(VIRAMONTES, 1989, p. 33) x RESUMO O presente trabalho propõe uma leitura da temática do letramento e do trauma cultural no romance Under the Feet of Jesus (1995), da autora chicana Helena María Viramontes. Num primeiro momento, nosso estudo se concentra na especificidade de letramento que o romance retrata como força capaz de engendrar mudança social: o letramento completo, que ultrapassa a mera técnica de decodificar e codificar a escrita, despertando a consciência do indivíduo e impulsionando-o a ressignificar seu mundo. Analisamos o processo de aquisição dessa consciência via linguagem pela protagonista Estrella, discutindo também a importância das relações interpessoais para o desenvolvimento da sua agência. Em um segundo momento, traçamos um histórico da formação da etnia chicana a partir da anexação do Texas e da conquista do território mexicano pelos Estados Unidos, no séc. XIX, apontando os traumas presentes nessa história, desde então. Observamos como tais traumas adquirem uma dimensão cultural a partir do Renascimento Chicano impulsionado pelo Movimiento dos anos 1960. Embasados em conceituações teóricas do trauma cultural, discutimos como as personagens lidam com as experiências traumáticas e verificamos que somente Estrella, ao alcançar agência por meio do letramento, é capaz de ressignificar sua história. Concluímos que Estrella é o epítome de toda a etnia chicana e que a ressignificação do trauma que consegue empreender na história ficcional sinaliza a possibilidade e a necessidade de um novo revigoramento dessa comunidade étnica na história real, o que somente é possível por meio de um letramento que conduza a consciência à ação. Palavras-chave: literatura chicana, letramento, trauma cultural, consciência crítica, agência, ressignificação xi ABSTRACT The purpose of this thesis is to examine the themes of literacy and cultural trauma as they are portrayed in the novel Under the Feet of Jesus (1995), by the Chicana author Helena María Viramontes. Firstly, I focus my study on the specificity of literacy that the story portrays as a force capable of triggering social change, namely, complete literacy, which goes beyond the mere technique of decoding and coding script, since it awakens the individual's awareness and makes it possible for him or her to reframe the world. I carry out an analysis of the acquisition of critical awareness by the protagonist Estrella, and I also discuss the importance of interpersonal relationships for the development of her agency. Secondly, I present a succinct history of the formation

Rodríguez, Chair Professor Robert Dale Parker Associate Professor Susan Koshy Associate Professor Mimi Thi Nguyen Associate Professor Mary Pat Brady, Cornell University ii Abstract The myth of American travel and mobility has long shaped ideas of nation and national identity. In postwar cultural production, to move freely is to enact rights governed by U.S. citizenship. Mobility is thus an embodied social, cultural, and political exercise that informs the production of an ideal national subject. Yet, access to and participation in mobile practices is deeply fraught around issues of difference. This project therefore considers Latina engagement with the promise of travel and mobility, drawing attention to the limits of citizenship and complicating the homogenizing tendencies of Latino identity formation. While other scholars primarily focus on Latino mobility through the lens of subjugation and migrant labor, my analysis attends to generational cultural shifts and changing socio-economic conditions. Throughout the study, I focus on the work of Latina artists like Helena Maria Viramontes, Cristina Henríquez, Michele Serros, and Erika Lopez to show how Latinas adopt various modes of travel and mobility that refute fixity in order to forge cross-cultural affiliations on local and global scales. My work sees Latina movement not simply as reenacting U.S. mobility, but also as a complex raced and gendered action anchored in particular political and cultural realities.

