‘The Black Canvas'

Black History Month Art Exhibition By Students

Thursday 1st – Saturday 31st October 2015 9.00am-5.00pm daily

The Dugdale Centre, Thomas Hardy House, 39 Road, Enfield, EN2 6DS

The talented art pupils from Winchmore School were commissioned by Enfield Borough Council to create an exhibition for Black History Month 2015. This exhibition will remain in place at The Dugdale Centre in Enfield throughout October.

The theme is ‘The Black Canvas’ and students responded by celebrating strong black figures in society and recreating works by contemporary black artists, which led to some exciting personal responses.

The exhibition was opened by the Mayor of Enfield on Thursday 1st October along with students from the Expressive Arts Team at Winchmore School who showcased extracts from their school’s production of The Lion King.

RUDOLPH WALKER OBE VISIT 14 OCTOBER 2015

Rudolph Walker, currently cast as Patrick in EastEnders, visited Winchmore School to meet the young art students involved in BHM.

He had heard about our art exhibition at ‘The Dugdale Centre’ in Enfield. Rudolph was especially keen to meet Sofia Esposito, who created his portrait for the exhibition. When he met her he said “Wow, I am speechless. Why did you choose me?”, Sofia said Because“ you were the first black actor cast in a UK soap. You have done so much in your life, not just personally but you are also helping young people through The Rudolph Walker Foundation”.

We presented him with a framed print of his work which he said will be hung in his home. Rudolph took time to speak to each artist about their artwork, and gave the group an inspirational speech about reaching your dreams. Rudolph also said he will definitely be returning to Winchmore School in the near future, and is very keen to work with our Drama Department.

TEDDY BEAR PICNIC

On the 13th October Winchmore School played host to a number of our local students and their bears, as well as our own families and assorted soft toys, at a Teddy Bears Picnic organised by Ms Davies as a fundraiser for the main school production this year of the ‘Lion King’. We had a number of stall holders at the event as well as face painting, competitions and a picnic area.

Ms Dives taught our visitors some of the dances from the Lion King and we had some wonderful excerpt performances from our students. The music department along with a number of students encouraged our visitors to take part in some drumming lessons which added to the atmosphere.

The visitors to the event were also able to meet the characters from our production.

Yet another great event from our Expressive Arts team. JUNIOR GIRLS FOOTBALL vs CHASE

The junior team consisted of 8 Year 7 pupils and only 4 Year 9 pupils and were up against a strong Year 9 team from Chase School. The Winchmore team were led by captain Teiko Apafo who tried to help our very inexperienced team. The entire team gave their all. Nazife Dagli was in goal as team member Simrun Singh was not available neither was Melis Mehmet due to her committments with training for Arsenal, so Winchmore were severely weakened.

The back four consisting of Tanya Lancaster, Katie Anderson, Nayana Brathwaite and Sudenaz Savas all worked very hard. The midfield four Zara Kellner, Yasemin Hamit, Celeste Kellman and Jo Anne Chisvo also played well. The front two consisting of Teiko Apafo and Emilia Pacinella also tried hard and had opportunities to score. Sarah Kelly-King came on in the second half. Winchmore went down 0-10 but no player gave up and that makes me proud of the team says Miss Brazier

YEAR 9 MATCH AGAINST SOUTHGATE

It was a wet September afternoon and Winchmore School vs Southgate was a heated affair. Winchmore took the lead through a well-crafted team goal scored by Dior Teca. The lead was doubled before half time by Jamal Baptiste-Payne to make it 2-0 . Unfortunately a lapse in concentration allowed Southgate a half time goal from a short corner. Half Time, 2-1. Winchmore shot out of the blocks in the second half with another Dior Teca goal (3-1). However Southgate hit back with two goals of their own, due to a lack of midfield presence. 3-3. Three minutes added on. The same midfield that was dismantled for the second and third goals came back with a bang to outplay six Southgate players and play Jamal through. Instinctively, he toe poked the ball past the despairing keeper. Winchmore scored in injury time to secure the win.

