FRIDAY, JUNE 23, 2017 SCAT DADDY STARRING AT ROYAL ASCOT HORSES SAVING VETS, by Bill Oppenheim VETS SAVING HORSES After the first race at Royal Ascot Thursday, the five-furlong G2 Norfolk S. for 2-year-olds, Coolmore Ashford=s late great Scat Daddy had already chalked up three winners in the first 13 races--one a day, so far. Two were for 3-year-old fillies for trainer Wesley Ward: Lady Aurelia, whose second 5-furlong Royal Ascot win came in the G1 King=s Stand on Tuesday; followed by Wednesday=s last-race winner Con Te Partiro in the Listed Sandringham H. at a mile. In Thursday=s opener, Sioux Nation, trained by a certain Aidan O=Brien, became Scat Daddy=s fourth Royal Ascot 5-furlong 2-year-old Group winner, his fifth 2-year-old Group winner total, and marked the seventh win for Scat Daddy at Royal Ascot in five years. Five have been trained by Wesley Ward, two by O=Brien. In 2013, No Nay Never, from Scat Daddy=s third crop, won the Norfolk. Two years later, Acapulco won the G2 Queen Mary S. Last year Scat Daddy scored a 2-year-old double as Caravaggio won the G2 Coventry S. at six furlongs and Lady Aurelia became Scat Daddy=s second Sgt. Matt Ryba with retired Thoroughbred Crafty Star successive Queen Mary winner. • September Yearling Sale 75Th Annual
September Yearling Sale 75th Annual The Keeneland September Yearling Sale has evolved from humble beginnings to become the global marketplace for Thoroughbred yearlings. From 1944, the inaugural year, through 1948, the fall yearlings were sold in an auction which included broodmares, weanlings, stallions and horses of other ages. In 1949, approximately half of the yearlings were sold in a separate October sale and the remainder in a November mixed stock sale as usual. In 1950, the yearlings were sold separately by session, but in the same week as the other stock. In 1951, the fall yearling sales were set farther apart from the fall mixed stock sale, with the yearling auctions preceding the other sale by a week or more. In 1960, the yearling sales were moved to September. In 1981, the yearling sale was held in two four-day segments. Selected sessions were inaugurated in 1989. Coolmore’s M.V. They include headline acts such as Ribchester, Cracksman, Harry Angel, Order of St George, Churchill, The Tin Man, Barney Roy and Big Orange. Others still in the mix for the spectacular finale, which features four Group 1 races, a Group 2 and the richest mile handicap in Europe, are Caravaggio, Winter and Beat The Bank. HARRY ANGEL FLYING HIGH AMONG STAR CAST FOR SPRINT QIPCO British Champions Sprint Stakes (£600,000) Group 1 (Please quote the QIPCO British Champions Series if using any quotes) Harry Angel, currently rated the best sprinter in the world on official ratings, heads a superb cast of 25 still in the mix for the QIPCO British Champions Sprint Stakes. THURSDAY, 29 DECEMBER, 2016 PRELUDE TO A DOHA DERBY IMPRESSIVE USA FIGHTBACK by DaithR Harvey When the opportunity arose for a TDN writer to travel to Doha IN EUROPE IN 2016 to cover the Qatar International Derby Festival, there wasn=t much ruminating from this correspondent=s quarters to put his hand up for the task. Ok, so I was breaking a 20-plus year tradition of attending Leopardstown=s Christmas four-day jump racing extravaganza, but one should never spurn a chance to broaden one=s horizons, so I packed my bag for a whistle-stop maiden voyage to Doha. Al Rayyan Racecourse is part of a large equestrian complex that also plays host to other disciplines such as show-jumping, dressage and Arabian racing. The grandstand enclosure is compact and like most things in Qatar, it radiates a shiny, new feel. The sun was setting by the time the second race was under orders at 5 p.m. local time and as the flood lights kicked in, the crowd amused themselves without the all too familiar distractions of gambling and alcohol.
