Hannah Herzon and Robert Leiser, both 5th graders from Weisenberg Elementary, were chosen to participate in the 2011 Pennsylvania Music Educators Association District 10 Elementary Band-fest. Andrew White, a 5th grader from Northwestern Elementary, was chosen to participate in the 2011 Pennsylvania Music Educators Association District 10 Elementary Band-fest. This festival gives gifted instrumentalists in 5th and 6th grade the opportunity to join together from 4 counties to perform a concert. Students are nominated to participate in this festival by their school instrumental director. Participating in this year's band- fest were approximately 120 students from 38 schools in Lehigh, Monroe, Northampton, and Pike counties. This event was hosted by East Penn School District on May 6, 2011. Students were able to meet many new people and share in a day filled with music. Students arrived at the school at 12 noon and spent the entire afternoon rehearsing under the direction of guest conductor Mr. Albert Neumeyer. The concert was performed at 7:00 PM. Mr. Billig and Miss Smith would like to extend their congratulations to these fine musicians for being chosen to participate in this great musical event ! GO TIGERS! Spotlight On Achievement Page 3 Northwestern Elementary Musical Third Graders Perform the Musical “Fractured!” On May 5, 2011, the third grade students at Northwestern Elementary premiered their fourth annual Spring Musical titled, “Fractured!” Each year third grade students perform a musical related to their science, social studies, and language arts curriculum. This year’s musical, concerning fractured fairy tales, was performed to coincide with general education class learning. Stories performed in “Fractured!” included: “The Boy Who Cried Wolf,” “The Pied Piper,” and “The Three Little Pigs.” Not only did students have a chance to study fractured fairy tales in this musical, they also sang songs and acted out scenes concerning science and social studies curricula. They learned about our local solar system, simple machines, the water cycle, and Columbus, to name just a few. In addition to all of the general education topics, the students worked with Mr. Kirk and Mrs. Luca in art classes to create the AMAZING scenery seen in this show. Thanks to the collaborative effort of all of the third grade teachers and specialists, the program opened to rave reviews. If you want to check out this great learning opportunity or simply want a night of entertainment, please join us next year on May 17, 2012 for an all new and exciting original show. We hope to see you there!
