Eversley Primary School Newsletter 6 Eversley Primary School Newsletter 6 Email: [email protected] Website: www.eversley.enfield.sch.uk Black History Our curriculum continutes to be enriched with the Black History theme and this week Years 5, 3 and 2 gave wonderful presentations on the activities that they have carried out. Year 5 researched black scientistis and inventors; looking at their backrounds and what impact their inventions had on our society today. Year 3 looked into the biographies of sporting heros Usain Bolt and Mo Farrah. The children created some wonderful pieces of work in their English lessons about these legends. Year 2 enjoyed learning about the story of Anansi the spider and how he got his thin legs. The Anansi stories were first told by the Ashanti people from Ghana and retold through the generations. The children learnt about the importance of storytelling and oral culture to the Ashanti people. (Linda Lauder) COME AND CELEBRATE DIWALI WITH US: WHEN: FRIDAY 20TH OCTOBER TIME: 9am - 10.30am Infant Dining Hall At Eversley we are committed in engaging parents and giving them a voice in order to strengthen the relationship between staff and parents and in turn make Eversley an even better place for the children. As a step towards this commitment we are inviting parents to take lead in organising events that will bring our community closer. The first of these will be the celebration of Diwali and the Hindu New year. As a parent/carer you are invited to a coffee morning on Friday 20th Oct. 9-10.30am in the infant dining hall. Please come along, savour some Indian snacks, have some tea/coffee and celebrate Diwali with us; be part of the spirit of giving and sharing. This coffee morning will also be an opportunity to meet some key senior staff, school governors and learn about the different key roles. Representatives from EPSA will also be present. Diwali (or sometimes called Deepavali) is the "Festival of Lights. The festival is celebrated by lighting diva’s, decorating home fronts with ‘Rangoli’, dressing up, exchanging sweets and gifts with family and lighting fireworks to mark the start of the Hindu new year. The senior leadership team, members of the governing body and EPSA would like this to be the start of many cultural celebrations that we would like to promote and welcome parents to take a lead in sharing their culture, festivals and a way of bringing our Eversley community together. If you are unable to attend but wish to share your thoughts on this initiative and how you can get involved for future events please contact our parent governor Prafulla Pujara via the school office [email protected] and we will contact you to discuss your ideas further. Thank you and look forward to seeing you all on Friday 20th October 2017. Younger siblings welcome. Boys Extend Winning Run On Tuesday 10th October, the Eversley boys’ football team played their next two league games of the season at Southgate School. Up first were Salcombe Prep, who did well to hold off a number of early Eversley attacks. However, the break through soon came when Lucius was put through by Mete and he expertly finished past the Salcombe goalkeeper. After half-time, the boys were able to improve their build up play and were able to quickly counter after every Salcombe attack and it wasn’t long before two more goals from Lucius and Harry sealed an impressive 3-0 victory. In the second game, the boys played Vita et Pax and made a superb start as they managed to pick up where they left in their first game. Christopher was in blistering form as he sank four goals early on and another from Rishon gave the boys a resounding 5-0 lead at half time. After the restart, the boys continued to dominate and a tidy finish from Jack was soon followed by a seventh goal of the game as Calum got his name on the score sheet. The pick of the goals came when a sumptuous pass from Mete from defence was latched onto by Harry who coolly chipped over the keeper to leave the final score 8- 0 to Eversley. The boys should be very proud of what has been an excellent start to their season. • 6Th September 2016 Dear Year 5 Parents Re: Secondary Transfer I
6th September 2016 Dear Year 5 Parents Re: Secondary Transfer I know your child has only just started Year 5 but I wanted to write to you regarding Secondary School transfer, so that you are forewarned about what will be happening next year. You will need to apply for a place at secondary school for your child by October 2017. I will hold a meeting for Year 5 parents about this on Tuesday 16th May at 7pm and then again in early September to go through the application process. If you look on our school website (under the “Parents” tab) you will find the schools children have gone to in previous years. You will notice that there are lots of different schools that children go on to and not just one or two feeder schools. Every school has their own admissions criteria and these need to be studied carefully for each particular school’s requirements. Things to consider are what sort of school you would like your child to go to; a Catholic school, a mixed or single-sex school, a selective school etc. It is also important to consider the journey your child would need to do each day to get there and how easy or difficult that may be. You will be advised to always include the secondary school that you live closest to on your application form, so if you haven’t already done so, find out what that is. Catholic Schools require additional forms to be completed including a priest’s reference form which you will need to do this time next year (or during the summer term if you wish your daughter to apply for certain selective schools like St Michael’s).