It was a great team effort to rally in the last moments of the game and (in the words of Brendan Rodgers) they showed great character to battle to the end. Fantastic result on our first game and the team now look to build on a great result and prove that they are Enfield’s number 1 team.

Man of the Match Dior Teca

Report written by Paul Gialo - Mr Aourarh was proud of the team.

NETBALL

The Year 7 Netball team have recently played two matches. With excellent shooting from Emilia Pacinella and Cagla Sancar, they beat Heron Hall School 10-1, and sadly lost against 6-9, but again Emilia and Cagla shot well.

The Year 7 team members are: Tatyana Muzondo, Yolena Georgiou, Zara Kellman, Nellie Castara Nazife Dagli and Urisha Patel.

The team have a number of matches coming up and hopefully they will perform well. Training for Year 7s takes place on Mondays and Wednesdays after school with Miss Murphy. Anyone is welcome to join.

ENGLAND vs ESTONIA

This is Miss Brazier's 7th Winchmore School trip to see at Wembley. 49 pupils went on the trip. Miss Brazier was impressed with Year 7 Zara Kellner's poster that she made to spur England on. Many of the pupils had their face painted to show their support for England. All the pupils applauded Wayne Rooney when he was presented with his golden boot for 50 England goals and the record by any English player.

Miss Brazier's big England flag was seen on TV for the eagle eyed only...it was a question of knowing where the flag was placed.

All the pupils behaved well and had a great night under the lights of Wembley The next trip will be England v Malta on 8th October 2016 for the World Cup Qualifiers. Thank you to Mrs Tidmarsh, Mr Passey Miss James Miss Berry and Mrs O'Haire for giving up their Friday night to help with the trip. LEARNING COMMUNITY CROSS COUNTRY

While the sports hall and gym were unavailable due to exams, all Year 7 pupils took part in The Inter Learning Communities Cross Country. Here are the results of the running and some photos. All the pupils ran very well.

Phone : 020 8379 3745 Fax : 020 8379 3337 Date : September 2015 Dear Parents and Carers of Years 7-11,

Re: Fast-track to Attendance

In partnership with Enfield Education Welfare Service, Winchmore School will introduce the ‘Fast-track to Attendance’ scheme for parents who fail to ensure that their children attend school regularly. This is an essential part of the government’s drive to improve educational achievement and ensure that all parents fulfil their responsibility to ensure regular school attendance. This letter is being sent to all parents so that the responsible majority are aware of the action that will be taken with respect to parents whose children are missing school. It is also, of course, an opportunity for some to make improvements before becoming involved in the process.

If your child has good attendance (95% or above), then this process will not apply to you or your child, and you will be receiving this letter for information only. The following will then not apply to you:

Parents whose children are failing to attend school regularly without good reason can face prosecution within twelve weeks of being informed that improvements need to be made. This can lead to a maximum fine of £2,500, up to three months imprisonment and a criminal record. Alternatively, parents can be issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice of £60, rising to £120 if not paid within 21 days. This penalty is also applicable where parents take children on holiday without authorisation from their school’s head teacher and where there has been continued late arrival after the school register has closed. Another possible course of action is an application to the Family Court for an Education Supervision Order.

In the first instance, you may receive a letter advising you of your child’s overall attendance percentage and advising you to ensure that his/her attendance improves. If no improvement is seen in the following weeks, you will be offered an appointment to attend a formal meeting to discuss the matter. If there is still no sustained improvement, you will be invited to attend a Court Assessment Meeting, where a decision on legal action will be made. During the fast-track procedure, your child’s absences will remain unauthorised unless medical evidence is provided should your child be absent through illness.

What Can You Do To Help?

1. Ensure that you develop a routine that allows your child to get to school on time in the morning and ready for learning. 2. Make sure your child attends school each day and on time. 3. Praise your child when their attendance is good. 4. If your child is sick or prevented from attending for any unavoidable reason, contact the school on the first day of absence. You may be asked to allow your doctor to provide relevant details of your child’s medical records. 5. Speak to the school or Education Welfare Service if your child is reluctant to go to school for any reason. 6. Seek permission from the school, giving details, well in advance if there is an important matter requiring your child to be absent from school. 7. If you receive a letter, about your child’s attendance, do not ignore it. Failure to cooperate with the Education Welfare Service could result in the matter proceeding to the Magistrates’ Court more rapidly.

