In order to write a successful “talking animal” novel for a young adult audience, I had to revisit the classics of anthropomorphic fiction (my favorite genre as a child), study equine behavior, deepen my knowledge of the mustang controversy, a hot topic in the American West, and learn the natural history of Oregon’s dry side, where my book takes place. -

To Grad, From Dad Daniel John On Friendship When I was in the eighth grade, I told my mom and dad that “basically” I knew the basics of life. I knew how to read, write, do math, find things in a library, talk, clean up for myself, some basic cooking skills and the life skill of dialogue and discussion. You know, I was right. Everything that I have learned since the eighth grade has been a deeper and wider explanation of what I have learned. The problem is that the lessons of life get much more painful each time you have to learn…or relearn…one of them. As I look back over my life, I also realize that the best friends I ever had in many ways were my friends from the neighborhood and school in the eighth grade. My friends at this time knew me. Now, certainly this will be true the rest of my life…but I mean “knew me” in a much more basic way. They knew the color of my house, the mess of my bedroom, the names of all my siblings, what my dad did and the chores I was expected to do. They understood my family’s Christmas traditions and what we did on Thanksgiving because they usually spent some time with me on those days. They knew my teachers and my imitations of my teachers. They attended my church, St. Veronica’s, and we played before and after Mass. They traveled with me to games and functions. We played together, we prayed together. -

During this period, New Orleans’ vendors labored in the streets of diverse neighborhoods where they did more than sell a vital commodity. As “Nourishing Networks” demonstrates, the food economy provided the disenfranchised—people of color, women, and recent migrants—a means to connect themselves to the public culture of the city, despite legal prohibitions intended to keep them on the margins. Those who were legally marginalized exercised considerable influence over the city’s public culture, shaping both economic and social interactions among urban residents in the public sphere. -

Sweet Briar College Magazine – Spring 2019
Dear Sweet Briar alumnae and friends, Friendship and family have been on my mind lately, and so I want to tell you about some new friends I’ve been making this semester. One of them is Ray, who is tall and smart and also known as Love Z, and the other is Blues, who is very personable and a wonderful teacher. My friendship with Ray has grown over time; frankly, I didn’t seem to make much of an impression on him at first. My friendship with Blues blossomed immediately; we seem to be simpatico. As I joked with Merrilee “Mimi” Wroten, the director of Sweet Briar’s acclaimed riding program, maybe I bonded faster with Blues because he’s rather short, and so am I. And if you haven’t already figured it out, Ray, a chestnut warmblood, and Blues, a gray quarter horse, are members of the College’s equine family, and along with Mimi, they’ve been teaching me how to ride. As Sweet Briar’s president, it’s vital for me to learn as much as I can about the Col- lege, its programs and its people. That’s why I taught a course in our inaugural three- week session in the fall of 2018; that’s why I have just instituted collegial gatherings of faculty and staff every Monday evening (called Sweet Briar Hour); and that’s why I’m taking riding lessons, so that I can better understand our equestrian program, its ac- complishments and its needs. Riding also gives me a connection with many members of our Sweet Briar family; a full third of our students identify as riders, whether for competition or recreation. -

The articles and photos inside represent the unique cultural experiences enjoyed by AYA participants nationwide. New Orleans: Cruising Down the Mississippi By Emily Barberena Local Coordinator January 2010 Meridian, MS We spent the first weekend in December in New Orleans and we had a blast! We rode an old fashioned paddleboat (behind us in the picture) down the Mississippi River, walked through the Arts and French Quarter districts, ate beignets at “Cafe du Monde”, jambalaya, muffelatas, po’boys,(and much more!), walked the legendary Bourbon Street and saw many different kinds of regional music, like cajun, creole, jazz and blues, plus caught some bead in a haunted hotel (according to rumors-we are all fine!), shopped and necklaces from the balconies. We heard a jazz finished up with a trip to the Audobon Aquarium of the Americas and an and blues set at “Preservation Hall”, stayed IMAX film on Hurricane Katrina and the wetlands. China: A Host Parent’s Perspective We are the Stephenson-Skaff family living in Charleston, West Virginia. We started our adoption process in 2004 in anticipation of just having one child. Instantly we fell in love with the Chinese culture that has led us to adopting 2 additional daughters in December 2006 and April 2009. Our hearts led us to keeping the children’s heritage alive in their American life, so we have had the pleasure of hosting an exchange student from China, Wang BingYing through AYA. -

Countries Champion Wine” in recognition of our longtime judging director.
