PRELUDE TO A DOHA DERBY IMPRESSIVE USA FIGHTBACK by DaithR Harvey When the opportunity arose for a TDN writer to travel to Doha IN EUROPE IN 2016 to cover the Qatar International Derby Festival, there wasn=t much ruminating from this correspondent=s quarters to put his hand up for the task. Ok, so I was breaking a 20-plus year tradition of attending Leopardstown=s Christmas four-day jump racing extravaganza, but one should never spurn a chance to broaden one=s horizons, so I packed my bag for a whistle-stop maiden voyage to Doha. Al Rayyan Racecourse is part of a large equestrian complex that also plays host to other disciplines such as show-jumping, dressage and Arabian racing. The grandstand enclosure is compact and like most things in Qatar, it radiates a shiny, new feel. The sun was setting by the time the second race was under orders at 5 p.m. local time and as the flood lights kicked in, the crowd amused themselves without the all too familiar distractions of gambling and alcohol. Cont. p5 Tepin | Horsephotos by John Berry The is a hybrid breed of horse created, if that is IN TDN AMERICA TODAY the right word, in England, albeit partly from various breeds ‘BISCUITS’ A TRUE OVERACHIEVER whose roots lie around the eastern and south-eastern edges of Alan Carasso speaks with Chad Summers, part-owner of Monday’s the Mediterranean. However, that changed during the 20th century after so many high-class and influential stallions and mares had been sold from Europe to North America that Europeans had to bring American-bred horses to Europe if they were to win the best races. In 1929, after the horse had been at stud in England for just one season, Lord Derby leased 's G1 2000 Guineas-placed half-brother Sickle (GB) (Phalaris {GB}) to Joseph E. Widener of Elmendorf Stud in Kentucky (with an option to buy in three years' time for $100,000, an option which naturally was taken up when the time came). That deal eventually led to the production of Sickle's great-grandson , thence to Raise a Native and Mr. Prospector. In 1949, Nasrullah (Ire) ( {Ity}) was sold from Brownstown Stud in Ireland to Bull Hancock of Claiborne Farm in Kentucky for $370,000, a deal which massively upgraded the American thoroughbred, thanks largely to his sons Bold Ruler and . At the Tattersalls December Sale in Newmarket in 1952, E. P. Taylor of Windfields Farm in Canada bought 's great-great-granddaughter Lady Angela (GB) (Hyperion {GB}), in foal to Nearco (Ity) (Pharos {GB}). Impressive USA Fightback in Europe in 2016 Cont. from p1 The foal which she was carrying, Empire Day (GB) was born in England in 1953, after which she was bred back to Nearco and brought to Canada in-foal. Thus was bred the GB-conceived but Canadian-foaled who in turn sired and thus turned the bloodstock world on its head. A consequence of these and many other similar deals was that through the 1970s and '80s American horses were dominating Europe. However, a crucial decision was taken at the end of the 1984 racing season. During that campaign Vincent O'Brien had trained two top-class 3-year-old colts for Robert Sangster and the Coolmore team, both US-bred sons of Northern Dancer: and Sadler's Wells. There was more money to be made in the USA, so the more talented of the pair was dispatched to stud in Kentucky at a fee of $200,000, while Sadler's Wells took up residence at Coolmore in Ireland, covering for 125,000 Irish guineas. (Another pertinent factor in the plans might have been that El Gran Senor already had a full-brother standing at Coolmore at the time, ). El Gran Senor turned out to be a very good stallion, but a subfertile one, only siring small crops. Sadler's Wells, of course, turned out to be an all-time great, almost single-handedly raising the standard of horses bred in the British Isles so much that eventually European horsemen felt that they hardly needed to go to the States to buy horses at all. In 2016, though, the USA has been fighting back. This season in Lady Aurelia ended the season voted Cartier's Champion Europe has been notable for the extent of US-bred success in big 2-Year-Old Filly of Europe, notwithstanding that by that time she races. had lost her unbeaten record when favourite for her final start At Royal Ascot in June, arguably two performances stood out of the year, finishing third in the G1 Cheveley