    THE MEXICAN WORKER: A MARXIST READING OF LABOR STRUGGLES IN CALIFORNIAN CHICANO/A LITERATURE By Felix Medina Jr. A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Chicano/Latino Studies—Doctor of Philosophy 2017 ABSTRACT THE MEXICAN WORKER: A MARXIST READING OF LABOR STRUGGLES IN CALIFORNIAN CHICANO/A LITERATURE By Felix Medina Jr. The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the representation of labor struggles in Chicano/a literature, through a Marxist lens. This study examines how the Chicano/a literary works selected offer criticisms on the treatment of Mexican laborers within capitalism, and how these Chicano/a authors historicize the racialization and proletarianization of Mexicans within U.S. capitalism. Marxist theory allows to understand how Mexican bodies and their labor become (de)valued within capitalism depending on the needs of businessmen and the American government, thus becoming commodities themselves. The literary works discussed in this study cover the Chicano/a labor experience in California from 1965 to the late 1990s. Authors such as Luis Valdez, Helena María Viramontes, Francisco Jiménez, Cherríe Moraga, Alejandro Morales, and Luis Rodriguez offer unique perspectives on the Chicano/a labor experience through their characters. They show through their vivid descriptions of labor hardships, how society takes for granted the work that went into picking their fruits and vegetables. At other times, authors show how capitalism influences racial hierarchies and attitudes within the factory and the surrounding community. Through these labor themes, Chicano/a writers show how class and race intersect, thus shaping the Mexican worker’s experience.

    Latino And Latina Critical Theory: An Annotated Bibliography Jean Stefancict INTRODUCTION Latino/a critical scholarship, though largely ignored, has been around for a long time. One might say that its progenitor was Rodolfo Acufia, whose book Occupied America,' originally published in 1972, is now in its third edition. Acufila was the first scholar to reformulate American history to take account of U.S. colonization of land formerly held by Mexico and how this colonization affected Mexicans living in those territories. His thesis has proven as powerful for Latinos as the potent theories of Derrick Bell have been in understanding the dynam- ics of race for blacks.2 It took the Chicano movement of the 1960s and 1970s finally to force examination of American society from a Latino perspective. Farmworker strikes, high school walkouts, and the Chicano Mobilization movement brought the troubles of this community to national attention, even more than did the Zoot Suit riots and forced deportations earlier in the century.     TRANS CHOL@S, THE COLONIALITY OF GENDER, AND SEXUAL VIOLENCE in Helena María Viramontes’ Their Dogs Came with Them Araceli Esparza Abstract: This article argues that, alluding to more than five hundred years of colonialism in the Americas, Helena María Viramontes’ 2007 novel Their Dogs Came with Them simultaneously depicts and disrupts the coloniality of gender binaries. This argument is developed through a focus on Turtle, one of the novel’s complex protagonists, characterized as gender-bending, macha, malflora, trans, masculine, homeless, and a chol@.. The article traces the ways in which Turtle contradictorily represents the possibility of a decolonial gender subjectivity that exceeds the binary categories of modernity and participates in the production and reproduction of a hypermasculine and violent cholo masculinity. By opening the novel with an epigraph from Miguel León-Portilla’s The Broken Spears: The Aztec Account of the Conquest of Mexico, Viramontes positions her novel as part of a historical recovery project that focuses on the experiences and perspectives of the colonized.

The issues I would like to raise here are related to the Mexican heritage adopted by Chicana writers (particularly from the eighties on) in order to establish, assert and reframe their cultural roots. This they do by upholding their difference versus the dominant Anglo-American culture and by exploring their Mexicanness —as women— not only by recovering their heritage but by transforming and recreating it as well. It is by means of their acts of resistance and creativity through the written word that their singularity and specificity as Chicanas is established, a process that also entails the creation of models for future generations. The question here in approaching the Mexican-rooted heritage of Chicana writers is not so much whether there is, in fact, such a thing as a homogeneous, monolithic Mexican cultural identity —a huge question of utmost complexity that begs to be asked, but which is beyond the Bernice Zamora, quoted as an epigraph to "Introduction" in Tey Diana Rebolledo and Eliana S. Agribusiness in the United States is postulated in the three novels as an oppressive structure that creates barriers to socioeconomic mobility not only of Mexican immigrant agricultural workers and Mexican-American migrants but also for their future generations.
