DE SALES UNIVERSITY HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Program Overview The DeSales University High School Scholars Program enables high school students to take college courses for credit, tuition free, on the University campus. Highly talented and motivated students who are nominated by their high schools may take one day course during the regular fall and/or spring semester, on a space- available basis. This high school/university articulation program promotes communication and cooperation between basic and higher education while enriching and expanding the curriculum for students capable of completing college courses while still in high school.

Nominations Students are nominated by their high school guidance counselor, principal, or a screening committee designated at their school. Each participating school may nominate at most two students and two alternates per semester. DeSales University will endeavor to accommodate qualified applicants, but it cannot guarantee admission to the requested courses.

Application Application for admission to the DeSales University High School Scholars Program is made by means of the attached application form. After the student completes the front page, the nominator completes the reverse side. The student's guidance counselor or principal then forwards the completed application form and a copy of the student's high school transcript to Mr. Bill Burden at [email protected].

Applications for the Fall 2021 semester will be accepted until Friday, April 30, 2021. Participants will be notified of their acceptance and course registration status by Monday, May 31, 2021. The first day of class for Fall 2021 is August 25, 2021.

Selections The chairs of the departments offering the requested courses review the applications and recommend acceptance or denial to the Academic Affairs. A department chair may request a personal interview or telephone conversation with the student applicant. After reviewing the student's application and the chair's recommendation, Academic Affairs will notify the student and the nominator as to their decision.

Conditions Using the Course Selection Guide for High School Scholars and WebAdvisor, the student applicant designates their first three choices of courses on the attached application form. The choice of courses must be based on designated prerequisites as stated in the Undergraduate Catalog. The department chair determines the student's placement on the basis of the student's course request, course enrollments, and the student's background. Ordinarily the student will be limited to one course per semester.

The student will not be charged tuition but will be responsible for the cost of textbooks, laboratory fees, and other course materials, if applicable, and transportation. Participants will be expected to adhere to the attendance policy of the course, all applicable policies of the university, and the academic calendar, as outlined in the Undergraduate Catalog and individual course syllabi.

The course must be taken for a letter grade, not for pass/fail or audit. The University will send the student and his/her school principal an official transcript at the completion of the course. Additional transcripts will be provided through the DeSales University Registrar's Office following its usual policies. Students who wish to participate for an additional semester must reapply through their respective guidance offices. Application & Admission Deadlines

Applications for the Fall 2021 semester will be accepted until Friday, April 30, 2021. Participants will be notified of their acceptance and course registration status by Mon., May 31, 2021. The first day of class for Fall 2021 is August 25 2021.

Course Selection Guide for High School Scholars

As you review the complete list of course offerings for the upcoming semester on WebAdvisor, it is important to recognize that some courses will be more appropriate for a High School Scholar than others. The following guide is designed to help you with identifying preferred course options that are both interesting and appropriate.

GUIDELINES

When selecting preferred options from the list of course offerings, consider these guidelines:

1. Avoid 300-level and 400-level courses. Most of these courses are more advanced and have important pre-requisite course requirements that you would not meet at this time. 2. Avoid science courses with labs unless you have a flexible schedule. Most Biology (BI), Chemistry (CH), Physics (PH), and Sport & Exercise Physiology (SX) courses have a lengthy laboratory that does not fit well in high school schedules. 3. Aim for three-credit courses. One-credit courses meet much less frequently and will not give you the experience you are seeking, while four-credit and five-credit courses meet more frequently and will, therefore, be more difficult to fit into your schedule. 4. Pay careful attention to the course meeting dates and times, and select options that will not conflict with your high school schedule. (NOTE: M = Monday, T = Tuesday, W = Wednesday, R = Thursday, and F = Friday. Most three-credit courses meet either for 50 minutes on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays [MWF] or for 1 hour and 15 minutes on Tuesdays and Thursdays [TR].) 5. Before finalizing your list of preferred options on your application, review the course description to see if it sounds interesting to you. Our course descriptions are listed in alphabetical order by subject area in the Undergraduate Catalog at www.desales.edu/catalog.

These guidelines are not comprehensive; but, they should help you to make a more informed decision. Most importantly, when in doubt, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us for advice.

PROPERLY IDENTIFYING YOUR PREFERRED OPTIONS Because there could be multiple sections of a given course offered on different days of the week and at different times, it is important to check course availability and schedule details and using WebAdvisor at webadvisor.desales.edu.

On your application, be sure to include only the course preferences that fit within your high school class schedule. Please designate this clearly on your application by making certain to include the correct subject prefix (e.g., PL), correct number (e.g., 109), and correct section number (e.g., 04). For example:

Incorrect: PL 109 Incorrect: Philosophy 109: Philosophical Thinking Correct: PL-109-04

While every effort will be made to accommodate student preferences, we cannot guarantee that you will be able to be placed into one of your preferred options. If we are unable to accommodate any one of your three preferences, we will contact you by e-mail to discuss possible alternatives.

WebAdvisor User Guide for High School Scholars

HOW TO SEARCH FOR CLASSES

1. Go to WebAdvisor at desales.edu/webadvisor

2. Click Search for Classes

3. In the Term drop-down menu, choose 2021 Fall Day

4. Narrow your search criteria by choosing an option in the first Subject drop-down menu

5. Leave the remaining sections of the form blank and click submit at the bottom of the screen. A list of course sections being offered in the upcoming semester that fit the criteria (subject) you entered will be generated.

COURSE SECTION AVAILABILITY

To determine if a particular course section has a seat available for you, look to the fourth column from the right titled Available/Capacity. The course section availability will be displayed in the following format: X num. spots still available / X num. total spots in class / X num. students on waitlist.

For example: 19 / 20 / 0 means that there are 19 seats still available out of 20 total, with 0 students on a waitlist for the course.

SCHEDULING NOTES FOR 2021

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the need to maintain certain health and safety protocols on campus, some courses may be offered in a non-traditional format (i.e., hybrid, online “connected”/zoom rotation, etc.). As you search for and identify your course preferences, it is important that you take note of any special designations that may appear in the Comments column (second from the right).