Park S. at among a plethora of Newmarket. No caste was lost for the American Thoroughbred superlative displays in that race, however, at it featured a US-bred trifecta, the two of galloping: the horses finishing ahead of Lady Aurelia being the Aidan victories of Tepin O'Brien-trained pair of War Front fillies and >TDN (Bernstein) in the G1 Rising Star= , previously winners, respectively, of the Queen Anne S. and G3 Albany S. at Royal Ascot and the G2 Duchess of Cambridge S. of >TDN Rising Star= at Newmarket. Each kept a winning race with a US-bred colt, having landed it in 2015 with that streak going with her mighty triumph, and in Tepin's case that season's champion 2-year-old Air Force Blue (War Front). This meant winning for the seventh consecutive time in a sequence impressive triumph was the highlight of a stellar unbeaten which already included three Grade I races headed by the 2015 campaign for Caravaggio, who had previously played a starring Breeders' Cup Mile. Royal Ascot in June had been Lady Aurelia and Caravaggio, while Newmarket's July Meeting had seen Roly Poly star among the fillies' ranks by taking the Duchess of Cambridge S. Equally impressive at the July Meeting had been the victory of Godolphin's US-bred colt Boynton (More Than Ready) in the G2 July S., a race in which he was chased home by his Ballydoyle-trained compatriot War Decree (War Front). At the end of the month War Decree went one better at Glorious Goodwood, taking the G2 Vintage S. in impressive style. Other good American-bred horses to take Pattern races in Europe during 2016 included Cannock Chase (Lemon Drop Kid), Royal Artillery (War Front), Syphax (Arch), Nemoralia (More Than Ready), Hathal (Speightstown), War Flag (War Front), Long Island Sound (War Front) and Intelligence Cross (War Front). Lancaster Bomber, though, ran a mighty race to finish Poulains winner The Gurkha (Ire) ( {Ire}) in a thrilling second behind Oscar Performance (Kitten's Joy), a performance finish. Hawkbill was not the only high-class son of Kitten's Joy which suggests that, like Caravaggio, War Decree, Brave Anna racing in Europe during the season: the Jean-Claude and Roly Poly, he and Intelligence Cross ought both to figure Rouget-trained colt Taareef enjoyed an excellent campaign in prominently in Aidan O'Brien's Classic plans for 2017. >BISCUITS= A TRUE OVERACHIEVER LUCKY 13 IN by Alan Carasso AMERICAN OAKS Managing a Thoroughbred is rarely straight-forward. Sure, you set some goals and devise a strategy to achieve those objectives, but more frequently than not, you have to dip into the bag for plans B, C and sometimes D. For the connections of Mind Your Biscuits (Posse), including Chad Summers, things really could not have gone much better over the last 16 months, and it all came together in the best possible way for the bloodstock agent/part- owner and his partners in Monday=s GI Malibu S. at Santa Anita. AThe day he breezed, it was the hottest day of the previews, and on the hot days, that track down there [at OBS] can heat up some,@ Summers explained. AThat day at that time, the times were slow. If you watched the breeze, it was a really nice video and I had a lot of New York trainers look at him and they all seemed to like him. He continued, ABut between the time [:10 3/5] and getting lost in the shuffle a bit being like 60 hips from the end of a five-day sale actually ended up working to our benefit. We were always going to protect him for a lot more than the $47,000 he RNAd for. I told the partners I wanted to keep him and run him and gave them the option and they decided they wanted to sell their piece. I was able to bring [Joaquin Guerrero=s] J Stable aboard at that time and we took him to the track straight from the sale.@ Armed with a horse they believed could take full advantage of the lucrative state-bred program in New York, Summers and his team sent Mind Your Biscuits to Saratoga and the colt validated their collective faith with runner-up efforts in his first two starts. It was after that second trip to the post that Summers admits he began to get excited. A[Jockey] Joel [Rosario] had breezed the horse for us a couple of times and told one of the gate crew going into the gate, >It=s going to take a freak or a monster to beat us,=@ Summers recollected. AAnd when he got to the gate for the next race he told them, >A Mind Your Biscuits being led in monster did beat us.