Recommendations OSG members are asked to note the information in this briefing and continue to promote involvement in the event within their borough and to providers 1. Background 1.1 WorldSkills London 2011 will be held on 5-8 October 2011 at ExCel London bringing together 1000 young people from over 50 nations to compete in 45 different skills areas ranging from creative arts and fashion to transportation and logistics. WorldSkills London is designed to engage and inspire young people by introducing them to a wide range of possible careers that they could pursue. 1.2 The event is primarily designed for secondary schools; however on the morning of 5 October there is a unique opportunity for London primary schools –a specially designated Junior WorldSkills exclusively for Year 5 and 6 pupils. The morning will include ‘have-a-go’ activities designed for younger pupils in a safe but exciting environment. 1.3 London Councils is actively supportive of Worldskills London 2011 as it presents an outstanding opportunity to promote excellence in vocational skills and the chance for young Londoners to participate in a high profile and prestigious international event in the capital. 2. Recent Activity 2.1 YPES continues to be actively involved in the London Management Group and has recently been a member of the regional selection panels for ‘Have-a-Go’ and Showcasing and the national panel for Showcasing. London providers have been well-represented in the bids received and in the successful providers chosen. 2.2 Promotion of the event continues to be a priority both within Local Authorities at officer and member level and with all education providers. There are a range of opportunities for involvement, leading up to and at the actual event. Ten Ways to Get Involved provides further details. Registrations for the event have been strong, particularly for Junior Worldskills, although on-going promotion is encouraged. Additional support for the ‘One School, One Country’ initiative is requested of the host boroughs. Further promotion of volunteering opportunities is also sought and members are encouraged to think creatively about involvement in this aspect of the event. 3. School Participation 3.1 To 27 April 2011 around 250 schools in London have confirmed they will be attending or participating in WorldSkills London 2011; approximately 15,000 (of which 6388 have signed up to Junior Worldskills). A complete list of schools by borough is attached as Appendix A. 4. Recommendations 4.1 OSG members are asked to note the information in this briefing and continue to promote involvement in the event within their borough and to providers. It is clear from all we have done in undertaking this Commission that school improvement and raising educational outcomes, most particularly for young people in the secondary sector, are top priorities for the council, as indeed they must be for Lewisham itself. The establishment of an Education Commission underlines their importance to the council and seeks to accelerate change by bringing in an external team to work collaboratively with local stakeholders to shape a vision for education in Lewisham and make recommendations to the Mayor and to the community of schools in Lewisham for future development.

    Conisborough College Aspire, Believe, Succeed Conisborough College is an 11 – 16 comprehensive school in Catford situated in the London Borough of Lewisham. We are a diverse and inclusive community and within our school is one of the local authority’s resource base provisions for 36 ASD students aged 11 – 16. We are very proud of this acknowledged area of strength of the school and like all our students, these young people are fully integrated into our day to day routines and practices. The quality of this provision contributes to our local popularity as a school. It is an extremely exciting time to be working at Conisborough College. The school is undergoing a period of change as we define our future direction and expand our offer and provisions to our students. We are a truly comprehensive school striving to meet the needs and ambitions of all our students. We strongly believe that our local community deserves the best and we aim to deliver our commitment to the local community, some of whom work at the school.
