This taxon wasaltered to subspecificrank by Thiele & Ladiges( 1994),but I now consider it specifically distinct from B. integrtfolie. Its leaf arrangement- spirally arrangedbut crowded - is readily recognizable through all growth stagesfrom the first seedling leaves. Whorled leaves characterizeall the plants that compriseB. integrifulia. B. aquilonia alsohas a unique row of short, stiffbrown hairseach side of the midrib on the abaxialleaf surface,and its follicles typically areslightly larger than those of B. integrifolia. The subspecies are distinguished as follows: sv.bsp.confertq has tessellatedbark, entire adult leaves, pubescent involucral bracts and pubescentapices to the common bracts;subsp. penicillqtq has! smoothbark, se ate leaves,villous involucral bracts and penicillate common bracts. George,i.e. non_ lignotuberous,tall, and openly branched,but the flowers are quite like those of B. paludosa ." being short and openly spacedin the conflorescence.The open spacingofthe flowers in the conflorescence 1scharactedstic of B. paLudosaand occurs in no other speciesof ser. saLicinae. There is also no difference from typical B. paLudosarn leaf and fruit morphology. It is geogmphicallydisjunct from typical B. paludosa, the nearestpopulation of the latter being c. 30 km away. George) Rye Discussion.Hopper (1989) describedB. seminuda subsp.remanens Hopper, distinguishingit from typrcalB. seminudaby its shorterstature, morefloriferous habitand usuallyshorter,less se ateleaves. Within the species,each of thesecharacters is variable to the extentthat there is no clear disiunction into infraspecific taxa, and the subspeciesis not acceptedhere. Flowering earlier than the other subspecies, (in March in my garden), this is a bushy shrub to 2m. The involucral bracts surrounding the bright yellow, terminal flower heads are strongly recurved unlike those of the other two subspecies. The leaves, as well, tend to5e more inwardljW%rving. Since our last Newsletter, I have been doing some reading on what I call the "new taxonomy" ie the use of new techniques such as cladistics and molecular analysis to assist with classification of plants. I can't say that I am any closer to understanding much of it but I am at least beginning to "get a handle on" how the new and old practices relate to each other. I have written a short piece later in the Newsletter with some further thoughts but as the professionals (botanists, biologists, taxonomists) are seemingly split on just how far to go with the new taxonomy, I doubt whether the issues raised with the proposed inclusion of Dryandra into Banksia will be sorted out any time soon. On this matter, I am very grateful to Dr. Kevin Thiele, Curator of the Western Australian Herbarium and co- author of the paper which formalized the proposed incorporation, for taking up the challenge of preparing an explanation in layperson's terns of the reasons behind their thinking and for so ably setting the background to much of the new way of looking at plant classification.

    NSW Threatened Species Scientific Committee Index to Final Determinations – 1996 –2018 (Updated to 27/4/2018) Listing of threatened species, populations and ecological communities in NSW from 1996 to 25th August 2017 was undertaken by the NSW Scientific Committee established under the Threatened Species Conservation Act, 1995. The extinction risk of species, populations and ecological communities were assessed at the State scale under this Act. However, it should be noted that assessments of species endemic to NSW (ie species that only occur in NSW) is equivalent to a national scale assessment. The NSW Threatened Species Scientific Committee (NSWTSSC) is established under the Biodiversity Conservation Act, 2016 which commenced on 25th August 2017. Under ths Act, species and ecological communities are assessed at the national scale. If a species or ecological community is not threatened at the national scale then it can be assessed at the State scale and can be listed as threatened if it meets the criteria for listing in NSW. The NSWTSSC identifies and assesses species and ecological communities for listing as threatened in the Schedules of the Act as follows: Schedule 1 – Critically endangered (CR), Endangered (E) and Vulnerable (V) species Schedule 2 – Critically endangered (CREEC), Endangered (EEC) and Vulnerable (VEC) ecological communities Schedule 3 – Extinct species (EX), species extinct in the wild and collapsed ecological communities Schedule 4 – Key threatening processes (KTP) Final determinations include the reasons for listing and are available for those entities listed or reviewed by the Committee since the Threatened Species Conservation Act, 1995 commenced in 1996.     State-wide seed conservation strategy for threatened species, threatened communities and biodiversity hotspots Project 033146a Final Report South Coast Natural Resource Management Inc. and Australian Government Natural Heritage Trust July 2008 Prepared by Anne Cochrane Threatened Flora Seed Centre Department of Environment and Conservation Western Australian Herbarium Kensington Western Australia 6983 Summary In 2005 the South Coast Natural Resource Management Inc. secured regional competitive component funding from the Australian Government’s Natural Heritage Trust for a three-year project for the Western Australian Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) to coordinate seed conservation activities for listed threatened species and ecological communities and for Commonwealth identified national biodiversity hotspots in Western Australia (Project 033146). This project implemented an integrated and consistent approach to collecting seeds of threatened and other flora across all regions in Western Australia. The project expanded existing seed conservation activities thereby contributing to Western Australian plant conservation and recovery programs. The primary goal of the project was to increase the level of protection of native flora by obtaining seeds for long term conservation of 300 species. The project was successful and 571 collections were made. The project achieved its goals by using existing skills, data, centralised seed banking facilities and international partnerships that the DEC’s Threatened Flora Seed Centre already had in place. In addition to storage of seeds at the Threatened Flora Seed Centre, 199 duplicate samples were dispatched under a global seed conservation partnership to the Millennium Seed Bank in the UK for further safe-keeping. Herbarium voucher specimens for each collection have been lodged with the State herbarium in Perth, Western Australia.