= When he Benoit photo ran second in what became the fastest 2-year-old race of the meet [6 1/2 furlongs in 1:15.71]--open or otherwise--we thought that he could be a really nice horse.@ The winner that day was Championofthenile (Pioneerof the Nile), the $840,000 second highest-priced lot at the 2015 Fasig- Tipton Midlantic 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale. Third in the $206,000 New York Futurity--the colt=s major goal for 2015--and fourth to Governor Malibu (Malibu Moon) in a subsequent maiden, Mind Your Biscuits was given a six-month break and returned in 2016 with a pair of blowout wins against his fellow New York-breds around another stakes placing in the Mike Lee S. while now under the care of trainer Robert Falcone, Jr. With a couple of apparently softer options available, Summers and team opted for the most ambitious route, and it paid off with a decisive score in the GII Amsterdam S. at the Spa. AWe do a lot of homework and we know the competition and do our scouting,@ Summers explained. AThere was a New York- bred stakes that weekend and a two-other-than state-bred allowance that weekend, but we thought the Amsterdam was coming up a little light for what it was. That gave us the confidence to take a shot in there.@ Fifth to >TDN Rising Star= Drefong (Gio Ponti) in the GI King=s Bishop S., Mind Your Biscuits ran on nicely to fill out the exacta in the GIII Gallant Bob S. at Parx in September to arrive at yet another fork in the road. AOriginally we were going to give him a break after the Gallant Bob, but he came out of that race so good, so we said, >OK, we=ll run in the Breeders= Cup and then we=ll go to the farm,=@ Summers offered. Returned to New York following his bang-up third to Drefong in the GI Breeders= Cup Sprint for a group that now included Sol Kumin=s Head of Plains Partners and Michael Kisber, Mind Your Biscuits was still sending his ownership the right signals and Summers began to give serious consideration to the Malibu. ABefore the Breeders= Cup, he settled in to Santa Anita like he owned the place,@ he commented. AIf he would have won the Sprint, I think we would have stopped on him at that point, but we decided to take him home and keep his routine. He breezed super for Joel in New York and we=re like, >If he wants to go, we=ll go on with him,= and so that=s how we committed to it.@ Summers said that Mind Your Biscuits will remain in Southern California for the next week before returning to Miami. From there, connections will be faced with another choice, but one gets the sense it=s a problem he doesn=t really mind confronting. AHe was bouncing around the shedrow [Wednesday morning],@ the University of Kentucky graduate reported. AThe goal [for early 2017] was to go to the GI Met Mile, but we've been in talks with the representatives from Dubai and we'll seriously consider [the G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen Mar. 25]. He's scheduled to fly to Miami Jan. 3 and at that point, we'll decide whether we send him to Ocala and freshen him up for the Met Mile or we go on with him and point for Dubai. He added, AWe'd like to give him a break, but the horse is doing so super right now that he's almost telling us that he just wants to keep going. And the thing with him is that he just loves what he does. He loves to train, he loves to compete and you see that in his races. He's trying so hard in every one of his races. We kind of have this philosophy that we want to stop on them before they make us stop on them, but the horse could not have come out of the race any better.@ But in the interim--at a minimum--Summers is going to make sure to enjoy the euphoria of victory.

His shining moment as a handicapper came on May 8, 1981 when he swept the card at Belmont. AMy theory is, I pick every card like it=s May 8, 1981 at Belmont,@ he told me in that 2005 interview. Not only was Harris one of very few handicappers to pick against Spectacular Bid, he nailed the winner in Coastal. He never came to the track anymore, but I would hear from Harris often. Every other month or so he would call and take the time to tell me how much he enjoyed a story I had written or tell me how highly he thought of my work in general. His praise meant the world to me.
