He was a dual Gr.1 winner over 10 furlongs when winning the Tattersalls Gold Cup and the Champion Stakes, both times beating outstanding racemare Found. John O’Connor, Managing Director of Ballylinch Stud, commented: “Fascinating Rock was a top-class racehorse and he is the highest-rated horse Fastnet Rock has ever produced.” O’Connor went on to add, “This led to Maurice Regan of Newtown Anner Stud and ourselves giving him great support at stud with some real high quality mares. THURSDAY, 28 JANUARY 2016 RAMSAY: SHOW ME THE DRAMA FASCINATING ROCK HEADS Story and photos by Lucas Marquardt EURO CUP ENTRIES From access to jockeys' and stewards' rooms to employing new technologies like helmet cams, racing can and should do much more to shape a dramatic narrative for television viewers, according to Jim Ramsay, who spoke at the "Racing Media and the 21st Century Fan" panel during Wednesday's second session of the Asian Racing Conference in Mumbai. Ramsay is a director and producer, and has worked for IMG and Channel 4 Racing on such events as the Cheltenham Festival, the Grand National, the Epsom Derby and Royal Ascot. Ramsay's case was simple. Racing has a natural tension and excitement built into it, so why not take advantage of it and use it to create a better entertainment experience? By way of example, he reminded attendees of the 2001 G1 Cox Plate in Australia, which saw eventual winner Northerly (Aus), Sunline (NZ) and Viscount (Aus) finish in a blanket photo after a roughly run final 100 meters. • Development of a Welfare Index for Thoroughbred Racehorses
DEVELOPMENT OF A WELFARE INDEX FOR THOROUGHBRED RACEHORSES Alison Glen Mactaggart M. Qual. Psychology A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2015 School of Veterinary Science Abstract A uniform method capable of measuring animal welfare within the Thoroughbred Racing Industry (TBRI) does not exist. The aims of this study were to first investigate the importance of different welfare issues for Thoroughbred Racehorses (TBR) in Australia and then to incorporate them into a TBR welfare index (TRWI) that could be utilised in the industry. The second aim was assisted by the first, which utilised the expert opinion of stakeholders with in the TRWI, highlighting those aspects of husbandry requiring most improvement, and validated with behavioural measures. National and State Associations linked to racing were invited to send two delegates (experts) to a stakeholder meeting to determine key welfare issues, which they considered may have negative equine welfare implications. Following this a survey was created which posed vignettes of different combinations of welfare issues, which was subsequently presented to stakeholders around Australia. Fourteen key welfare issues were identified, each with two to four levels that were related to common husbandry practices. The 224 respondents identified the following welfare issues in declining order of importance: horsemanship > health and disease > education of the horse > track design and surface > ventilation > stabling > weaning > transport > nutrition > wastage > heat and humidity > whips > environment > gear. Further analysis of data tested the statistical significance of demographic factors, which determined that the respondents were relatively uniform in their answers. The TRWI which emerged from the responses could potentially be used to identify and improve welfare in training establishments.

  • Bulletin Book Extracts
Bulletin Book Extracts Continuity with the Dark Horses Annual … In my Dark Horses Guide I made out a case for Nichols Canyon, now the winner of seven of his 10 starts over hurdles. A genuine and classy performer for John Gosden on the Flat, with two Listed victories and a Group 3 placing to his name, he landed four Grade 1 races as a novice last season without getting the credit he deserved. This season he became the first horse to beat Faugheen, where the close proximity of Wicklow Brave in third suggests the favourite underperformed, before winning his sixth Grade 1 race when beating Identity Thief in the Ryanair Hurdle at Leopardstown over Christmas. Nichols Canyon ran the worst race of his career just under a month later when he trailed home 28 lengths third to Faugheen and Arctic Fire in the Irish Champion Hurdle, possibly feeling the effects of his tussle with Identity Thief in the heavy ground. Nichols Canyon’s greatest asset is his tenacity. He is not the sort of horse ever to win on the bridle, but he handles any ground and has strong winning form over two and a half miles – always an asset in the Champion Hurdle. Willie Mullins says the horse reminds him of Hurricane Fly – a great compliment - and there is a case for saying he has the best overall form in the race, even though the ratings suggest otherwise. Strong Opinions … I have no doubt that My Tent Or Yours is one of the most talented horses Nicky Henderson has ever trained.
