Both belong to book clubs here at Glade and enjoy the sense of community living here affords. “It wasn’t always that way,” Bill recalls. “The addition of Stonehaven and Woodhaven communities has brought a wonderful influx of interesting people to Glade that wasn’t here before. The group is desig- nated for Glade members, but the POA purchased two nets for the tennis courts at Woodhaven for non-member Pickleball enthusiasts. The group plays year-round. In the winter, they play at the Leisure Center, and weather permitting (and preferentially), they play out- side at the Clubhouse Courts.

“Pickleball is a great workout without even realizing it,” says Vee. “It’s quick, fun, and a great way to meet new people. No matter what level you are, you can play. I have met so many new people playing Pickle- ball, and grown closer to those I have known for years,” she says.

The “offsides” area in Pickleball is called the Kitchen. This is an area close to the net and all along the length of the net. Don’t step in the kitchen to the ball unless the ball bounces in the kitchen. And when you step in, you had better step right back out!

Vee plays twice a week and is the unofficial organizer of the group. She sends out weekly reminder texts, and there are always plenty of people playing. Having lived here 35 years, she loves meeting extended families coming in for holidays and other occasions. The weekend before Christ- mas 2019, several showed up in their green and red gear to burn off some of the holiday festivities.

Pickleball equipment is very affordable, and hotel guests may check out paddles and balls from the fitness center or hotel. Needless to say, Pickle- ball is great fun, so if you’re ready to get in a pickle, just reach out to Vee at (304) 673-3739.

Two or four players use solid paddles made of wood or composite materials to hit a perforated polymer ball (basically, a Wiffle ball), over a net. The sport shares features of other racquet sports: the dimensions and layout of a badminton court, and a net and rules somewhat similar to tennis, with several modifications. Pickleball started during the summer of 1965 on Bainbridge Island, WA, at the home of Joel Pritchard, who later served in Congress and as lieutenant governor. He and two of his friends, Bill Bell and Barney McCallum, returned from golf and found their families bored one Saturday afternoon. With warmer weather arriving, it’s time to help our bodies make the switch and rev up our sluggish metabolisms, perhaps using some of these science-backed tips!

Eat lots of protein: Consuming plenty of protein with your meals can increase your metabolic rate by 15-30% and keeps us feeling fuller longer, thus quelling our urge to overeat.

Eat spicy foods: Many spicy foods contain a substance called cap- saicin, which heats up our bodies and has been shown to boost metabolism by up to 8%.

Move your body: Particularly, high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and weightlifting have been shown to increase metabolic rate most significantly, as these activities drive our bodies to continue burning calories even after the workout.

Get a good night’s sleep: Being sleep-deprived has been linked time and again to obesity. Lack of sleep increases blood sugar levels and insulin resistance, as well as the hunger hormone ghrelin.
