  • The Ancient Harbor and Quarry of Cunill(I)Ere Or Palleo / Palormo (?)1
Colloquium Anatolicum 2019 / 18 The Ancient Harbor and Quarry of Cunill(i)ere or Palleo / Palormo (?)1 Oktay DUMANKAYA2 Keywords: Mysia, Ancient Harbor, Underwater Archaeology, Ancient Quarry, Byzantine Period This article focuses on the ancient harbor and quarry that we have identified on the coastal line of Şirinçavuş of Bandırma district. According to the fifteenth century portulans, the bathymetric maps and (Digital Elevation Model) 3D Modelings (Digital Terrain Model) of the harbor of Cunill(i)ere or Palleo/Palormo (?) ancient city were prepared. Bathymetric map revealed that the ancient harbor had lost its function over time. It has been identified that the stones extracted from the ancient quarry were used in Valens Aqueduct of İstanbul (364-378 AD), on the outer courtyard of the Sultan Ahmet Mosque, on the outer walls of the Dolmabahçe Palace, in the many monumental buildings in Istanbul, in Erdek Castle and in the Cyzicus Hadrian Temple. The ceramic fragments found during the surveys and the results obtained from archaeological surveys show that the ancient quarry was actively used from the Roman Period until the 19th century. Anahtar Kelimeler: Mysia, Antik Liman, Sualtı Arkeolojisi, Antik Taş Ocağı, Bizans Dönemi Bu makale, Bandırma ilçesi, Şirinçavuş mahallesinin sahil şeridinde yer alan antik liman ve taş oca- ğını konu edinmektedir. 15. yüzyıl portulanlarında Cunill(i)ere veya Palleo / Palormo (?) olduğu be- lirtilen antik kentin limanının batimetrik haritaları ve (Dijital Yükseklik Modeli) 3D Modellemeleri (Dijital Arazi Modeli) tamamlanmıştır. Batimetrik harita, antik limanın zamanla işlevini kaybettiği- ni ortaya koymaktadır. Limanın yakınlarında yer alan antik taş ocağından çıkarılan taşların İstanbul Valens Su Kemer’inde (MS 364-378), Sultan Ahmet Camii’nin dış avlusunda, Dolmabahçe Sarayı’nın dış duvarlarında, İstanbul, Erdek Kalesi ve Cyzicus Hadrian Tapınağı gibi birçok anıtsal yapıda kul- lanıldığı tespit edilmiştir.

“The Skeleton of the State:” The Fiscal Politics of Pergamon, 188-133 B.C.E. By Noah Kaye A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Ancient History and Mediterranean Archaeology University of California-Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Emily Mackil Professor Erich Gruen Professor Nikolaos Papazarkadas Professor Andrew Stewart Professor Dylan Sailor Fall 2012 Abstract “The Skeleton of the State:” the Fiscal Politics of Pergamon, 188-133, B.C.E. by Noah Kaye Doctor of Philosophy in Ancient History and Mediterranean Archaeology University of California, Berkeley Professor Emily Mackil, Chair In 188 B.C.E., a Roman commission awarded most of Anatolia (Asia Minor) to the Attalid dynasty, a modest fiefdom based in the city of Pergamon. Immediately, the Roman commissioners evacuated along with their force of arms. Enforcement of the settlement, known as the Treaty of Apameia, was left to local beneficiaries, chiefly the Attalids, but also the island republic of Rhodes. The extraction of revenues and the judicious redistribution of resources were both key to the extension of Attalid control over the new territory and the maintenance of the empire. This dissertation is a study of the forms of taxation and public benefaction that characterized the late Attalid kingdom, a multiscalar state comprised of many small communities, most prominent among them, ancient cities on the Greek model of the polis. It argues that the dynasty’s idiosyncratic choices about taxation and euergetism help explain the success of the Attalid imperial project. They aligned interests and created new collectivities.

The Pantomime Tiberius Iulius Apolaustus Slater, William J Greek, Roman and Byzantine Studies; Autumn 1995; 36, 3; ProQuest pg. 263 The Pantomime Tiberius Iulius Apolaustus William J. Slater HIS ARTIST is known 1 only from three inscriptions, which Louis Robert collected and emended in two articles. 2 The 11 inscriptions, which will be treated separately below, are all remarkably similar in format and record his victories and honors in many cities of Asia Minor and Greece in the last years of the second century. The name Apolaustus is common for pantomimes in Italy during the first and second centuries, and six are listed in Leppin's prosopography of the Italian per formers, some of whom came from the East.3 But our Apolaus tus never claims to have performed in the prestigious games of Italy, and none of the Italian artists of that name are recorded to have performed outside Italy. Otherwise only a lone reference to an Apolaustus in the fourth or fifth century is recorded in I The following will be cited by abbreviations or author's name alone: IAG=L. POLITICAL IN MEMORY AND AFTER THE PERSIAN EMPIRE At its height, the Persian Empire stretched from India to Libya, uniting the entire Near East under the rule of a single Great King for the rst time in history. Many groups in the area had long-lived traditions of indigenous kingship, but these were either abolished or adapted to t the new frame of universal Persian rule. is book explores the ways in which people from Rome, Egypt, Babylonia, Israel, and Iran interacted with kingship in the Persian Empire and how they remembered and reshaped their own indigenous traditions in response to these experiences. e contributors are Björn Anderson, Seth A. • Map 61 Ephesus Compiled by C
Map 61 Ephesus Compiled by C. Foss and G. Reger (islands), 1994 Introduction The continental part of the map comprises three distinct geographic regions: the coasts of Ionia and Caria, the Maeander valley, and the mountainous hinterland of Caria. The coastal region, settled by Greeks in their first great expansion in the Iron Age, became the site of major cities and many smaller settlements along its deeply indented coastline. The excavators of Ephesus and Miletus have long surveyed the regions of those cities, and other classical scholars have investigated the rest of Ionia. The Ionian coast has seen great physical changes since antiquity. The vast quantities of alluvium deposited by the R. Maeander have made the ancient port of Ephesus an inland town, and turned the former Gulf of Latmos near Miletus into a lake (inset and E2). The Carian coast, with its numerous small ports, is well known thanks to the researches of Bean and Fraser. The broad Maeander valley, which divides Ionia from Caria, always played a major role in the economy of the region with its fertility and the communication it provided between coast and interior. It has not been systematically surveyed. The river’s tributaries offered an outlet for the scattered settlements in the basins and plateaus of the heavily forested interior of Caria. Much of this region, as well as many parts of neighboring ones, was carefully explored by Louis Robert. The map omits Carian sites for which no Greek name is attested; for these, see Radt (1970). For unnamed village sites also not marked, see Marchese (1989, 147-54).