If you have any worries/concerns please do not hesitate to contact the Education Welfare Service on 0208 379 3745.

Yours sincerely

Sharon Clarke Operations Manager Enfield Education Welfare Service.

ATTENDANCE Parents and Carers – Important Information

The Government and Local Authority have made it a top priority for ALL children to attend school, every day and on time. The Government expects that your child attends at least 95% of the academic year. All absences must be explained and accounted for, and authorised by the school. If your child has excessive amounts of time off due to illness, we may ask you to provide medical evidence. Excessive amounts of unauthorised absence will lead to a referral to the Education Welfare Service.

You will have had a letter sent home with your child recently from Enfield Council. In partnership with Enfield Education Welfare Service, Winchmore School will introduce the ‘Fast-track to Attendance’ scheme for parents who fail to ensure that their children attend school regularly. You will be contacted again next term if this affects you.

What to do if your child is absent due to illness

• There is a facility to leave messages for the Attendance Office in and out of school hours (020 8360 7773 ext 111/112). Please state your child’s name, Form group and reason for absence. • We also have a text messaging service available (02031379628). Please note if using this facility to advise us of your child’s absence, you must be texting from the mobile number that the school has listed as your contact number. • You can also communicate via the school app. If you have a smartphone, both you and the school can save money when you download the 'School Gateway' app from your app store (Android or iPhone). Please see the school website for further details. • If you haven’t already spoken to us then you MUST send a note in with your child upon their return, which must be signed and dated by you. • If your child is going to be absent or late into school due to a medical appointment, you must advise us beforehand and your child will need to bring in their appointment card in order to authorise their absence.

Other absences

For any other absences, you must call the school to explain the circumstances and to obtain permission for your child’s absence. This includes weddings, sporting activities, visiting relatives, and religious festivals. Please note the Government has changed its ruling on holidays taken during term time and schools are under enormous pressure to reduce these absences. Leave is only granted in exceptional circumstances. Requests need to be made in writing to the Headteacher, Mr Jim Owen, at least two weeks beforehand. Should you decide to go without the Head’s permission, the absence will be unauthorised and will lead to a referral to the Education Welfare Service, which could result in you being issued with a Penalty Notice.

Can I also make you aware that leave taken for Religious observance is classed as an absence and will affect your child’s overall attendance. On a positive note, may I take this opportunity to congratulate all those students who are achieving expected levels of attendance and punctuality. There is a strong link between good attendance and academic progress and I am sure that this will help your child to fulfil their potential.

Ms Turner – Attendance Officer CONGRATULATIONS TO ARJETA HASMUJA

The following article appeared in the Enfield Independent recently, featuring Arjeta who graduated from Fashion BTEC at Winchmore School this summer. She worked really hard for several Saturdays, in addition to her other studies and we are so proud that her work was selected to appear in the catwalk show during London Fashion Week. We wish her every success in her Degree at Hertfordshire University.

A budding fashion designer said it was a “dream come true” as her work was showcased at London Fashion Week. Arjeta Hasmuja, beat off hundreds of designers to bring her work to life at one of the busiest weeks in the world of fashion. The competition, Fashion Futures, saw teenagers receive ten weeks of training before designing their own pieces. The 18-year-old, formerly of Winchmore School, was inspired by butterflies and old buildings from Japan and South Korea to make her dress.

“I was nervous, but more of an excited nervous” said the 18-year-old “it was an amazing ten weeks and to actually design my own work for London Fashion Week was a dream come true.”

The Hertfordshire University bound student said she was more nervous for her university interviews than the final catwalk as she took the competition in her stride.

“I took inspiration from the shapes of the building, it was hard work and I have never done anything like it before.” Speaking on her future, the student reading fashion said she has no dream job but just to be involved in the industry. She said: “As long as I am doing something in fashion, I am happy. I just love making and designing. It’s not something that runs in the family, but I love having something on paper and then making it a reality, you feel a sense of achievement.”

