Third Graders Perform the Musical “Fractured!”

On May 5, 2011, the third grade students at Northwestern Elementary premiered their fourth annual Spring Musical titled, “Fractured!” Each year third grade students perform a musical related to their science, social studies, and language arts curriculum. This year’s musical, concerning fractured fairy tales, was performed to coincide with general education class learning. Stories performed in “Fractured!” included: “The Boy Who Cried Wolf,” “The Pied Piper,” and “The Three Little Pigs.”

Not only did students have a chance to study fractured fairy tales in this musical, they also sang songs and acted out scenes concerning science and social studies curricula. They learned about our local solar system, simple machines, the water cycle, and Columbus, to name just a few. In addition to all of the general education topics, the students worked with Mr. Kirk and Mrs. Luca in art classes to create the AMAZING scenery seen in this show.

Thanks to the collaborative effort of all of the third grade teachers and specialists, the program opened to rave reviews. If you want to check out this great learning opportunity or simply want a night of entertainment, please join us next year on May 17, 2012 for an all new and exciting original show. We hope to see you there!

Spotlight On Achievement Page 8 Middle School Update on “Change for Change” Project

The 7th grade Visionaries Team has embraced, over the last two years, a humanitarian project that has connected us to a tiny village of abandoned women and children in Kenya and their champion, Hellen Nkuraiya, a government teacher with a salary of $285 per month. She founded the village, called the Village of Protection for Maasai Widows, as a protection against abandonment, abuse, and poverty. The ownership of a cow gives these women security and status.

Our staff became aware of the great needs of this village through our educational contact, Mrs. Terri Maclay, a volun- teer with the project. Terri has volunteered through her connections with a group of surgeons and their wives in the Harrisburg area.

The Visionaries students conducted a small change collection campaign called " Change Can Change " and created paper bead necklaces which they sold to teachers, parents and students. They researched the Maasai culture, en- joyed lectures, demonstrations, and art projects through regular visitations from Terri, who spent time at the vil- lage. One contact, Kiona Zappe, a former NWLMS student, made a generous donation and visited the class to pre- sent her story of college, world travel, and her current career in the military. For several years, the Visionaries have decorated a tree at the LV International Airport with the village theme. People from all over wrote to us as a result!

Mrs. Tritt received word that a woman from Lemoyne, PA was hosting a round trip visit for Hellen to come to visit them. Hellen said-"Only if I can stop by and see my students at Northwestern to THANK THEM PERSON- ALLY!" She spent one night at the Tritt house and was at the MS all day Monday. English is her third language and she owns no western clothing.

This year's 8th graders, who were our 7th graders last year during the “Change Can Change” campaign , raised $640 dollars. They presented her with a check during a first period presentation.

Our 9th graders raised almost $ 900 dollars as 7th graders, and were able to purchase two cows, several sheep and chickens! This group of 9th graders were also present at the presentation to receive Hellen’s gratitude.

At the high school, the students attend monthly programs to reinforce their skills in working with children and to support their own needs as active, involved teens. Male and female students in grades 9-12 participate in Friends for Life. This is a great volunteer opportunity for those considering a career in a helping profession.

Poetry Out Loud Competition features NWL Senior

NWL Senior James George was one of five young people to recite poetry at the Poetry Out Loud Competition at the Baum School of Art on February 10, 2011. James was chosen to participate in the Regional Finals sponsored by the Allentown Art Museum . James' poems were "A Super- market in California" by Allen Ginsberg, and "[i carry your heart with me (i carry it in]" by E.E. Cummings.

Students competing were from Northwestern Lehigh, Pleasant Valley, Liberty High, East Stroudsburg High School South and Stroudsburg High Schools. James did a great job in representing Northwestern Lehigh. It was a wonderful evening!

We would like to honor the contributions of Ms. Ann Way, Ms. Anna Gilgoff and Ms. Pam Reiss who spearheaded this program at the high school by recruiting students and judges for this event. Poetry Out Loud is presented by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Founda- tion, in partnership with the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and the Allentown Art Museum, the program encour- ages high school students to learn about poetry through memorization, performance and competition.

From Poetry Out Loud : "Recitation and performance are exciting current trends in poetry. There has been a resur- gence of poetry as an oral art form, as seen in the slam po- etry movement and the immense popularity of hip-hop mu- sic. Poetry Out Loud builds on that momentum by inviting the dynamic aspects of slam poetry, spoken word, and theater into the English class.

The National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foun- dation have partnered with state arts agencies of the United States to support Poetry Out Loud, which encour- ages the nation's youth to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation. This program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage."
