-feeling horse we thought we needed to get a race into him. Time: 1:11.92 (good)

Countdown to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf – Mrs. Evelyn Stockwell’s homebred BRAVE ANNA won what many European’s felt was one of the best renewals ever of Newmarket’s $264,600 Cheveley Park (GI) when she beat her Aidan O’Brien-trained stablemate ROLY POLY by a head, with Stonestreet Stable and George Bolton’s heavily favored LADY AURELIA in third. The 2-year-old daughter of War Front pulled off a 25-1 shocker and rebounded from consecutive sixth-place finishes in The Curragh’s Debutante (GII) in August and September 21 “Win and You’re In” Moyglare Stud (GI), which awarded an automatic starting berth into the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. Brave Anna, who won the Albany (GIII) at Royal Ascot in June, is now 3-for-6 lifetime, and, with full-brother HIT IT A BOMB having won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf last year for her owner and trainer, could look to add to the family tree at Santa Anita. “The Breeders’ Cup (Juvenile Fillies Turf) is a possible, but we’ll have to talk to Mrs Stockwell, who has had big faith in her all the time and said to run her here after the Moyglare,” O’Brien said. Lady Aurelia entered 3-for-3 for trainer Wesley Ward and showed her customary early speed as the 4-6 favorite, but tired late while suffering her first career defeat. The daughter of won her debut at Keeneland in April, then ventured to Royal Ascot to win the Queen Mary (GII) in June and entered off a win in the at Deauville (GI) August 21. Ward indicated that Lady Aurelia bled “with a score three out of five” in the race and will be given 90 days off at Stonestreet’s farm in Kentucky and point to 2017, with Royal Ascot’s Commonwealth Cup (GI) in June as her early season goal.