The 2015 Fashion Futures Final took place at Fashion Scout at the Freemasons’ Hall in Covent Garden on Tuesday September 22

BEAR GRYLLS SURVIVAL RACE

On the 3rd and 4th October twelve 6th form students from Winchmore School were invited to volunteer to help run the Bear Grylls Survival race at .

This opportunity was organised by Miss Steers in conjunction with ‘Age UK Enfield’; the 6th form sponsored charity. For every 6th form student who volunteered, ‘Age UK recieved a donation from the organisers of the event.

Students were assigned a range of activities to help out with on the day from registering people at the entrance, giving out water to the runners, to helping people complete the obstacles.Volunteers also had the opportunity to run a race. Bradley Harris and Callum Mota completed the 10k obstacle course. WINCHMORE SCHOOL’S PERU EXPEDITION 2015

This summer 13 students and Miss De Souza spent 4 weeks in Peru on our 2015 Expedition! As we departed on 23rd of July 2015 from Southgate station, it was hard to believe that our fundraising journey had begun 21 months ago and that we were ready to say goodbye.

During the trip we formed a composite group with two other schools: Strood & Studley High School. The trip got off to a slow start with a night layover at Heathrow in a luxury hotel but finally we arrived in Lima on 24th July next stop Arequipa, however, there was another flight problem. After another luxury hotel stop in Lima, we made it to Arequipa, a beautiful city with fantastic views of volcanoes and a very pretty central square.

On our expedition we visited many places, experienced the culture and did lots of voluntary work with local communities. The first camp was Camp Colca where we took part in the Peruvian Independence Day celebrations, dug foundations for a football pitch, built walls for a nursery and started preparing land for a school greenhouse. The Camp had breath-taking views of Colca Canyon and we saw lots of rare condors, the most famous birds of Peru.

Our next stop was the enormous Lake Titicaca and the Uros Islands. Camp Titicaca was built right on the Lake and we witnessed spectacular sunrises and sunsets. We visited the local school and taught the Peruvian children English as well as games like the hokey-cokey! We also made traditional mud bricks. Lastly, we had the privilege of experiencing a day on the floating reed islands before an overnight stay on Isla Taquile in tents and learning about Island traditions. After a seemingly endless 7 hour drive, we arrived at Camp Cusco in the Sacred Valley. This camp was created as a “culture camp” so we didn’t do project work but instead activities such as hiking, learning traditional Peruvian dancing and learning Quechua, the native Peruvian language led by the project leader Ricardo. We also got to make our own chocolate and clay tablets in mini-workshops.

Next we travelled a short distance up to the roof of the valley to Camp Moray, near the astounding Moray ruins. It was a very small and undeveloped village, full of animals and amazingly quiet except for the call to work tannoy at 6 in the morning! We soon got used to this though and began adjusting to the hard work every day. We did so much including building and rendering a school kitchen, digging compost sites, planting flowerbeds, painting school furniture, helping with the harvest and mixing cement. The views here were amazing because at night we could see the Milky Way and millions of stars, as well as thunderstorms over the mountains.

The last phase of our expedition was the 5 day Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu. It was a gruelling ordeal, through blizzards where we could hear distant avalanches and snow a foot deep, down through cloud forests and along train tracks in the rainforest where we saw parrots and enormous butterflies. Finally we reached Machu Picchu, which felt like an enormous achievement as the entire group had made it to the top and the sun had come out over the ruins. We even saw llamas! Overall the trip was fantastic and it’ll be really hard to forget for the rest of our lives – not that we’d ever want to!

The staff and students from Winchmore School, Strood Academy & Studley High School had such an amazing trip. Miss De Souza, Mr Lewis, Miss Cooper & our expedition leader Lynsey would like to thank all the students for being a fantastic group. Well done! Lydia, Molly, Lilly, Tommy, Dan, Matt, Asher, Aysen, Charlotte, Dena, Esen, Holly, Lucy, Luke, Callam, Max, Spencer, Ramsey and Sabina. SPEAKERS FOR SCHOOLS - CLIVE SHELDON QC

