PROGRAMS OFFERED The program is approved for four years of training in anatomic and clinical pathology through the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine of The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University and the Department of Pathology of Vidant Medical Center. The core curriculum consists of 27 blocks in anatomic pathology and 18 blocks in clinical pathology. The remaining 7 blocks can be used to study a specialized area of pathology or engage in research. Rotations provide experience in surgical, autopsy, and forensic pathology, cytopathology, renal pathology and electron microscopy, neuropathology, dermatopathology, hematopathology, chemical pathology, microbiology, transfusion medicine, cytogenetics, histocompatibility testing, molecular diagnostics, informatics, and laboratory administration and management. The anatomic and clinical pathology residency program at Vidant Medical Center/East Carolina University seeks to equip our residents with the clinical knowledge, technical skills, and managerial and administrative expertise needed to handle the medical and administrative aspects of a pathology laboratory. With the guidance and supervision of the department’s faculty and the staff, residents gradually assume greater responsibility for the daily functions of the pathology service. Through formal education, experience and research, our residents acquire the skills necessary to confidently and competently assume the responsibilities of fellowship and practice at the completion of residency. The residency program is large enough to provide an appropriate volume and spectrum of specimens and cases, but small and flexible enough to tailor training towards the needs and interests of the resident. Highlights of training at VMC/ECU include the first month introductory rotation, excellent anatomic pathology case mix, ample pathology assistant support, generous surgical pathology preview time, and a strong overall clinical pathology experience with high test numbers.Fellowships in cytopathology, forensic pathology, and surgical pathology are also offered.

TYPES AND NUMBERS OF APPOINTMENTS Our ACGME accredited program is approved for a total of 12 residency positions. Residency applicants must be graduates of approved US or Canadian medical schools, or foreign graduates with a valid ECFMG certificate. Applicants are required to have three letters of recommendations (at least one from a pathologist), medical school transcript, Dean's letter, personal statement, and USMLE or COMLEX transcripts. All PGY 1 positions are filled through NRMP and all applications must be submitted through ERAS.

FACILITIES Pathology residency training takes place predominantly at Vidant Medical Center, the teaching hospital of The Brody School of Medicine. This modern, 994-bed facility opened in April 1977 and is the center of tertiary medical care for the eastern portion of North Carolina. The growing medical center has recently opened the Maynard Children's Hospital and the Vidant Cancer Care Center in the Eddie and Jo Allison Smith Tower. The department occupies 40,000 square feet of laboratory space. Pathology personnel have full access to the extensive resources of the Health Sciences Library on the adjoining medical center campus. The Department of Pathology performed the following number of consultations in 2019: 21,715 surgical pathology, 437 bone marrow, 698 flow cytometry, 7,876 cytology (3,785 GYN, 3,762 non-GYN , with 2,200 FNA), 647 autopsies (559 Medical Examiner, 86 hospital, and 2 private) and 248 Medical Examiner external examinations. Clinical laboratories performed over 6.3 million tests in 2019. A full range of modern equipment supports the routine service and research activities of the department, providing comprehensive pathology testing including apheresis, initiatives for blood management, modern automated chemistry line, flow cytometry, image analysis, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization, molecular diagnostics, and electron microscopy. Clinical laboratories are transitioning from conventional to molecular testing.

COMMUNITY The city of Greenville is one of the fastest growing municipalities in North Carolina, yet it retains the historical charm and cultural appeal of this progressive southeastern state. With more than 179,575 residents in the Greenville metropolitan area, it is recognized as a focal point for cultural, industrial, educational and medical activities in eastern North Carolina. Greenville has been recognized as one of the best cities to live in in the U.S. It is also the home of East Carolina University, the third largest university in North Carolina, with a national reputation for its programs in the arts. Among its many advantages, Greenville has a lovely climate, and its geographic location provides access to many leisure activities. Water lovers enjoy fishing, kayaking, boating, skiing, surfing, and scuba diving on the nearby rivers, sounds, and beaches. To the west, the scenic Blue Ridge mountains offer additional recreational opportunities within a half-day's drive.

STIPENDS AND MAINTENANCE The stipend for the first year is $56,007. Hospitalization insurance, medical liability coverage, and group term life insurance are provided. Residents receive three weeks paid vacation annually and twelve days of sick leave. All house officers are issued an East Carolina University activity card entitling them to privileges at university libraries, theaters and sporting events. The state of North Carolina requires that all physicians and house staff trainees be licensed. Those who do not possess a permanent North Carolina medical license must have a North Carolina resident training license.
