Improvement in Performance of a Downstream Barrage Due to a New Balancing Reservoir Upstream

Entire delta irrigation is catered by this structure. The flows of about 100 TMC from the catchment between Nagarjunasagar(NSP) a upstream reservoir and Prakasam barrage and regulated releases of 52.2 TMC are to be used for this project. A balancing reservoir at Pulichintala is constructed to utilise the intermediate yield effectively and to stabilise the irrigation under Krishna delta. This paper studies the improvement of Krishna delta system due to Pulichintala. The Integrated operation of NSP and Prakasam Barrage is done without Pulichintala considering the net inflows in to NSP after ultimate development and the demands planned under NSP and Prakasam Barrage using Mike basin and excel . The Pulichintala project is then introduced and the integrated operation of the three components are done. In both cases Standard Linear operation policy adopted. However in the 2ndscenario no releases are made to Prakasam Barrage from NSP if water is available at Pulichintala. The releases from Pulichintala in the 2ndscenario and releases from NSP in the first scenario to Prakasam Barrage are worked out considering the contributions from the respective intermediate catchments namely Pulichintala to Prakasam Barrage and NSP to Prakasam Barrage respectively. -

Version 2.0 Krishna Basin Preface Optimal management of water resources is the necessity of time in the wake of development and growing need of population of India. The National Water Policy of India (2002) recognizes that development and management of water resources need to be governed by national perspectives in order to develop and conserve the scarce water resources in an integrated and environmentally sound basis. The policy emphasizes the need for effective management of water resources by intensifying research efforts in use of remote sensing technology and developing an information system. In this reference a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on December 3, 2008 between the Central Water Commission (CWC) and National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to execute the project “Generation of Database and Implementation of Web enabled Water resources Information System in the Country” short named as India-WRIS WebGIS. India-WRIS WebGIS has been developed and is in public domain since December 2010 (www.india- wris.nrsc.gov.in). It provides a ‘Single Window solution’ for all water resources data and information in a standardized national GIS framework and allow users to search, access, visualize, understand and analyze comprehensive and contextual water resources data and information for planning, development and Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM). Basin is recognized as the ideal and practical unit of water resources management because it allows the holistic understanding of upstream-downstream hydrological interactions and solutions for management for all competing sectors of water demand. The practice of basin planning has developed due to the changing demands on river systems and the changing conditions of rivers by human interventions. -

Simhachalam* Department of Zoology & Aquaculture, Acharya Nagarjuna University, Nagarjuna Nagar - 522 510, A.P., India. *[email protected] Article Info Abstract Received: 02-03-2017, A study was conducted in River Krishna at Prakasam Barrage, Vijayawada with Revised: 29-03-2017, an objective to document the larvivorous fish fauna. Study revealed the Accepted: 30-03-2017 occurrence of 19 species of larvivorous fish from 5 orders, 10 families and 13 genera. Order cypriniformes was the most dominant group among the orders Keywords: followed by bagridae and channidae. Family cyprinidae belongs to the order Biological control, cypriniformes was the most dominant group with 7 species among the other Conservation. Integrated families. According to the IUCN (2016) red list of threatened species, 78.94 % vector control management of species are at least concern, 10.52% are at not assessed, 5.26% are near program, Larvivorous fish. threatened and for 5.26 % of species data is deficient. As per the CAMP report (1998), 17 species are at least concern, 1 species is at near threatened and for 1 species data is deficient. Out of 19 larvivorous fish, 9 species are commonly available in the River, 9 are abundant and 1 species is rarely available. 16 varieties of fishes are food fishes of which 10 species are cultivable augmenting multiple benefits for the stake holders.
