By examining typical heat consumer profiles in Tunisia, the analysis compares three different solar thermal technologies that can be used to replace conventional heat supply technologies and lead to fossil fuel savings. Simulations for different geographical locations are compiled and then compared to economic boundary conditions. A comprehensive sensitivity analysis enables the evaluation of the effect of changes in framework conditions (such as changes in subsidy, technology costs, fuel prices) on the profitability of solar thermal systems. The study gives an overview of present market segments and provides guidance with regard to the economic feasibility of respective systems.

    THE MINI-COLUMBARIUM IN CARTHAGE’S YASMINA CEMETERY by CAITLIN CHIEN CLERKIN (Under the Direction of N. J. Norman) ABSTRACT The Mini-Columbarium in Carthage’s Roman-era Yasmina cemetery combines regional construction methods with a Roman architectural form to express the privileged status of its wealthy interred; this combination deploys monumental architectural language on a small scale. This late second or early third century C.E. tomb uses the very North African method of vaulting tubes, in development in this period, for an aggrandizing vaulted ceiling in a collective tomb type derived from the environs of Rome, the columbarium. The use of the columbarium type signals its patrons’ engagement with Roman mortuary trends—and so, with culture of the center of imperial power— to a viewer and imparts a sense of group membership to both interred and visitor. The type also, characteristically, provides an interior space for funerary ritual and commemoration, which both sets the Mini-Columbarium apart at Yasmina and facilitates normative Roman North African funerary ritual practice, albeit in a communal context. Genèse et évolution des sebkhas en contexte décrochant compressif et distensif Ali AMARI et Mourad BEDIR Résumé : Les études géologiques et les profils sismiques du Sahel centra/ de la Tunisie suggèrent que la genèse et Iëvolution des lagunes côtières et des sebkhas du Sahel centrai de la Tunisie ont été contrôlés par une tectonique décrochante compressive post-villafranchienne, suivie de mouvements distensifs décrochants d’âge tyrrhénien. La phase post-villafranchienne se caractérise par des plis de direction NE à EW qui sont associés à des décrochements compressifs EW La lagune côtière de Monastir et les sebkhas de Kelbia, Sidi El hani, Chérita et Moknine sont localisées dans les gouttières synclinales ou dans des structures anticlinales de la phase post-villafranchienne effondrées. Les sebkhas de Mahdia et d’El Jem par contre se situent dans des couloirs tectoniques réactivant des grabens néogènes EW Au Tyrrhénien. une phase distensive NE-SW se traduit par des décrochements distensifs conjugués NS sénestres .et EW dextres. Cette tectonique réactive les anciennes failles et provoque un découpage des cuvettes synclinales en parallélogrammes décakilo- métriques influençant le réseau hydrographique. Cette structuration s’observe aussi à petite échelle et au microscope. Mots-clés : Sahel de Tunisie - Bassins quaternaires - Sebkhas - Décrochement -Compression - Distension - Sismique - Dynamique de bassins. A bstract : The quaternary basins of Central Tunisia. Genesis and evolution of the sebkhas related to strike slip faulting. Geological and sismic data from Central Sahel of Tunisia suggest that the coastal lagoons and the sebkhas formation and evolution were controled by two quaternary, respectivelly compressive and extensional, strike slip faulting phases.

During 1955-56 it was noted that the foreign consulates which had previously existed in Tunisia had been raised to embassies or legations. During 1956-57 various countries which had not been represented in Tunisia under the protectorate established embassies or legations. These included Belgium, the German Federal Republic, Portugal, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Libya, and Morocco. Tunisia added embassies in Italy, Spain, Saudi Arabia, and the German Federal Republic to those—in France, the United States, Great Britain, Egypt, Morocco, and Libya—which it had established before July 1956. After the suspension of French economic aid, discussed below, Tunisia sought to develop commercial agreements with other countries. An agreement with Yugoslavia was signed on June 19, 1957, and negotiations with Egypt, the Soviet Union, and Bulgaria were on the verge of producing agreements in the fall of 1957. At its session of July 26, 1956, the United Nations (UN) Security Council unanimously adopted a French motion proposing Tunisia's admission to the UN. This was also unanimously approved by the General Assembly in its session of November 12, 1956. Tunisia further consolidated her independence by establishing an army, securing the partial evacuation of French troops (still garrisoned in certain zones), and Tunisianizing the courts, the civil service, and the radio and television stations. The high geothermal gradient observed in this region and the presence of Triassic “Dome” showed in the seismic cross- sections confirms the existence of an important exploitable geothermal reservoir.
