Flowering earlier than the other subspecies, (in March in my garden), this is a bushy shrub to 2m. The involucral bracts surrounding the bright yellow, terminal flower heads are strongly recurved unlike those of the other two subspecies. The leaves, as well, tend to5e more inwardljW%rving. Since our last Newsletter, I have been doing some reading on what I call the "new taxonomy" ie the use of new techniques such as cladistics and molecular analysis to assist with classification of plants. I can't say that I am any closer to understanding much of it but I am at least beginning to "get a handle on" how the new and old practices relate to each other. I have written a short piece later in the Newsletter with some further thoughts but as the professionals (botanists, biologists, taxonomists) are seemingly split on just how far to go with the new taxonomy, I doubt whether the issues raised with the proposed inclusion of Dryandra into Banksia will be sorted out any time soon. On this matter, I am very grateful to Dr. Kevin Thiele, Curator of the Western Australian Herbarium and co- author of the paper which formalized the proposed incorporation, for taking up the challenge of preparing an explanation in layperson's terns of the reasons behind their thinking and for so ably setting the background to much of the new way of looking at plant classification. -
5.3.1 Flora and Vegetation
Flora and fauna assessment for the Calingiri study area Prepared for Muchea to Wubin Integrated Project Team (Main Roads WA, Jacobs and Arup) 5.3 FIELD SURVEY 5.3.1 Flora and vegetation A total of 296 plant taxa (including subspecies and varieties) representing 154 genera and 55 families were recorded in the study area. This total is comprised of 244 (82.4%) native species and 52 (17.6%) introduced (weed) species, and included 60 annual, 223 perennial species, one species that is known to be either annual or perennial and 12 unknown life cycles (Appendix 8). The current survey recorded a similar number of species to previous flora surveys conducted along GNH and higher average diversity (average number of taxa per km) (Table 5-7). The dominant families recorded were also prominent in at least some of the previous flora surveys. Darwinia hortiorum (Myrtaceae: Chamelaucieae), a new species from the Darling Range, Western Australia. Nuytsia 20: 277–281 (2010). The distinctive, new, rare species Darwinia hortiorum is described, illustrated and discussed. Uniquely in the genus it has strongly curved- zygomorphic flowers with the sigmoid styles arranged so that they group towards the centre of the head-like inflorescences. Introduction Darwinia Rudge comprises c. 90 species, mostly from the south-west of Western Australia with c. 15 species in New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. Phylogenetic analyses (M. Barrett, unpublished) have shown that the genus is polyphyletic, with distinct eastern and western Australian clades. Along with the related genera Actinodium Schauer, Chamelaucium Desf., Homoranthus A.Cunn. ex Schauer and Pileanthus Labill., the Darwinia clades are nested in a paraphyletic Verticordia DC. Many undescribed species of Darwinia are known in Western Australia, and these are being progressively described (Rye 1983; Marchant & Keighery 1980; Marchant 1984; Keighery & Marchant 2002; Keighery 2009). A significant number of taxa in the genus are narrowly endemic or rare and are of high conservation significance. Although taxonomic reassignment of the Western Australian species of Darwinia may be required in the future, resolving the status of these undescribed species and describing them under their current genus helps provide information for conservation assessments and survey. -

Nicola Georgina Bergh Town Thesis presented for theCape Degree of DOCTOR OF ofPHILOSOPHY in the Department of Botany UNIVERSITY OF CAPE TOWN University May 2009 Town Cape of University ii ABSTRACT The Greater Cape Floristic Region (GCFR) houses a flora unique for its diversity and high endemicity. A large amount of the diversity is housed in just a few lineages, presumed to have radiated in the region. For many of these lineages there is no robust phylogenetic hypothesis of relationships, and few Cape plants have been examined for the spatial distribution of their population genetic variation. Such studies are especially relevant for the Cape where high rates of species diversification and the ongoing maintenance of species proliferation is hypothesised. Subtribe Relhaniinae of the daisy tribe Gnaphalieae is one such little-studied lineage. The taxonomic circumscription of this subtribe, the biogeography of its early diversification and its relationships to other members of the Gnaphalieae are elucidated by means of a dated phylogenetic hypothesis. Molecular DNA sequence data from both chloroplast and nuclear genomes are used to reconstruct evolutionary history using parsimony and Bayesian tools for phylogeny estimation. -