On the 14th October Clive Sheldon QC came into school to talk to students in Year 11 and our Sixth Form about a career in Law. He offered some excellent advice on how to get into Law and on degree choice and also gave some very interesting examples of the high profile cases in which he has been involved. Our students asked a number of questions during the Q and A session and feedback from staff and students was very positive. In his post event email Clive said ‘I very much enjoyed speaking to your students. They asked thoughtful questions, and were extremely polite.’ This was another good event made possible through the Speakers for School programme and we look forward to welcoming more impressive speakers into school through this scheme.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH - BRONZE AND SILVER AWARDS

This half term we have launched the Duke of Edinburgh Award to our Year 10 students and we have already received a number of requests to take part in the Award scheme. We are also delighted to say that we have also launched the Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award to our Year 12 students and also to the Year 11 students who completed the Bronze Award last year. It was felt that with the commitment necessary for GCSE exams it would not be wise to offer the Silver Award to all of Year 11 as the time necessary to complete this Award is much longer if a student has not already completed the Bronze Award. Again we have a number of students signed up for the Silver Award and we look forward to working with them to complete the necessary sections. Once again Mr Miller will be organising all the Expeditions.

EXPEDITION 2017 - ECUDOR AND THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS

The 19th October was another important date in the school calendar. During the evening event the students who had taken part in the Peru expedition this summer reported back on their experiences and showed some very interesting pictures and video footage. They gave an excellent account of their travels and the addition of some Peruvian outfits certainly added to the evening.

After a short break for refreshments we launched the 2017 expedition to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands. Once again we are organising this in conjunction with Camps International and a number of students have already shown interest in this trip. Impressively some have already started fundraising to cover their expedition costs.

Students at Winchmore School are offered some wonderful opportunities for travel and over the next two years we will see students travelling to Iceland, Spain, Ecuador and China amongst others. We could not offer many of these life changing opportunities without your support and hope you will continue to support our students at their many fundraising events over the next academic year.

BUSINESS LINKS

On the 3rd September local entrepreneur, Theo Lewis, organised a one day event at the Dugdale Centre to give a ‘Spotlight on Enfield Businesses’ as well as to promote the official launch of her GOT iit App.

Theo had been very impressed with the amount of work our school does in the local community and employed a number of our sixth form students to work at her event as she knew they would be reliable and present a professional image to the public.

Winchmore School also had a stand at the event to develop further business links and this proved very successful.

On 11 July 2015, 37 students and 5 members of staff left behind a beautiful sunny evening for a week of water sports activities in Spain. The journey by coach was long and hot, but the views were simply stunning. After 24 hours we arrived in L’Escala and had a well-deserved swim. During the evenings activities the game of Sherlock was also invented and the competition had well and truly started. We awoke the next day to an action packed day of activities such as wind-surfing, pool games & sailing. The cloudy skies and lack of wind meant that it was very challenging for those sailing and windsurfing. It did not stop us from diving all over the place and we all seemed to thoroughly enjoy the challenge of capsizing our sailboats. The hot sun soon arrived and the cool seawater provided light relief. We had a fun evening of beach games, Sherlock and witnessed a rich red sunset. The following day was the hottest day of the trip and it is said ‘the rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain’ and this was certainly true. There was not a cloud in the sky or any rain. We all took part in some exciting activities such as mountain biking, kayaking and snorkelling. The snorkelling made a lasting impression on us, with staff and students commenting on the natural habitat and great things we all saw. We also spent the day racing to the top of the view point and learning the basics of mountain biking. Although there were challenges and a few falls, we all dusted ourselves off, bounced back up and carried on. Afterwards there was time to relax by the pool, before heading up to the campsite to enjoy a BBQ dinner. At this point we all found the time flying past and were excited for what the last day had in store. The final day had arrived and the sun was scorching, we all made the most of all the activities and everyone pushed themselves to participate. Yet again we witnessed a wide range of funny dives and plenty of capsizes. Even though some of us tried to avoid getting wet, we all ended up soaked in the end. The afternoon activities were followed by some time down by the pool. We had a final evening of celebration and awarding of certificates, before the long drive home. Overall the trip was fantastic and we all had an amazing time, with lots of memories to share of our experiences.
